  • Choosing thread for sewing on buttons outerwear, give preference to reinforced fibers, they are more durable and wear-resistant.
  • To attach accessories to a winter or demi-season product, use a button with a diameter of 3 to 7 mm. It must be sewn in parallel with the main button, but on the reverse side of the fabric.
  • Keep in mind that when attaching accessories to a leg, you need to match the threads to the color of the fabric, and for flat buttons, to the color of the button.

How to sew on a button with two holes

Before sewing, make markings for fastening using a ruler and a bar of soap. Thread a single thread into the needle, and fasten in the form of a couple of stitches on the material, then bring the needle to the wrong side. Attach a button and inside product, pass the needle through any of the two holes. Sew 3-4 stitches, sewing each. To complete the work, fasten the thread to the back of the fabric and cut.

How to sew on a button with four holes

Pass the sewing thread through the needle, folding it in two layers, and tie a small knot at the end. On the front side of the product, make a small stitch and fasten the thread into a loop, then cut off the knot with scissors. Insert the button into the needle, and make the first puncture, as shown in the photo. For ease of use, divide the holes into pairs and sew each side with 3-5 stitches. Sew all holes individually to avoid skew. Finish sewing by bringing the thread from under the button to the front side, then wrap it around the formed leg 3-4 times. In the last step, pass the thread through the eyelet, tighten it tightly and cut.

  • Fasten the thread to the fabric with one stitch, leaving a knot on the surface, which will later be closed by sewing.
  • Insert the button into the needle and pierce to the wrong side, securing with a stitch.
  • Put the button on the needle in sequence - first pull the thread through one hole, then into the second. Connect the fabric and the buttonhole with a second puncture, bringing the needle to the front side.
  • Insert an auxiliary item between the main part and the fabric, as shown in the photo. Make 3-4 connecting stitches.
  • We finish sewing - remove the needle from the inside and carefully pull out the auxiliary item. Evenly wrap around the rack 2-3 times, tighten the thread and make a loop, cut off the excess.

How to sew a button correctly on a leg to a fur coat, coat, sheepskin coat or jacket? It would seem that it would be simpler, there would be only a needle and thread. However, so that the sewn button does not "dangle" and suddenly come off, you still need to know some secrets and be able to sew on buttons correctly.

Before sewing on a button, pick up a needle and thread

Sewing on a new button is one of the simplest repairs that even a man can do on his own.

If you sew on a button by hand, then first of all, select a needle of the right size and thread of the right color for work.

1. First, decide what kind of button you need. A flat button with two or four holes, or on the reverse side, it should have a stem.
If the button is flat with holes, then you need to select the thread to match the color of the button, but it is imperative that the thread matches the thread that other buttons are sewn on.
The eyelet button is sewn under the button, so the color of the thread no longer plays such an important role.

2. To make it convenient to sew on a button, choose a needle of a suitable size for work - thick, with a large eye - for outerwear, a regular darning needle - for a cotton shirt, a very thin needle - for a silk blouse.

3. Select a suitable thread that matches the thickness of the threads of the weave of the fabric. For an eyelet button on a coat, you can even use floss to clean your teeth. A button sewn with such a thread will hold on very firmly. The denser the fabric, the thicker the thread and, of course, the needle should be. This is especially important for outerwear.

4. Cut at least 50 cm from the spool. Cut the thread with very sharp scissors so that the cut end of the thread can be easily inserted into the eye. It is inconvenient to work with a thread that is too long, and with a short thread you will not be able to sew on a button in one go. Pull the selected thread into the eye of the needle.
Pull the thread through the eye of the needle and align both ends of the thread. Twist the ends of the thread together, wrap a couple of times around your index finger and continue twisting with your fingers so that a knot is formed. Cut off the remaining ends below the knot, leaving about 0.5 cm.

Now you can sew on a button

The simplest technique for sewing on a button is that a match is laid between the button and the fabric. This will allow in the future to wind the "leg", which is necessary for almost any button. The leg is needed not only to make it easy to thread it through the loop, the leg protects the fabric, such as a silk blouse or a dress made of thin material, from tearing.

For thin fabrics, you can use a paper match, twisted into a tube of paper.
To sew a large flat button to a heavy woolen coat, use a wooden oven match. Do not use a toothpick instead of a match, it is easy to prick.

Find the place where the button was sewn before. Carefully remove the remnants of old thread. Now pierce the fabric from the inside, trying to get to the point where the thread previously passed. Pull it out completely, circle past the match and thread it through the eyelet, pulling the thread taut. Stick the needle on the other side of the match.
If the buttons have four holes, apply stitches with a cross or two parallel stripes, following the pattern in which other buttons are sewn, remembering to draw each next stitch from different sides of the match.
After making about ten stitches, bring the needle out in the gap between the button and the fabric.

How to make a button leg

Pull out the match carefully. Wrap the thread remaining in the needle around the vertical threads so that a kind of stem forms. For the leg, you will need to wrap the thread around at least five times. Then insert the needle through the base of the stem into the tissue. Pull the needle from the inside out and pass it through the stem again, repeating this operation several times.

For the last time, insert the needle through the stalk of the stem on the wrong side of the fabric, cut the thread with scissors almost near the eye of the needle and tie the two ends of the thread into a strong knot on the wrong side of the fabric. Trim off excess threads. The button stem is now securely fastened.

It would seem that a simple operation - to sew on a button, sometimes causes difficulties and you have to sew it on "how it goes." Any, even the simplest, business has its own subtleties, including the ability to sew a button.
The imposition of stitches in a button with a cross, a square or in another way, if it has four holes, is a matter of your imagination and taste.

How to sew on a button on a sewing machine

At the factory, buttons are sewn on a special sewing machine However, at home this is also possible. After all, almost every household sewing machine with a zigzag stitch, there is a foot for sewing on buttons.
It is only necessary to master this operation a little and the process of sewing on buttons will become easy and fast.

Firstly, the foot must be used specifically for sewing on buttons so that it fixes the button well. Under a foot that is not designed for sewing on buttons, it can slip and you will break the needle on the machine and scratch or even split the button with the needle.
Sew on a button with a foot carefully at minimum speed, having previously set the required zigzag width according to the distance between the holes of the button.

Greetings to all lovers of sewing! Let's talk about such details of our clothes as buttons. They are present on almost all of our things and from time to time they come off, get lost, and they need to be restored. ? Surely, many of you have faced this problem. Not everyone likes this activity, but sometimes it is simply necessary to do this.

At first glance, it may seem that nothing is easier than sewing on, it can’t even be. I think so too, but to my great surprise, some of my clients bring me their clothes only for me to sew buttons on them. And, oddly enough, there are women among them.

It would seem that for women such a thing should not be a problem, but not everyone likes to do something with their hands, including sewing on buttons. It's not hard at all to do this, though. But, it is desirable to do it correctly. That is what we will do. Perhaps you will learn something new for yourself.

Buttons are different. The most common of them:

Buttons with two holes

Buttons with four holes

Buttons on the leg (on the half leg)

Each of them is used for different types of clothing. It depends on the size of the button and on the product on which it will be sewn. Let's take a look at some of these uses. I have prepared a detailed step-by-step photo report. For clarity, I took thick threads and materials of a contrasting color, so that you can see better. On real products, it is desirable to select threads to match the button.

How to sew on a button with two holes

These buttons are the most commonly used. First you need to draw a cross with soap, the center of which will coincide with the center of the button. Tie a tight knot and cut off the excess thread if it sticks out of the knot. Pierce the fabric with a needle as shown in the photo. The knot should be between the diagonal lines, and the needle should come out on the sewing line of the button.

After that, we put the button on the needle and sew it with a few stitches to the fabric. If the thread is folded in half, then it is enough to pierce three times. It is desirable to fall into the same punctures. Before completing the process, the needle should be brought out between the fabric and the button on the front side, and a knot should be tied, grabbing the threads. For strength, it is enough to make two (three) such knots and cut the thread.

Here is the button sewn on. Pay attention to what the reverse side looks like. There are no knots on it. The threads lie evenly and are concentrated in one place.

How to sew on a button with four holes

These buttons are also used on different types products, from to coats. I took a big button. Since there are more holes in it than in the previous one, there can be many sewing options. It depends on your imagination. I decided to sew with a diagonal cross, so I placed the holes at an angle to the intended soap cross. If the holes are arranged along the lines, then the sewing principle will be the same.

Similarly to a button with two holes, we make three punctures, in the directions we need, and bring the needle out between the fabric and the button on the front side. This can be done both from below and from above.

Buttons with four holes are not very convenient in the sense that the area for sewing them to the fabric is larger than the slot of the buttonholes into which they are threaded. Therefore, very often they stretch the loop. To prevent this from happening, it is better to pull the threads a little. To do this, under the button, you need to make two (three) windings of the main threads. After that, tie a knot on the threads.

Cut the thread and finish the job. The button is sewn on, a neat cross turned out on the back.

How to sew a button on a leg

AT this case the knot also remains on the front side, but can be located on the sewing line of the button.

After several punctures, the thread is brought to the front side and secured with a knot under the button head. The knot is attached to the threads, not to the fabric.

No knots are visible under the hat, but on the back everything is clean and smooth.

How to sew a button on a coat

On products such as (fur coats, sheepskin coats), and on those whose selection is rather thick, buttons are sewn in a special way. In one place, not one, but two buttons are used. From the front side and from the back side. This is done for strength.

A knot is tied and the fabric is pierced in the same way as in the case of a button with two holes. The thread is threaded into one of the holes top button, and a match is placed under it. This is done in order to create a distance between the surface of the material and the button.

Then at the same time it is necessary to sew the top and bottom buttons through the same punctures. After several punctures, the thread is brought to the front side, the match is removed, and all the threads are pulled over with several turns of the main thread. A false leg is created on which the button will be held. It is necessary to tie a few knots and fasten the thread. The height of the leg depends on the thickness of the selection of the product.

Here's what happened as a result. Buttons are sewn on both sides.

As you can see, there really is nothing complicated, and everything is done elementarily. Now you know how to sew on buttons by hand. If you have never tried it, then now you will definitely succeed.

1. When using a two-ply thread (when sewing on buttons with holes), make sure that the thread is not twisted. Otherwise, the threads may not lie very evenly, which will ruin appearance buttons.

2. For thin fabrics, it is better to use thin threads, for thicker ones, thicker ones.

3. When using a thread in two additions, there should not be many punctures. Two or three is enough. If there is a single thread, then there should be more punctures, which may not be very good for the material.

4. Make sure that the direction of the threads, when sewing on buttons, is parallel to the buttonhole, and not perpendicular to it.

Knowing these little tricks, you can sew on any button without any problems. And, if you want to make an unusual detail out of it on your product, then I suggest you look at the article "". There you will see how creative these ordinary items can be. With your own hands, you can make a button not just an ornament, but a talisman that will fulfill your desires.

I hope that everything has become clear to you in the issue of sewing on buttons by hand, and now you can easily handle it yourself.

How to make rubber veins on fabric

Hello my dear readers!

Recently, my first-grader son was given a task at school to bring fabric, thread with a needle and various buttons. They were taught to sew on buttons, both boys and girls. The son did very well, and received "5". He brought home a cloth with neatly sewn buttons :), even without loops and knots.

Buttons sewn on by my son

And I thought that the ability to sew on buttons correctly is very, very useful. And I decided to write about it. I am sure that any mother from time to time has to sew on these same buttons. And if your children are lively, active, mobile and inquisitive, you have to pick up a thread with a needle and return the buttons to their place more often :).

And you and I are also sewing mothers, so you can’t do without sewing on buttons.

And on purchased items, buttons are often sewn on rather weakly, and they often need to be sewn on again. Otherwise, they will get lost, and you will have to look for a replacement that is suitable in color and shape, which is not always easy.

Selection of threads and buttons

The threads with which the buttons are sewn must be strong enough so that the button does not easily come off. To check, you can try to break the thread with your hands. If you succeeded, and quite easily, definitely, a button sewn with such threads will also easily come off.

(Out of habit, I already check all new threads this way. Periodically, there are such defective threads that are easily torn, regardless of the thickness and composition of the threads).

The thickness of the threads must match the size of the button and the product on which it is sewn. For example, to sew a button on a summer shirt, you should not take thick threads.

The thread color depends on the button itself. If the button is on the leg, the threads are taken in the color of the fabric. If the button has 2 or 4 holes, match the color of the button.

(Here I am sewing a button not on a product, but simply on a piece, so for clarity I take white threads).

How to secure the thread when sewing on buttons

Here you can and should do without knots. To do this, fold the thread in two additions. Insert the ends of the thread into the eye of the needle. We grab a few threads of fabric with a needle in the place where the button will be sewn on, and thread the thread, but not completely.

Thread a needle and thread into the resulting loop

and gently tighten.

Thread, you can sew on a button.

How to sew on a button

It depends on the type of button. It can be with 2 or 4 holes, or it can be on a leg.

A button with holes is sewn on so that there is a small leg under it. That is, so that it is not tightly pressed to the fabric. This is necessary in order to make it more convenient to fasten it.

It is convenient to use a match or a toothpick here. We put a match under the button and sew.

From the wrong side, we try to make needle punctures in the same places.

Since our thread is folded in half, it is enough to make 3-4 stitches. For a button with 4 holes, 3-4 stitches for each pair of holes.

Then we take out the match from under the button. And we make 6-8 turns of thread under the button. That is, we wrap the threads with which it is sewn to the fabric with a thread under the button.

And we take the thread to the wrong side, where we fix it.

We fix the thread

To do this, from the wrong side we again grab a few threads with a needle, you can also grab the fabric.

We thread a thread through them, and insert the needle into the resulting loop again.

Tighten the thread tightly.

Thus, we tied a knot, which secured the thread.

For greater strength, you can do this again so that there are 2 knots. Do not be afraid, they are very small, neat and inconspicuous.

And one more little secret :). In this place it is better not to cut the thread. It will not turn out very neatly, and there is some chance that the knots will unravel.

If you are sewing a button to a product, then bring the thread between two layers of fabric. And cut, leaving the thread to the button about 3-5 cm. These 3-5 cm of thread will remain inside the product, and will not be noticeable, either from the front or from the wrong side. But you can be calm that nothing will bloom :).

Here I sewed a button simply to a piece of fabric, and brought the thread to the front side, but under the button, and cut it off there.

Thus, there are no “tails” left on the inside :).

And it’s easier to sew a button on a finished leg

We fix the thread in the same way. And with 3-4 stitches we sew a button by the leg.

It is no longer necessary to wrap the button with threads and make the leg yourself, it is ready on the button. On the wrong side, we also try to make punctures of the game in the same places.

Then we fix the thread in the same way, and take it between the layers of fabric. And buttons are never sewn onto one layer of fabric.

And here's what I found on the Internet

Perhaps you will be interested. In general, buttons with 4 holes can be sewn in different ways. Stitches can be placed in different ways.

Of course, the easiest way to sew on a button is to give it to your wife. But, if, by an incredible coincidence, you yourself are a wife, then below you will learn as much about buttons and how to sew them on as you never knew in your life.

What are the buttons

If you look globally, then there are only two types of buttons:

flat(with two, three or four holes). These are the main buttons on a coat, raincoat, jacket or jacket. They are sewn with the execution of a rack of threads (below the instruction). It helps to avoid deformation of the loop and facilitates fastening. Flat buttons can be sewn without a stand, but only for beauty and without functional load (for example, on the slots of jacket sleeves).

Buttons on the leg . They are sewn on without a stand (the “leg” on a button takes over the function of the stand). How to sew a button "on the leg"? More on that below.

Choosing the right button

If you are sewing on a button that hasn't come off, but want to renew the buttons on your outerwear, then take their shape, color and size seriously. Of course, they are of such unearthly beauty that further “everything is in a fog” and you want to buy it right there and sew it on right now. But it is better to pull yourself together, otherwise the result may be unpredictable.

There are only three rules:

· Buttons should be in harmony with the style and material of your clothing. Therefore, carefully choose the color and shape.

· Buttons should not be too small or too large. Otherwise, they will either unfasten endlessly and thereby incredibly annoy, or while fastening them, you will break three nails, earn two calluses and break the loop. How to understand which size is correct? Try. Take a button that has not yet been sewn on and conduct an “in-out” experiment with it.

· When choosing a button on a leg, evaluate the correspondence of the size of the leg to the thickness of the material to which you will sew. So that it does not happen that it will sag or, conversely, there will be difficulties with fastening.

Choosing the right needle

Everything is very simple here:

A thick needle is suitable for sheepskin coats, fur coats, leather jackets and coats.

Fine needle - for lightweight cotton fabrics and medium-sized buttons.

Choosing the right thread

thread color

For buttons on legs, the thread should match the color of the fabric.

For flat buttons, match the color of the button itself.

thread quality

Cotton threads are not the best choice unless sewing on buttons is your lifelong hobby. They wear out and tear quickly.

Reinforced threads - the best option! One might say eternal.

And, of course, the thicker the fabric, the thicker and stronger the thread should be.

Thread thickness

It is better to use a thread folded in half (total will be 4 additions). This is not so much for the sake of strength, but for the sake of saving you time. Two, three stitches and the button will be sewn on!

Thread length

The doubled thread should not be longer than the distance from the elbow to the wrist of your hand. Otherwise, you will get confused and tired of pulling the needle to the ceiling.

The buttonhole is a must!

Since we sew buttons to outerwear, we cannot do without a buttonhole.

A buttonhole is a plastic flat button of the simplest form with round or elongated holes, usually transparent. It is sewn on from the wrong side, simultaneously with the main button. That is, it was created not for beauty, but for reliability.

What is the buttonhole for?

For "heavy" winter clothes(fur coats, sheepskin coats, etc.) buttonholes - this is very important! Because the load on the main buttons is too big. Judge for yourself: either you wrap yourself in a scarf three times and fasten all this beauty on top, then you run after the bus with leaps and bounds, or just walk, but long, thoughtfully and with long strides. Therefore, the top and bottom buttons are especially affected, and all the others are equally affected. And the buttonholes are something that greatly simplifies their life and relieves the load at times.

Sew on!

So, the thread was folded in half, threaded into the needle, a knot was tied at the end, the extra tail was cut off.

Prepare your fabric. If wrinkled, iron or steam.

If you are sewing on a torn button, then get rid of the remnants of the thread in the place of its former habitat, everything should be clean.

Mark the location of the button. Of course, everything should be symmetrical and even.

Sewing a flat button

So that the fabric in the button area does not stretch or tear, it must be sewn with a small stand of threads. The length of the rack should correspond to the thickness of the side on which the loops are made.

little trick

To make a rack of threads, you can use a match, a pen rod or a roll of paper of the thickness you need. Sounds scary, but it's easy to do.

1. Start from the wrong side.

2. Pierce the fabric with a needle at the intended point. The knot will remain on the surface, later we will close it with a buttonhole.

3. On the needle, on the front side, put on a button, first with one, then with the other hole.

4. The second time, pierce with a needle from the front side, stepping back 1-2 mm from the first puncture.

5. Pull the button to the fabric. Not tight - leave room to form a rack.

6. Bring the needle through the hole in the buttonhole.

8. Make the last puncture and bring the needle out between the button and the material.

9. Form a dense and strong rack, evenly wrapping it around with 3-4 stitches. Make sure that the upholstery does not gather in one place, otherwise you will get an ugly thickening.

10. Perform the last puncture under the button post, bring the needle between the buttonhole and the material, fasten the thread in any convenient way and cut.

Important!

Decorative (finishing, non-functional) buttons do not have a stand.

Sew on the button "on the leg".

Great news! For a button “on a leg”, there is no need to make a stand of threads, which greatly simplifies our life. The exception is a very wide bead thickness.

The button should be positioned so that its stem is parallel to the buttonhole.

1. Perform the first puncture with a needle and thread, from the wrong side, strictly to the intended point. The knot will remain on the surface, later we will close it with a buttonhole.

2. Put the button on the loop and make a second piercing of the fabric, stepping back 1-1.5 mm from the first and pulling the button close enough to the surface.

3. Insert the needle sequentially into the holes of the buttonhole and puncture at the very first point. Pull the button tight!

4. Form 3-4 similar stitches.

5. Bring the needle between the fabric and the button and sew two wrap stitches to form a loop and tighten the knot.

6. Make the last puncture under the leg of the button, bring the needle to reverse side and carefully cut the threads with scissors.

How to fasten buttons correctly?

Yes, yes, it’s not enough to know how to sew on a button, even for such a banal daily action as fastening, there are instructions. And the one who observes them with a 99% probability will forever forget what stretched and torn loops are.

In this case, the main thing is not to force the loop. Buttons must be inserted exactly along the buttonhole slot. That is, if the loop is horizontal, we insert the button horizontally, if it is vertical, we insert it vertically.

When unbuttoning buttons, the rule is exactly the same. Inserted along the buttonhole and gently pushed the button inside out.

That's all! But, of course, sewing on buttons is a thing that is better to see once than to read a hundred times. Therefore, be sure to watch our video, which will remove all doubts and teach, for example, how to professionally sew a button on a coat!
