How to knit the perfect socks. How to learn how to knit socks from wool yarn correctly

How many unique and necessary things can be knitted with your own hands using the ability to use knitting needles. And not only for yourself, but also for your loved ones. Especially if this item is socks, the most necessary in every person’s wardrobe. You can bring any idea to life using knitting needles and your own hands: warm ones for grandma (to warm her feet), openwork ones for kids. Yes, and you can decorate them in different ways, it all depends on your desire. Socks can be bright, plain or colorful, with. Sock patterns for ornaments can be chosen to suit every taste: there are thematic, floral, geometric.

To find out, for beginners, just read this article and read the description. Have you decided to bring your plans to life? Then we choose instructions, socks. To make knitted socks, two methods are mainly used and an unlimited number of different patterns made with knitting needles.

How to start knitting socks

Have you decided to start knitting socks yourself?

Then let's start learning step by step the process of knitting our sock:

  1. Choose a knitting method.
  2. Having selected the appropriate yarn, decide what kind of socks you will want (striped, with a pattern, or just one color)
  3. Prepare the tools needed for knitting. These are knitting needles, soft meter, scissors and pins.

Use a soft meter to take the necessary measurements for the sock:

  1. Foot length.
  2. Instep girth. We start measuring from the middle of the heel.
  3. After receiving the data. We calculate how many loops we need for knitting. We sum up the data obtained and divide the result in half - we get the length of the canvas for our product.
  4. We determine the density of the future sock for the selected yarn. We knit a sample of a certain length. Now we multiply the number of loops cast on for the sample (minus the edge loops) by the required length of the fabric for our sock and divide by the length of the sample. The total must be a multiple of 4. Not enough loops? Let's add.

Knitting socks on 5 knitting needles is the most popular and easiest way to do. The sock is knitted in stocking stitch. On average, it takes about 200 g of thread to make a pair of socks for adults, and for children you can use half as much.

How to knit socks for beginners, where does the process begin? Work begins with (1x1 or 2x2), sometimes a double elastic band is used. A special feature of knitting a cuff is the individual calculation of the density (so that the cuff fits the leg exactly). Then we move on to knitting the heel of the sock. Having formed the heel, we move on to the final phase - knitting the toe.

Scheme for casting loops on knitting needles

Consider a master class on knitting socks on five knitting needles:

We start knitting on two knitting needles. We use the following: knit and purl. Having cast the required number of loops, remove them evenly onto four knitting needles (as shown in the photo).

The next step is knitting the elastic. We start knitting with the first cast-on stitches. The standard height of the cuff is usually up to 10 cm. If you want to get a turn-up on your toes, then the length of the cuff is doubled.

Have you finished knitting an elastic band? We knit a couple of rows using regular stockinette stitch. And we move on to knitting the heel.

The heel of the sock is first knitted as a rectangular fabric. To do this, transfer the loops from two adjacent knitting needles to one regular (long) one. We do not touch the other two double needles for now. This can be clearly seen in the example photo.

Heel knitting pattern

We knit the fabric for the heel in stocking stitch, not losing sight of the edge loops. If we knit a sock for an adult, then we knit a fabric for the heel 5 cm long. And if a child’s sock, then 3 cm.

Did you get the required length? Distribute the heel stitches onto 3 knitting needles (evenly). Are there any extra loops left? We send them to the middle knitting needle and knit them there.

Next comes the formation of the heel itself. We take the loops from the outer and middle knitting needles to work. But, we knit the last loop on the middle knitting needle in a special way, together with the first from the third knitting needle. We unfold the product and again knit the loops on the middle knitting needle until the penultimate loop. Then the connection of loops is repeated again: the outermost one from the middle knitting needle and the initial one from the first knitting needle. And so we continue until the loops remain only on the middle one.

Now, using a hook, we will pick up loops along the sides of the heel formed by the edge loops, evenly on both sides for our future heel.

The resulting number of loops, as at the beginning of knitting, will be knitted evenly on four knitting needles, using stockinette stitch.

We begin shaping the toe when the knitted part of the sock is equal to the length of the foot to the base of the big toe. Reducing the loops is similar to forming the heel, but in a circle. That is, the last two loops on each of the four knitting needles are knitted together. As a result, there should be four loops left (one on each needle). The final touch is to knit all four remaining stitches together and secure the end of the thread. A pair of knitted socks is knitted using the same principle.

There is another way to knit a sock on five knitting needles with your own hands. The video shows well how to start knitting from the toe, and not from the cuff.

Need socks but don't have needles? It doesn’t matter, you can knit socks on two knitting needles. But how do you knit socks with regular knitting needles, not hosiery knitting needles? The provided master class describes the process of making socks using only two knitting needles.

Before starting work, we will prepare the same tools as for knitting on five needles, adding a gypsy needle to them. The process of preparing for knitting is the same for both five and two knitting needles.

Knitting a sock on two knitting needles is not much different from the knitting above. We start by knitting the cuff (length approximately 4 centimeters). For the cuff we always use an elastic pattern. For our sock, make the length of the elastic approximately 4 centimeters. Then we move to the front stitch and knit another 8 centimeters.

Instructions for knitting socks on 2 knitting needles

Then we move on to shaping the heel:

  1. We divide all the loops of the fabric (without edge loops) into four parts.
  2. The heel will be formed on the basis of the first three parts (we don’t touch the last, fourth part for now). We knit three parts and make a turn of our future sock and make 1 yarn over. Now we will knit the loops only in the middle part (of the three working parts) and again turn the work 180 degrees. Each time we knit this part, we make a yarn over before the last loop until there are 10 loops in this part.
  3. We continue to form the heel. Now let's start adding loops. Take the first loop from the side, yarn over and the last loop in the middle and knit them together. (Don’t forget to add yarn overs at the beginning of each row). Now we continue knitting until we knit all the remaining loops.
  4. Further work consists of knitting the entire fabric in stocking stitch to the base of the thumb.
  5. We form a toe. We will divide the entire number of available loops into four parts. In every second row we decrease stitches by knitting together the last two stitches in each quarter of the fabric (in 4 rows). We make subsequent decreases in each subsequent row.
  6. When finishing knitting, we knit together the remaining four loops on the knitting needles and fix the end of the thread.
  7. After this, we fold the resulting product with the wrong side up and connect it with thread. We received the first sock of the pair. We knit a pair for him in the same way.

Knitting socks for children

But how to knit socks for children can be understood from the presented video and step-by-step instructions. You just need to keep the proportions. And if you periodically try on while knitting a sock, then problems may not arise at all.

Knitting has long been an integral pastime for every housewife, and if she knew how to knit socks, this became a separate plus for both herself and her household. “But socks are knitted on five needles, which constantly get in the way and fall out, and this is so inconvenient and painstaking!” - you say. That is why the technique of knitting on two needles has spread today. We’ll talk about it now, and also show you two ways to knit comfortable socks quickly, and without seams.

Preparation

Any experienced knitter will tell you that the quality of the finished product directly depends on the correct selection of tools and materials involved in the work, that is, in our case, knitting needles and threads. Including their thickness, length and what they are made of.

Spokes

The first thing you need to choose is the knitting needles. Knitting should be fun, and comfort plays an important role in this case. Be guided by the main criteria when choosing to buy the model that is right for you.

Different types of knitting needles for knitting socks

Wooden knitting needles are light and quite strong, but can leave puffs on the products. Plastic knitting needles are light, smooth and comfortable, but they are very fragile and often break. Aluminum products are strong and smooth, but they can leave dark marks on light-colored yarns. Steel is perhaps the most reliable material, although many may find such knitting needles heavy.

The size of the knitting needles should be selected depending on the pattern of the future product and the thickness of the yarn. It will be more convenient if you buy a complete set of knitting needles of all sizes so that you can use the right ones if necessary. In the store, experienced salespeople will tell you about the correct selection of knitting needle diameters for a specific yarn and knitting density.

Do not forget that the wrong size of knitting needles will lead to a sloppy appearance of the product. In the future, this will affect the quality of the socks, their durability and comfort.

Pay attention to the edges of the knitting needles. The working ends should not be blunt, but too sharp ones are not recommended either.. With such knitting needles you can damage the sock during knitting and split the thread, which will make it look sloppy. Even worse, sharp knitting needles can injure your hands (even experienced knitters are not immune to this).

The non-working (back) ends of the knitting needles can be the same pointed or closed, with rings, caps or wire. The first option is double-sided, suitable only for knitting small items. The second type of knitting needle is designed for working with large complex things.

For beginner knitters, it is better to purchase knitting needles made of aluminum or steel of medium size, No. 3 (this is the thickness in millimeters, it is indicated on the non-working edge of the knitting needle or cap) and 15–20 cm long. The non-working edge must be closed. This will make it convenient for you to knit socks on two knitting needles for both adults and children; the loops will not slip off while working. Tools that are too long will make the job heavier and their non-working ends will catch on everything they can reach.

Yarn

The modern textile industry provides us with such a huge selection of yarn and threads for knitting that our eyes widen, and it can be very difficult to choose the right option. It can be wool, synthetics, cotton and a host of other mixed types of threads.

Carefully select yarn for future socks

Wool-based threads are considered the most suitable for knitting socks. In the finished product, they hold their shape well, do not stretch, and the designs and patterns look distinct and voluminous.

When you choose yarn for yourself, carefully read the instructions on the label. All the necessary information is indicated there: these threads are intended for hand or machine knitting, and how to properly care for the knitted product. Do not throw away the label until you finish knitting: the information on the color and thread number indicated on it will be useful if there is not enough yarn and you have to buy more.

We recommend that beginning needlewomen choose wool or wool blend yarn for knitting socks. Even the size of the finished product can depend on the thickness of the thread! For regular socks, choose standard threads of medium thickness, and for warm socks that will be worn in cold weather, it is better to take thick yarn. Knitting needles No. 3 are great for knitting socks from wool and wool blend yarn of any thickness.

Determining the size

You shouldn’t mindlessly pick up your knitting needles and start knitting. Knitting, like any other business, has features and preparatory stages that should be taken into account before starting work. First, you need to determine the size of the product. To ensure that socks fit perfectly on your feet, you must take into account the height of the instep, foot size, and lower calf circumference. It’s not often that we have the opportunity during the knitting process to attach a product to a model for fitting. Therefore, knitters often use a single formula based on shoe size:

where X is the shoe size, and Y is the foot size in centimeters.

Before you start knitting, take a foot measurement to calculate the size of the product.

  1. Carefully count the loops in the product. This is especially true for knitting complex patterns, but it is also important in simple fabrics.
  2. Remember that when knitting a sock you need to form 4 parts: the sole, heel, shaft and top of the product.
  3. When decorating a product, you can use threads of different colors and shades, but only of one type, quality and thickness.
  4. The density of the sock knitting should be uniform throughout the entire work.
  5. Do not forget that some types of yarn lose quality when treated with heat and moisture (for example, they shrink when washed). This is especially true for wool and wool mixtures. To avoid such troubles, add small increments while knitting. It is enough to knit 1-2 more loops on each side of the work than indicated in the report. But if you are planning a neat, gentle wash for your socks, then stick to the exact number of loops.

We start from the toe

First we will look at a simple version of knitting from the toe towards the top of the product without a seam.

These socks without a seam can be knitted on two knitting needles

Take the main yarn and an additional thread (at least 35 cm long, it is better to use a sliding thread). Secure by tying in a knot.

Tie the main and additional threads in a knot

Now calculate the number of loops. The calculation will be based on the leg circumference. Measure it with a centimeter and divide it: by 3 - if you have thick yarn, by 4 - if the threads are of medium thickness. That is, in 1 centimeter of tightly knitted fabric with the initial loops not very closely shifted, there should be 3 or 4 loops, respectively. This applies to knitting with needles No. 3. If you use thicker knitting needles, the number of stitches per centimeter will be no more than three.

Do not try to tighten the initial stitches too tightly: it will be awkward for you to remove the knitting needle and knit the next row. The extra thread will perfectly hold the shape of the loops.

Let's say there are 48 initial loops. You need to cast on half the calculated loops, that is, 24.

Begin casting on stitches using extra thread

In this case, the loops are formed by the main thread, and the additional thread secures them at the bottom of the knitting.

Secure the loops with additional thread

Thus, cast on 24 loops on two folded knitting needles.

Cast on 24 loops

Taking out one knitting needle, knit the first row with knit stitches, and the second row with purl stitches, without knitting the last loop.

Take out one knitting needle and knit the front row

Turn the work over and continue knitting. The last stitches in each row are not knitted.

Continue without knitting the last stitches in the rows

Thus, you need to knit one less loop in each row until a third of the initial number of loops remains, that is, in our case, 8 pieces.

The number of loops will be reduced to a third

At this stage, the number of working loops begins to increase: knit the previously removed loops in each row in turn.

Now knit the remaining stitches

To avoid too large holes due to elongated loops, use this method: pick up a side loop on the left knitting needle, knit it together with the next one on the left knitting needle. In the front row, these loops are knitted with knit stitches, in the purl row - with purl stitches.

Carefully knit the loops so as not to leave large distances between them

Knit the toe of the sock in this manner until all the stitches return to work.

Knitting toe

Now take to work the loops that were initially secured with additional thread (hereinafter referred to as DN). Pick up the first stitch from the DN onto the knitting needle. Transfer one stitch from the left needle to the right.

Transferring loops

Raise the loop from the DN again.

Continuing the transfer

And transfer the loop to the right needle from the left.

Transfer stitches from one needle to another

Continue in this manner until you have picked up and transferred all the stitches to the right needle. After this, carefully remove the additional thread.

After transferring stitches, remove additional thread

The further knitting process looks like this: knit 1 (a loop that was picked up with an additional thread), then 1 loop is removed, the thread is brought out in front of the loop (loop from the left knitting needle), knit 1 again, 1 removed, and so on in order. The last stitch is knitted. Slip the first stitch of the next row, knit 1, purl 1, repeat to the end of the row.

Further knitting process

Accordingly, in one row you will knit half the loops, in the other - the second half. The result will be a product in the form of a “pipe”. When its length becomes equal to the length of the foot, start knitting the heel.

Knitting the foot

Remove the loops one at a time onto an additional knitting needle. On the remaining stitches, knit the heel in the same way as you knitted the toe of the sock. So first you will decrease the number of working stitches by 1 on each row until a third of the starting number remains.

Knitting the heel of the sock

And then you will add a loop in each row until the previous amount returns.

Complete the heel knitting

Transfer all the stitches to one needle, knitting 1 knit stitch on the front needle one at a time and slipping 1 stitch on the back needle before knitting.

Transfer all stitches to one needle

Knit the sock to the top

Tie an elastic band according to the following pattern: 1 slipped loop, * k1. p., 1 p. remove, leave the thread before work, 1 p. p., 1 p. remove, leave the thread before work*. Repeat the report from * to *. Having knitted an elastic band of the desired height, close the loops.

Tie the elastic band and close the loops

That's it. The result of some simple work is this wonderful sock.

Finished sock

After repeating the whole process, tie him a pair.

Let's start with an elastic band

These cute two-color socks are no more difficult to knit than the previous ones, with the only difference being that the direction of work goes from top to bottom, from the elastic to the toe. Take yarn of two colors of the same thickness and knitting needles No. 3. In this example, the foot length of the sock is 11–12 centimeters.

For these socks, take threads of two colors

Knitting starts from the back of the cuff. Place two knitting needles together, cast on 22 stitches and knit 15 rows one to one with an elastic band (depending on the density, it will be about 4 cm).

Knit 4 cm with an elastic band 1 X 1

After this, knit another 4 cm in stockinette stitch. If desired, you can change the color of the product. The back of the sock is already ready.

Knit another 4 cm in stockinette stitch.

Now start knitting the heel. To form it, make decreases on the front row: knit the second, third and 2 penultimate stitches together. Continue in this manner until there are 12 stitches left on the needles. After this, you need to expand the work so that the size of the canvas increases. Knit one additional knit stitch from the edge stitch. No additions are made on the purl rows. Add stitches until the count is again 22. The heel is formed.

Shape the heel of the sock

Knit a foot 8 cm long in stockinette stitch.. Alternate yarn colors: 2 rows for each color. The sole of the sock and its back are ready.

When knitting the foot of a sock, alternate colors

Knit the toe in the same way as the heel: reduce the number of stitches to 12, then increase to 24.

Knit 8 centimeters of the top of the sock, while connecting the first and last loops with the edge loops in each front row. This way you will connect the sole to the upper and almost finish knitting the sock.

Connect the sole and the top of the sock

Knit the cuff at the front using stockinette stitch, while connecting it to the back. It remains to tie 4 centimeters of elastic - and the work is completed.

Enjoy warm cozy socks!

How to knit for children

For knitting children's socks, it is better to take multi-colored yarn. Bright colorful products not only please the eye, but also become an interesting, funny thing for the baby. The main thing is that the thread is natural, soft, and retains heat well. In addition, children's socks should be decorated with decorative elements in the form of knitted flowers, animals, butterflies, bugs and everything that your imagination tells you.

Children's socks should be bright, soft and fancy

The method of knitting children's seamless socks on two knitting needles can be anything: from a toe or from an elastic band - it doesn’t matter. But it is very important to correctly calculate the number of loops depending on the size of the leg. To do this, use the formula we gave above and take into account the thickness of the thread used.

To avoid mistakes, first try knitting a small piece of fabric using garter stitch or stockinette stitch. 10 rows of 10 stitches will be enough to understand what knitting density is needed for your child’s leg.

Variation: socks-slippers without seam

Each of us wants our feet to be warm and comfortable. Is it raining, slush or snowing outside? Imagine that warm and soft slippers knitted by your own hands are waiting for you at home!

Cozy and light knitted slippers will surely please your feet!

For such slippers, you can use a simple pattern.

  1. Cast on 43 stitches on the needles. 20 of them are one side, 3 are in front and 20 are the other side. Next, knit two rows: knit the first row, purl the second.
  2. We knit the third row like this: knit 20 loops, yarn over, knit one, yarn over, purl one (this is the middle of the product or the central loop, everything goes symmetrically from it), yarn over, knit one, yarn over, knit 20. We knit the fourth row and all even rows purlwise, except for the central one: we knit it with the front one.
  3. Fifth row: knit 20, yo, knit 3, yo, purl one, yo, knit 3, yo, knit 20.
  4. Seventh row: knit 20, yo, knit 5, yo, purl one, yo, knit 5, yo, knit 20.
  5. So we knit up to 23 rows. We knit it like this: knit 20, yarn over, knit 21, yarn over, purl one, yarn over, knit 21, yarn over, knit 20.
  6. Now you need to knit the sole of the slipper. To do this, when knitting the 23rd row, insert a strong thread into it, since the sole should be more rigid and durable. Remember how the heel of the toe is knitted, and use the same method to make the front part of the slipper.
  7. The sole is made of 13 loops: 6 on the right, one in the center, 6 on the left. From six on the right and on the left, grab one loop each and do this along the entire length of the sole.
  8. Knit the 25th row: knit 36, 37th and 38th loops together, knit 11, 50th and 51st loops together, slip this loop back onto the left knitting needle. Turn the knitting over.
  9. 26th row: one loop is already on the knitting needle, purl 11, purl the 13th and 14th, and transfer the resulting loop back to the left knitting needle. Turn over and knit rows until you run out of tack stitches. As you knit, it is better to reduce the number of stitches from 13 to 7–9, because the heel is narrower than the sole itself. Then we knit these 7–9 loops, picking up the loops. This will close the heel.

This pattern is usually used for knitting slippers in sizes 38–39.

Video: knitting seamless socks on two knitting needles

Knit socks and slippers, wear them comfortably and keep your feet warm! There is no need to be upset if it doesn’t work out right away. In this case, you can always ask for advice in the comments. The main thing is patience and hard work, because even the best craftswomen did not succeed the first time. And you won’t notice how your work will be crowned with success, positivity and just good rest and mood at your leisure!

If you don’t yet know how to knit the heel of a sock, then spiral knitting using a simple elastic band is a great way for you to get a warm, dimensionless product made from wool yarn. Master the alternation of knit and purl stitches: 2 knit and 2 purl (2x2); 5 knit and 5 purl (5x5).

After making a 2x2 elastic pattern, decide on the required shin coverage and the number of starting loops. Divide them into 4 equal parts. Cast on the required number of thread arches, place them on four double needles and work a 2x2 rib 3-4 cm high in the round. Now you will continue knitting the socks in a spiral.

Make 4 circles, but with 5x5 alternations. Having finished knitting on the fourth double needle, attach a piece of colored thread at the end of the row to mark an important point of work. At this point you will begin to offset the stitches for the spiral pattern. Work the next circle of rib, but move the pattern 1 stitch to the left.

Work 4 rounds and move the thread marker to the beginning of the current round. Move the elastic pattern to the left again by 1 thread. Knit further, looking at the finished sample. You should end up with a pipe-like fabric that will twist in a spiral shape.

Having knitted the product of the required size, make a toe:

On knitting needles Nos. 1 and 3, knit 2 stitches together;

On knitting needles No. 2 and 4, remove the second loop without knitting;

Knit the next one and pull the removed one through;

Work according to the pattern until the number of stitches in knitting is reduced to 8;

Pull the working thread through the remaining arms, pull the toe and cut the yarn;

- tuck the “tail” into the finished spiral sock.

Make a paired product according to the sample.

Please note: you will get a simple, spiral-shaped one, like the whole sock. This product is especially recommended for children: the length of the sole is dimensionless; it only becomes small as the circumference of the shin increases.

Socks on 2 knitting needles: a simple knitting method

The second way to knit socks on knitting needles will quickly and easily help you cope with the task, but in this case you will end up with a sewn product. Start your work with a 2x2 elastic band sample and use it to find out the girth of the shin and the desired length of the cast-on edge. Cast on the loops on 2 knitting needles connected with fishing line and make a fabric 4-6 cm high in straight and reverse rows.

Continue knitting the sock on 2 needles with knit stitches for approximately 22 rows (to the beginning of the heel). Select half of the work on the fishing line and knit it 12 rows in height. In the same knitted part of the fabric, mark a dozen central loops and begin to decrease the thread bows along the edges:

Knit 8 loops;

Knit 9 and 10 stitches together;

Work next 8 stitches;

Knit 2 loops together;

Knit the remaining loops.

Decrease the heel fabric in each row, reducing the number of side loops of the piece, until 8 thread arches remain. Place the edges of the resulting part of the product on the knitting needles and continue knitting the sock on 2 knitting needles until you complete the work to the toe. To form it, divide the knitting into 4 segments and knit a pair of adjacent loops together in each until there are 4 left on the knitting needles. Pull the toe and tighten its tip with a working thread. Make a joining seam. Make a paired product according to the sample.

Useful advice: you can knit socks with a simple pattern using alternating strips of different yarns. To enhance the wear resistance of the heel, the part can be made with two layers of thread.

Perhaps the simplest product that you can knit yourself is socks with knitting needles: diagrams and descriptions are simple and beautiful already on our page, create and be inspired!

Knitted socks in winter are a very important wardrobe item, simply irreplaceable. Warm, soft, cozy, you can knit these socks with your own hands; you just need to put in a little effort and buy good quality yarn. Warm socks are knitted from wool mixture to make them durable and soft, and synthetic thread is often added to the yarn to strengthen it. We previously wrote about what yarn to choose and. There we also talked about leg measurements and also demonstrated video with a detailed description of the knitting process. But step-by-step instructions for knitting socks on two knitting needles await you right now.

In order to knit socks, you need correctly calculate the size of the future product. The easiest way is to use the following formula: 42:3X2, where 42 is your shoe size. Thus, the foot size will be 28. If you are going to knit socks for children, use this formula or simply measure the child's foot.

Let's start the process of knitting socks on two knitting needles

You will need medium size knitting needles and two colors of yarn.

Cast on 22 loops(we are knitting children's socks) and then knit a 4 cm 1X1 rib pattern (you will get approximately 14-15 rows).

The next 4 cm are a stockinette stitch pattern. Thus, the back of the sock is ready.

Now we will tell you how to knit the heel of a sock on knitting needles. To do this, you need to gradually decrease by knitting the second and third, as well as the 2 penultimate loops together. Decrease loops necessary until we get 12 loops on the knitting needles. At the next stage we will expand the work to enlarge the canvas. We knit one knit stitch from the edge loop at a time, leaving the purl loops without adding. We add knit stitches until 22 loops are formed on the needles again. The heel formation is complete.

Next, knitting socks moves on to the next stage - knitting the foot. To do this, you need to knit an 8 cm pattern in stockinette stitch, alternating colors (2 rows in yellow, 2 rows in green).

By analogy with knitting the heel, we knit the toe. First we reduce the loops to the number of 12, and then we increase to 22.

For the top of the sock we knit 8 cm, while connecting the first and last loops with the edge loops in each front row. Thus, we connect the sole and the top of the sock, giving the product a complete look.

From the front side we knit the cuffs using stockinette stitch, connecting the front and back parts of the sock. To complete the work, knit 4 cm with an elastic band. Using a similar pattern, we knit the second sock.

So we knitted the socks on two knitting needles. If you want to knit openwork socks, we present you a couple of beautiful and fairly simple schemes.

How to knit the heel of a sock on knitting needles: step-by-step master class

We have already talked about the formation of the heel above, but I would like to spend more time on the process of knitting this important element.

One of the most popular ways to knit a heel is the boomerang.. To learn how to properly use this knitting technique, read the instructions in the photo.

There are various options for knitting heels. Perhaps from such a rich list you can choose a method that suits your liking.

How to knit a straight heel: step-by-step instructions

This type of heel knitting is one of the simplest. The master class will tell you about all the main nuances.

  1. To work you will need 5 double needles, 4 of which form a square, and the fifth will act as a working one.
  2. After knitting the cuff, move on to the heel.
  3. For knitting the heel wall in stockinette stitch you should use needles No. 4 and No. 1. The number of rows should be 2 less than the number of stitches cast on.
  4. We knit the lower part of the heel like this: divide the total number of loops by 3, if the number is not divisible by three, there will be a larger number of loops on the middle part, and the same number of loops on the sides (for example, 11+12+11).
  5. We knit the middle part with satin stitch, the front side with knit stitches, and the back side with purl stitches.
  6. On the sides we gradually decrease the loops, knitting the outer loops together.
  7. We knit the lower part as follows: knit the first row, then in the middle part we knit the last loop together with the front one, which is crossed.
  8. We unfold the work and knit the second purl row, removing the outer loop as a purl stitch. We purl the middle, and also purl the outermost one from the next row.
  9. Turn the work around and we knit the 3rd row by analogy to the first.
  10. We knit according to the above pattern until the middle part of the knitting remains.

How to knit socks on 5 knitting needles for beginners

We will tell you how to knit socks on 5 knitting needles for beginners. With this knitting technique, the products are obtained without seams. We knit the socks in a spiral so that they fit perfectly to the leg. The process starts from the top of the sock towards the toe, knitting must be done in the round. The loops are cast on four of the prepared knitting needles, with the fifth being the working one.

To calculate the number of loops required, you need to take into account the leg circumference. You will need two such circles:

  • in the instep area, measured from the heel to the instep;
  • legs near the foot, measured above the bone; this is where the leg is thinnest.

Both of these dimensions must be added and the resulting value divided by two, obtaining the average circumference. If the circumference in the instep is 31 centimeters, and in the thin part of the leg - 21 cm, then their sum is 52 cm, and half of it is 26 cm. The set of loops is calculated from this size. The number of stitches obtained by calculation must be rounded to a multiple of four so that there are no problems with working on four knitting needles.

Having collected the required number of loops, divide them equally between four knitting needles and begin to form an elastic band using the circular knitting method. Its size is usually 5-6 cm, but you can reduce it if you wish. Next, using the knitting method, 7-8 centimeters are knitted to the beginning of the heel.

It is necessary to knit the heel of the sock on knitting needles from half the number of stitches, the rest remain on those knitting needles that are not currently used. On two of the knitting needles, a 5.5 - 6-centimeter fabric is knitted, representing the height of the heel. Its size is related to the rise of a particular leg; it can be made smaller, but after size 35 it is a constant size.

Now you need to provide the heel with the necessary shape, make it descend, dividing the loops into three equal parts. If the number of loops is not divisible by three, that is, there are excess loops left, they must be connected to the central heel part. The loops located in the center can be continued to be knitted further, and the loops forming the sides of the heel are connected to the loops located in the center.

The descent of the loops should begin from the wrong side and end from the front side. Two thirds of all loops are knitted purlwise, after which two loops are knitted together with a purl type loop - the last of the central ones and the initial one from the third part. Then the knitting unfolds and continues on the front heel side. During the turn, the initial loop is removed without knitting.

Knitting continues with knit stitches, and the last loop from among the central ones with the initial loop from the first part is knitted together using the broaching method (the first of the loops is removed, the second is knitted as a knit stitch, after which the removed loop is transferred to the previously knitted one). Next, the knitting is turned again, the initial loop is removed without knitting it, and everything is repeated.

Knitting must be continued until the side loops are closed. Next, the loops are cast on the side heel part, in each even row one of the loops is cast on, and in addition another loop is made, therefore, three loops are cast on for two rows. Next comes the transition to the circular knitting method.

The loops left on the knitting needles are put to work, the loops are again cast on from the sides of the heel and from its central part. The initial row is knitted with knit stitches, then in each even circular row, starting from the tip of the first knitting needle, the 3rd and 2nd loops are knitted with a knit stitch, and on the 4th knitting needle the 2nd and 3rd stitches are knitted knitted together using the broach method. This way the heel fits better to the leg.

The decreases are repeated until the number of loops is equal to the initial one, which was cast on at the very beginning of the work. The foot is knitted around the circumference in knit stitch up to the beginning of the big toe or to the tip of the little toe. Next the toe is knitted. The loops are decreased as follows: in an even row, the 3rd and 2nd loops from the tips of the first and third knitting needles are knitted together using the knit stitch type, and on the 2nd and 4th knitting needles, the second and third loops can be knitted together using the broaching method. When only half of all stitches remain, these removals begin in all rows until the last four stitches remain. All that remains is to pull them together with thread and tie them. Now you have an idea of how to knit socks.
