DIY sombrero made of cardboard. Making a Mexican sombrero hat with your own hands Video: Decorative Sombrero hats

Sombrero... What do you associate this word with? Perhaps with hot and sunny Mexico, where this headdress, by the way, is part national costume. Or maybe you immediately imagine a warm sandy beach where you can sunbathe, hiding your face from the scorching rays of the sun under this peculiar hat. In any case, if you are interested in how to make a sombrero with your own hands, this article will be useful to you.

Let's start with the fact that you can easily make a sombrero even from ordinary cardboard. But if you are a real needlewoman and know how to weave wonderful things from straw, then try weaving a sombrero instead. Then you will have an analogue of a real headdress worn by indigenous Mexicans. Well, if you are just starting your handicraft journey, then we suggest you make a sombrero from thick cardboard and fabric. Even those who have never made anything like this can do this.

Sombrero made of cardboard and fabric

You will need thick cardboard (a couple of sheets large size), scissors, fabric for drapery (velor or velvet are best), as well as all kinds of beads, braids, chains, in general, everything you want to decorate your creation with. And of course, don’t forget about glue or thread, because the components of the hat will need to be connected with something.

First, draw and cut out a circle with a diameter of 40 cm from cardboard. In this circle, cut a hole in the center with a diameter of 15 cm. You have the brim of a sombrero. Now you need to make the crown. To do this, take a piece of cardboard of the same size as the height you plan to make the crown, and roll it into a cone shape (like a bag). Secure with glue or thread so that the cone does not fall apart.

Now our task is to connect the fields and crown with each other. They can be sewn with threads, or they can simply be glued together. To make gluing more convenient, bend the lower edges of the crown upward by about 1 cm, coat them with glue and attach tightly to the brim. The sombrero frame is ready, let the parts grip each other well.

Since now our sombrero looks quite “poor” and it’s clearly impossible to go anywhere in it, you’ll drape it with fabric and then decorate it. Take measurements from the hat and cut the required amount of fabric. Folding the edges of the fabric, carefully shape the hat. To make the brim of the sombrero appear more voluminous, you can put a small cotton or foam layer under the fabric.

The last step left is decoration. Although, if you like the sombrero just the way it is, you can leave everything as it is. You can decorate a hat with large beads strung on threads, you can do embroidery, or you can buy special applied designs for clothes in the store. The choice is yours, show your imagination.

You can cut several leather ribbons and weave them into a beautiful braid. Then lay it beautifully over the brim of the hat and secure it. The decoration work is the most interesting, because now you are giving your hat that unique look, thanks to which handmade style work is so valued. It turns out to be a unique thing that only you will have.

This headdress can be worn to the beach in the summer, or taken with you to the dacha. Since making a sombrero is very simple, you can make yourself several versions of such a hat and change them periodically. Well, if you have a little daughter, then give her such a gift - she will probably be happy.

The sombrero is an element of the national Mexican costume; it is a hat with a cone-shaped crown and wide, upturned brim. Even novice needlewomen can easily make this colorful headdress on their own. It is suitable for a costume party or a matinee in kindergarten, and if desired, the sombrero can also be worn in the countryside, because its large brim perfectly protects from the sun. Below is detailed master class c step by step photos the process of making a sombrero quickly and easily with your own hands from scrap materials.

How to make a sombrero with your own hands from paper

This is the easiest way to make a headdress, since you do not need to glue the crown separately; it can be replaced with any object of a suitable shape.

  • dense colored double sided paper bright color;
  • a flower pot made of lightweight plastic or a mayonnaise bucket;
  • white and colored paint;
  • brush;
  • glue or double-sided tape;
  • scissors;
  • decorative elements: colored threads, cords and ribbons.
Work order.

Cover the flower pot with 1-2 layers of white paint and let it dry. Then we turn it over, put it on paper and trace it along the outline with a pencil. From the edge of the circle we set aside the required width of the margins and draw another circle. We cut out the part, make perpendicular cuts along the inner contour in increments of 1.5-2 cm. We carefully bend the resulting fringe upward.

We carefully bend the outer part of the fields upward, stepping back from the edge about 5 cm. We paint the pot, applying with a brush wide stripes of bright colors most loved by Mexicans: yellow, black, green and red. To ensure that the stripes are even, we make markings using tape and apply paint along its contours. To make the colors more vibrant, it is advisable to apply them in 2-3 layers with mandatory intermediate drying. Apply glue or double-sided tape with a high adhesion rate to the inner rim of the fields. Carefully place the inverted pot with dried paint on the margins, aligning its edges with the hole in the paper, and glue the resulting crown, pressing firmly over the entire surface.

We decorate the finished sombrero to your liking. The easiest way is to throw bright twisted silk cords with tassels over the crown and tie them in a knot. The embroidery on the margins looks very nice. To do this, we use a needle with thick threads of contrasting color to the fields. We embroider simple Mexican motifs: intersecting straight lines, diamond-shaped mesh, stripes, triangles and zigzags. The paper sombrero is ready!

Let's try to make our headdress out of cardboard

A more complex and very effective sombrero is made from cardboard. In this case, all its parts are cut out from the same material and glued together.

Required materials and equipment:
  • thin yellow cardboard (double-sided);
  • colored paper;
  • PVA glue;
  • pencil;
  • scissors;
  • thread and needle;
  • compass, protractor, ruler.
Work order.

We measure the circumference of the head. We build a drawing on cardboard using a compass, ruler and protractor. An approximate drawing is shown in the diagram below, your dimensions may vary.

Carefully cut out all the details. We glue the crown (detail B in the diagram), while simultaneously bending the triangular flaps outward. We glue the bottom to the crown, then mount the crown to the brim. The valves should be under the fields. While the glue is drying, you can place something heavy on the joint area.

We glue the strip (detail D in the diagram), connecting it into a ring, and bend the valves outward. We glue it to the brim of the sombrero with flaps under the part, forming the lapel of the headdress. To prevent the cardboard from warping and to make the adhesive joint stronger, you can briefly put the parts under the press. We glue another part A, as shown in the photo below, to close the valves and give the product greater strength.

If you use regular white cardboard, it is advisable to paint it straw yellow. You can draw lines with a pencil that imitate the horizontal weave of straw.

After the glue has dried, we begin decorating the hat. To do this, cut out equilateral triangles from red paper with a height equal to the height of part D, and glue them along the entire flap of the fields. We cut out smaller triangles from green paper and glue them between the red triangles to create an even border of base material around each element. We decorate the crown in the same way. Here you can show your imagination and alternate triangles with stripes or zigzags.

Using a needle and thread, we make a loop under the brim so that the sombrero can stay on the head and not fly off. You can pass a cord through the brim, the knots of which need to be tightened under the chin. As an additional decoration, we use tassels glued to the crown or fields of the image in the Mexican style, etc.
