Skillfully applied makeup will be appropriate during the daytime. But it looks best in the evening light, so it would be ideal for going to a club or restaurant. How to do smoky eye makeup so that it looks beautiful and emphasizes the expressiveness of your eyes? We will tell you about this and other tricks now.

Features of applying smoky makeup for different eye colors

Before you start doing this type of makeup at home, let's look at which color scheme is best suited for a particular eye color. For smoky makeup, it is typical to use shadows of the same color palette. But in order for them to give the eyes the necessary expressiveness, you should know for which eye color which shades suit best.

Brown eyes

The ideal colors for emphasizing the depth of the look are dark gray and brown shades. You can combine it with beige, cream or coffee. More festive makeup can be done using golden shadows - light shades are applied on the inner corner of the eye, and dark ones on the outer corner. It is better to use white shadows under the eyebrows.

The darker the eye color, the larger the shadow palette is suitable for the girl. Owners of dark brown eyes can use almost all shades of eyeshadow.

Blue and gray eyes

For this color, use gray and silver shades. Apply lilac or purple shadows under the eyebrows. Give preference to cool shades - bronze, brown. But it is better to avoid blue and dark blue colors, as they weigh down the look and make it look unnatural.

Green eyes

A blue and green palette is not recommended for those with green eyes.

It is best to use gray and brown shadows. The entire gray range from white to black is ideal for light green eyes for fair-haired and black-haired girls. For owners of red hair and brown-haired women, you can use brown shades, sand and terracotta color of shadows or pencil.

Basic rules for applying smoky makeup

Now let’s look at applying smoky makeup step by step.

For this we need only 5 things:

  1. Warp. It can be any light shadow.
  2. Black pencil.
  3. The shades of your chosen range are 2-3 shades.
  4. Mascara.
  5. A brush for applying and blending eye shadow and a pencil.

And so let's begin.

Step #1

Apply a light-colored foundation to the entire upper eyelid. This way your makeup will be longer lasting and brighter.

Step #2

Use a black pencil to outline the eye along the line above the eyelashes. Then, using a brush or applicator, blend the line well so that it has a smoother transition.

Step #3

Let's use shadows. If you choose 2 shadow options, then apply the light color to the inner corner of the upper eyelid, and dark shadows to the outer corner. Then blend out any harsh transitions. Pay special attention to the middle of the eyelid, where the two colors mix. Transitions should be smooth, as shown in the photo below.

When using three shades of eyeshadow, also apply the lightest and darkest to the corners of the eyelid, and paint the middle of the eyelid with a medium-bright color. And blend everything with a brush.

Step #4

To enhance the effect on the lower eyelid along the lash line, apply a black pencil and lightly blend. Then apply dark shadows from one corner to the other. But near the inner corner the line should be thin, and as it approaches the outer edge it should thicken by approximately 1.5-2 mm. All transitions must also be smooth.

Step #5

Applying mascara is an equally important moment in smoky makeup. It needs to be applied several times to get the effect of very long eyelashes. To prevent eyelashes from sticking together, comb them after each layer with a special brush.

Step #6

Now all that remains is to give the correct shape to your eyebrows using an eyebrow pencil or dark shadows and a brush. Comb your eyebrows and the look is ready.

Just don't forget the lipstick. Since the eyes are painted very expressively, the shade of the lips should not be too bright. It is better to take lipstick of a natural color.

As you can see, it’s very easy to do smoky makeup yourself, and it looks impressive. Moreover, this style suits absolutely everyone, so you can safely do this makeup for yourself. You can watch the video below for more detailed instructions on how to apply smokey eye.

Makeup, done correctly, always emphasizes the beauty of a woman’s face and hides minor flaws. An expressive look can be achieved using a technique such as “smoky eye”.

Smoky makeup is so popular among makeup artists that they recommend using it for both an evening look and a daytime look. You just need to master the precise technique of applying shadows and choose the right color palette.

Uniqueness of makeup

Nowadays, beautifully executed makeup can be found not only on professional catwalks, but also among everyday women's looks. “Smoky Ice” is not only a unique technique, but also quite universal:

  1. In addition to the usual dark tones, makeup artists offer to create a “haze” using light and even pastel shades;
  2. By properly mixing and shading colors, you can highlight your eyes, disguise imperfections, or visually change the shape of your eyelid;
  3. When doing smokey eye makeup, use up to 5 shades that combine well with each other.

You should also know that the main rule when using this technique is the visual effect of an imperceptible flow of colors from light to dark tones. This can only be achieved with careful layer-by-layer shading of the shadows using special brushes.

Features of smokey eye makeup for green eyes

The classic version of the “smoky” is often created in black or gray colors. However, many different shades of smoky makeup suit green-eyed beauties. In order for your eyes to look expressive, you should know the basic rules for performing makeup using this technique:

In addition, with the help of good shading and color palette you can adjust the shape of the eyes:

  • in order to “soften” the line, girls with round eyes should extend the color beyond the outer corner, parallel to the tip of the eyebrow;
  • for small eyes, on the contrary, it is necessary to raise the dark tip slightly above the natural line of the upper eyelid.

In order to emphasize the natural expressiveness of green eyes, you should rely not only on your own preferences, but also be aware of the existence of a certain color scheme.

Selection of color palette

The skill of applying makeup for green eyes must necessarily be based on the compatibility of shadows with hair and skin color, and must also be appropriate at a certain time of day. These rules should be paid attention to when working with the color palette:

  1. Daytime makeup can be based on beige, brown, bronze shades, which visually “highlight” the color of the iris;
  2. Classic gray and black combinations are suitable for both blondes and brunettes;
  3. Fuchsia shades, lilac and plum variations highlight eye color very favorably, but this type of makeup is best done for evening outings;
  4. An unusual combination can be considered green eyes and wine shades, popular this year. However, girls with a pinkish skin tone should avoid this combination so as not to get the “sore eyes” effect. This evening option is suitable for pale-skinned girls and those with a grayish complexion;
  5. Dark-skinned girls should choose rich colors; pastel colors will look out of place;
  6. Fair-skinned girls, on the contrary, should not apply paint too thickly, so as not to get a “mask” effect.

A classic combination for green eyes is a palette consisting of emerald colors and deep blue.

Makeup techniques

To achieve long-lasting and beautiful makeup, you should arm yourself in advance with the necessary cosmetics and tools. In addition to the shadow palette, it is necessary to use products that even out skin tone. Let's take a closer look at how to do smokey eye makeup for green eyes.

So, proper smokey eye makeup includes several steps:

Properly done makeup will allow you to focus on the beauty of green eyes. When completing the look, you should remember that with brightly defined eyes, you should mute the shade of lipstick. Daytime “smoky” in pastel colors allows you to add color to the lips.

“Smoky Eyes” step by step for gray-green eyes

Girls, whom nature has awarded with gray-green eyes, often have a light skin tone and light brown hair. When making makeup, you should focus on a cooler color palette.

Gray, emerald colors, cold pink, a combination of white and deep blue tones will look beautiful.

Let's look at the instructions for creating makeup in silver-gray tones:

  1. Apply a makeup base to your eyelids, then apply foundation and set with loose powder;
  2. Apply a pencil to the prepared eyelid along the hairline along the upper and lower eyelids. The color is selected depending on the desired saturation: gray, the color of wet asphalt or black. The line is shaded with a brush;
  3. We select the lightest shadows from the palette: white, light with a gray or blue tint. With this tone we completely cover the entire moving eyelid from the hairline to the brow arch;
  4. Apply the next color – the darkest – to the lower eyelid, blending thoroughly. Then you should darken the area from the middle of the fixed part of the eyelid, smoothly descending onto the moving eyelid and starting a line just above the hair growth;
  5. On the moving part of the eyelid we apply a medium tone - gray, silver or blue. Then, with a flat brush, we work over the entire eyelid, delicately mixing colors;
  6. At the last stage, apply mascara liberally or fix false eyelashes.

As a highlight, if desired, you can add a little plum color to this makeup along the line framing the moving eyelid.

“Smoky Ice” for brown-green eyes

Brown-green eyes belong to the “warm” color scheme. For girls with this eye color, both the classic gray-black version and “muted” shades of brown, gold, burgundy, pinkish and khaki are suitable. So, let’s look at the implementation of “smoky ice” in golden brown tones step by step:

  1. Prepare the eyelid for the use of shadows using a base, correctors, foundation and light powder;
  2. Beige shades are applied to the drooping eyelid, right up to the area under the eyebrow, carefully blending, creating a transparent effect;
  3. Apply a black pencil line along the eyelash growth line and blend with a brush;
  4. Next, choose the darkest shade in the eyeshadow palette, usually black or dark brown. Using a brush, we work on the lower eyelid, slightly short of the inner corner of the eye, and also form an “arrow” on the upper eyelid, slightly moving it beyond the contours of the eye. The lines should not be graphic, so the color is distributed with the brush in a circular motion, creating a light layer that transitions into the next color;
  5. Then we apply the middle shade from the eyeshadow palette, usually golden beige, bronze, coffee, terracotta. Apply color to the brush and cover the entire upper part of the eyelid, moving the tone towards the tip of the eyebrow. Then all applied colors are mixed with one brush, creating a smooth overflow;
  6. In the outer corner of the eye it is necessary to apply light golden bronze or white kajal to “open up” the look;
  7. The final stage involves applying mascara.

This option is quite versatile, because it is suitable for both daytime outings and evening events. Instead of bronze and golden shadows, you can use burgundy, brown or reddish-brown.

Daytime option for green eyes

For daytime smokey eye makeup for green eyes, makeup artists advise using calmer colors, excluding too dark shades. You can avoid using a pencil at all or choose light shades of brown or gray.

In addition, the color palette for an everyday look can be used not from 5, but from 2-3 colors. So, let's look at two options for “smoky eyes” for green eyes for daylight hours:

  • Makeup in pastel colors.

For this makeup, matte muted shades are used. Using a brush, apply a light tone to the prepared skin - peach, light beige, sand. Then highlight the eyelids with a brown or bronze pencil and shade.

In this version, you can not use a pencil, but instead apply brown matte shadows along the contour of the eye, moving the line upward, parallel to the tip of the eyebrow. You can apply a little bronze pigment to the moving eyelid to accentuate the green of the iris. You should finish your makeup by painting your eyelashes with mascara;

  • Makeup with pearlescent pigments.

This type of color work is based on pearlescent shadows. Pink contrasting colors or shades of green and marsh are often used. It is recommended to leave darker colors for evening makeup. The main color, covering both the movable and fixed eyelids, in this version is white.

The pencil line should be light, do not use a lot of black. The base tone is applied to the drooping eyelid with a flat brush, in this version it is pink or marsh. Next, apply a light grayish tint to the border between the fixed and moving eyelids, gradually moving towards the inner corner of the eye. The result should be secured with mascara.

For a strict office style, the option using matte pastel colors would be more preferable. For daytime cultural events, makeup with pearlescent pigments would be quite appropriate.

Evening smokey eye for green eyes

For an evening look, classic gray and black makeup is most often used, which goes with both dresses and suits. Also very popular is the option with emerald shadows, emphasizing the “green” look. Let's look at step-by-step instructions for two types of evening makeup.

  • Makeup with emerald pigment.

A light tone is applied to the powdered eyelid, covering both the movable and fixed parts, right down to the brow ridge. Next, we use a black soft pencil; for evening makeup, the lines along the upper and lower eyelids can be made more saturated and be sure to be shaded.

Black pigment is applied to the outer corner of the eye, then to the middle of the fixed eyelid, outlining the moving part. You can lengthen your eye using pearl green eyeliner. For this makeup, you can use false eyelashes. Such an image will be quite theatrical;

  • “Smoky Ice” in lilac or plum tones.

The main color for this makeup will be white or silver; they should cover the entire eyelid. Then highlight the upper and lower eyelids with black and shade them. A plum or lilac tone is applied directly to the moving part.

You can apply dark shadows to the lower and upper eyelids, forming a tail at the outer corner of the eye. From the inner corner of the eye to the middle of the fixed part of the eyelid, you can additionally apply a silver tone to emphasize the contrast of the makeup. With such a rich base color, you can also focus on the eyelashes using false eyelashes.

For evening makeup, violet, dark burgundy shades, rich gold pigment, and deep blue are also suitable as the main color.

The most important and basic advice from makeup artists when creating a “smoky” look is to carefully work out all the colors and create a smoky flow from one shade to another. In addition, you should follow certain tricks to create the perfect look:

Modern fashion dictates not to be limited by the compatibility of colors from one range, offering to combine contrasting shades in one make-up: yellow and purple, blue, green and burgundy. But such makeup is not always appropriate in everyday life.

Conclusion

Concluding the story about how to do smoky eye makeup for green eyes, we should once again note the basic rules for using the color palette:

  1. Before applying shadows, you should prepare the skin of your eyelids well so that the shadows lie evenly and the makeup itself lasts a long time without crumbling;
  2. You should select a palette of shadows to match the color of your eyes, hair and skin tone;
  3. Make-up appropriate for evening and daytime events.

What is “smoky” makeup?

“Smoky” makeup owes its appearance to silent black-and-white cinema, and Brigitte Bardot’s cult status. She began to be copied by millions of women all over the world who dreamed of the same mysterious and fatal look. Smokey eyes are firmly at the top of the ranking of popular makeup techniques and are not going to lose ground.

  • A distinctive feature of smokey eye makeup is well-shaded dark shadows and eyeliner. A light haze will be appropriate for both daytime and evening makeup. The most important thing is to choose the right shades, and not limit yourself to gray-black shades, which many consider classic for “smoky” makeup. The color scheme for your makeup should be selected taking into account your color type. Our simple one will help you determine yours.
  • When choosing colors for makeup, you should also take into account the time of day. For daytime makeup, you should choose warm shades (olive, gold, apricot, sand). For evening - cold (gray, purple, blue, black).
  • Shadows can be applied not only to the upper movable eyelid, but also to the lower one. Transitions from dark to light tones should be smooth, almost imperceptible. And don't skimp on black mascara! It can make your look deeper.

Another element of “smoky” makeup is eyeliner. It doesn’t matter what product you use to create it - liquid liner, eye shadow or soft pencil. The main thing is to remember to carefully shade the boundaries.

The most common mistakes in smokey eye makeup:

    Uneven facial tone. Dark circles under the eyes or other minor skin imperfections can instantly ruin your entire look.

    Neglecting the shadow base. It depends on it how well the shadows are distributed and how long they will last.

    Expressive eyebrows. With bright eye makeup, the eyebrows should also be bright, otherwise they will literally “get lost” on the face. We have already talked about how to properly shape eyebrows with a pencil in the material.

How to do smokey eye makeup?

The most important thing in “smoky” makeup is to choose the right shades and learn how to shade them properly. Natural fluffy brushes will become your indispensable helpers for this. It is also important to know some subtleties in the procedure, which we will describe in our detailed photo instructions: “smoky” makeup will conquer you the first time!

Before applying eye shadow, even out the skin tone of your eyelids. Thanks to this, the colors of the eye shadows on the eyes will look exactly as they look in the palette, the makeup will be “clean” and rich. To do this, you can use a special eyeshadow base, or blend a little foundation or concealer over your eyelids and lightly powder.

Beautiful shading is very important for smokey eye makeup. If your eyeshadow base is too sticky, go over it with a soft fluffy brush and a small amount of nude or translucent powder to prevent the shadow from pooling into the creases of your eyelid base, creating uneven shading.

Using a fluffy natural bristle brush, blend matte light brown shadows across the entire crease of the upper eyelid. The place where you touch the brush first will be the maximum intensity of the color. That is why start moving the brush from the outer corner of the eye. In this area, the greatest darkening looks most harmonious.

Each subsequent color in this eye makeup will be darker than the previous one, and due to the gradual use of increasingly darker shades, the haze on the eyes will be as neat and uniform as possible.

Using the same brush and a medium brown matte eye shadow, deepen the shading on the orbital line. For the crease of the eyelid, always use matte shadows, since this area is the natural recess of the eye and glitter, shimmering or pearlescent textures will not look harmonious. Although there are exceptions - creative and art makeup, in which breaking the rules is often welcome. The “haze” may be completely shimmery, but it’s unlikely to look pretty in real life.

Using a flat natural brush and the darkest, deepest shade of brown eyeshadow, fill the entire eyelid. In this case, it is possible to use both matte and any shining textures. In order to get the most intense shade, use pressing movements with the brush. You can also put a little shadow on the pad of your ring finger and go over the entire eyelid so that the color of the shadow is absolutely even and saturated.

Smoky eye makeup or smoky eyes is a glamorous, sexy, attractive, languid look with a languid look, a powerful weapon that penetrates the strongest armor and goes straight to the heart of even the thickest-skinned “rhino.” Among the leading stars of show business, this is the number one makeup look! Such star beauties as Angelina Jolie, Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, Sarah Jessica Parker, Keira Knightley, Charlize Theron, Paris Hilton, Sienna Miller, Gisele Bundchen were repeatedly spotted with smoky eyes. A light haze is a win-win option for brunettes, blondes, brown-haired women, and redheads.

Three main steps of the “smoky” classics

Smoky makeup, which never loses its relevance, owes its appearance to silent black and white cinema. Smoky makeup at its finest

A distinctive feature of the smoky eyes style is heavily shaded dark shadows and eyeliner. Haze will be appropriate in both daytime and evening makeup. The main thing is to choose the right shades, and not limit yourself to the banal and hackneyed gray-black range, which many have mistakenly elevated to an absolute. The color scheme is determined by the color type of appearance, as well as the place and time of action. Warm shades (pastel, olive, golden, sand, apricot, salmon) are perfect for daytime makeup, and cool shades (black, gray, taupe, tobacco, gray-black, lilac-violet) for evening makeup. Shadows can be applied both to both eyelids and exclusively to the upper one. Smooth, barely noticeable transitions between dark and light shadows allow you to give your look additional depth and special charm. And, of course, never skimp on dark-colored mascara, and for greater expressiveness, it wouldn’t hurt to apply a couple of false eyelashes to the outer edges. Another highlight of smoky eye makeup is eyeliner. Whatever you use to create it - liquid eyeliner, eye shadow or pencil - do not forget to carefully shade the edges.

Master class for those who want to make smokey eyes

  • Preparing the face and eyelids

Cleanses and moisturizes the skin of the face and eyelids. Apply the tone to the entire face, carefully blending it to the middle of the neck. For daytime makeup, we select a tone that is as close as possible to natural, for evening makeup - half a tone lighter. Using a yellow or peach-colored brightening concealer, we work on all noticeable imperfections and blemishes of the skin - pimples, redness, capillary networks, dark circles, swelling, bruises and bags under the eyes. To prevent makeup from “smearing” during the day and losing its captivating charm, apply a little corrective product around the eyes and lightly dust the eyelids with flesh-colored powder.

  • Brows

Using a gray-brown pencil we emphasize the break, making the tail more even. For maximum naturalness, the distance to the break and the head can be emphasized not with a pencil, but with gray-brown shadows, using an applicator or brush.

  • Selection of shadows

When selecting shadows, be guided by eye color, time of day, dress code and the nature of the event. For those with blue and gray eyes, blue-violet colors are perfect. Dark-eyed beauties will look most advantageous with brown and greenish shades. Gray shadows and metallic silver suit almost everyone without exception. To create the perfect haze, we need at least three shades of eyeshadow: light, medium and dark. The main thing is that they are in harmony with each other in color. It is better to choose matte rather than glossy shades of eye shadow and eyeliner. Excessive glare, shine and gloss will create a feeling of swollen eyes, and the look will seem heavy and tired.

  • The order of applying shadows

Apply the middle shade to the crease of the eyelid with gradual expansion towards the outer edge. Light shadows are used closer to the eyebrows. Using nude shadows directly under the eyebrow will help give your look expressiveness, lightness and purity. Apply the darkest and deepest shade as close to the lash line as possible on the upper eyelid and blend thoroughly. All color transition boundaries must be carefully blurred with a brush, cotton swab or sponge!

  • Eyeliner

The most important thing in the smoky makeup technique is to be able to create a hazy effect. To do this, you need to know a couple of tricks of professional makeup artists. So, for eyeliner it is better to choose the darkest color, depending on the chosen shade of eyeshadow. Apply eyeliner along the lash line and blend thoroughly. You can use shadows as an eyeliner, but working with them is a little more difficult, since they can crumble and not lie very evenly. Therefore, if you decide to use shadows rather than a pencil, it is better to apply them wet with an eyeliner brush. Then we begin to gradually blur (shade) the shadows along the upper eyelid along the contour of the eye with a smooth expansion to the outer corner and along the lower eyelid by one third. The result should be a line about two to three millimeters wide, and with an eastern eye shape, it may well reach the crease of the eyelid. Owners of large, expressive eyes can additionally line the inside of the eyelid to create a charming effect of depth of gaze. The result will be a very interesting contrast with the whites of the eyes, which will make the look cleaner and more captivating.

We curl the eyelashes using curlers and cover them with two layers of black mascara, not forgetting to separate the stuck together eyelashes. After applying the first layer, let the mascara dry thoroughly and only then repeat the procedure. Curled eyelashes make the look more open and expressive. Eyelashes in a smokey eye should definitely turn out fluffy, airy and velvety, so do not overdo it so as not to weigh down the look and not spoil the light haze with heavy “drape”.

  • Blush and lipstick

The role of the main violin in smoky makeup is assigned to the eyes, so cheekbones and lips should remain neutral. Too many accents will look not only tasteless and ridiculous, but also vulgar. Is this what you are trying to achieve? The smoky effect should be as mysterious and weightless as a light haze over the surface of the water. We leave the lips almost colorless - we define the outline with a neutral pencil, shading it with a cotton swab, and then apply a light translucent gloss or lipstick of a neutral shade. Ideal colors: nude, pale pink, beige. We select the blush to match the natural blush and carefully shade the transition boundaries. A glamorous version of smoky eyes allows the use of shimmering powder.

That's all the wisdom! Take a look in the mirror - don't you look like a Hollywood star? Better?! That's it!
