Topiary is a small decorative tree self made. Usage paper napkins will be the most simple option when creating a flower tree with your own hands. This is a simple creative process that makes it very easy to create a fashionable decorative element for your home. Below are master classes that will help you easily implement your idea.

How to make topiary?

At first glance it seems: what could be simpler than an ordinary napkin? But it was able to become an important element of design work. Its great advantage is that it can act both as a material that makes the product more dense (for example, it can be used to wrap wire), and as one of the decorative parts (napkins can be glued to the surface of glass or wood products) . The most important factor is the minimum price for this decorative element, in contrast to most professional design materials.

Materials we will need:

  • The most common cheap paper napkins.
  • Scissors.
  • Stapler.
  • Threads.
  • Glue gun.
  • Newspaper.
  • Pot.
  • A stick for the base of a tree.
  • Acrylic paint.
  • Beads.
  • Ribbons.
  • Gypsum.

Important! The size of the flowers on the finished product will depend on the size of the napkins used. The larger it is, the larger and more beautiful the flower will look on your product.

Sequence of actions when making topiary:

  • Fold the napkin in half to form a rectangle.
  • After this, fold it in half again so that you have a square shape.
  • Use a stapler to secure the middle and cut out a circle.

Important! It is not necessary to cut the napkin in a circle. Certain irregularities will make the flower look more natural. Also, to make the flower look fuller, you can make cuts in a circle using scissors.

  • Lift each layer of napkin to create airy, beautiful flowers.

Important! You need to make as many of these flowers as possible so that there is enough to cover the entire tree. Using green napkins you can make petals for crafts.

  • Let’s move on to the base of our DIY topiary made from napkins. Crumple 2-3 newspapers into a ball with a diameter of about 8 cm and wrap it with thread in a circle. There is a second option - buy a ready-made foam ball in the store.
  • Pre-dry the stick for the base, intended for a decorative element, and cover it with acrylic paint or wrap it with a satin ribbon and decorate it with beads.
  • Glue the finished newspaper ball to the stick. If you choose the second option, simply attach a foam ball to a tree trunk.
  • Fill the flowerpot with a mixture of gypsum, fix the stem with the ball evenly in the pot.
  • Glue each flower very carefully to the crown of the tree.

Important! The most convenient way for you to do this at this stage is to use a glue gun.

  • Decorate the flowers with beads, rhinestones or any other decoration materials.

Your DIY napkin topiary is ready! This is a wonderful decoration for any holiday or an excellent handmade gift, which is valued much more than decorative items from the store. You can also decorate any corner in your home that will not go unnoticed by your guests!

Small topiaries will decorate a windowsill or display window. Using a similar principle, you can make balloons that will look creative at a festive event.

Good afternoon, friends! Today I have my boasts - my first DIY topiaries. I have long been attracted to these beautiful decorative trees in the photo, and finally I decided to make them myself. I watched a video of what others were doing and began to think about what material I should use to create my first works.

To begin with, I tried to make the simplest topiaries: from coffee beans and from napkins. As it turns out, these are the most popular types of topiary.

Moreover, everything turned out topsy-turvy for me, first I made it from the materials that I had at home, I just bought napkins and braid, and then I began to study what the needlewomen advised.

So I will write a step-by-step guide, I took photos and videos of some points, but I don’t pretend to be a master class for beginners.

Topiary - tree of happiness

A small artificial tree, which is a topiary, is considered a tree of happiness, as it brings good luck and prosperity to our home, creates comfort, beauty, good mood and can serve as a talisman.

The types of topiary are very diverse: they can be very miniature and not so, both classic in the form of a round crown standing in a flower pot, and made in the shape of a heart, floating from a cup or made on an inverted glass.

And at the Masters Fair you can buy a topiary as a gift: the price for such a product averages from 500 to 4000 rubles.

But you can try to make a decorative tree with your own hands.

What you need for topiary

For crown, to choose from:

  • coffee beans
  • paper napkins
  • artificial flowers
  • shells
  • bumps
  • satin ribbons
  • candies
  • fruits
  • cotton pads
  • coins
  • banknotes
  • beads
  • knitted roses and other flowers
  • decorative butterflies
  • cereals
  • corrugated paper
  • and generally everything that can come to mind.

These elements are glued using a heat gun onto a base, which is suitable for foam blank(ball, heart, triangle) or papier-mâché.

Topiary ball You can also make it from foil, newspaper and even polyurethane foam.

Trunk for topiary made from any available materials: wire, twigs, pencil, bamboo sticks, etc.

The tree is fixed to stand, a flower pot is best suited for this purpose, but you can also use different cups, teapots, and jars.

As a fixer, gypsum, alabaster, cement, and putty prepared according to the instructions for the material are used.

In addition, materials will be needed for additional decoration of the crown and trunk. Let your imagination tell you how to decorate the topiary: with ribbons, beads, paper, organza, lace, etc.

Simple DIY topiary: step-by-step description

Therefore, I used Moment glue as glue, and ordinary clay, which is plentiful around my house, to secure the trunk in the stand. Maybe it's not best option, but when dry it is very hard and the trees hold up perfectly in it, and I am not going to turn my topiary on its head.

I also made the balls with my own hands, although I initially planned to buy them, but then I saw videos on how they can be easily made.

For testing, I chose the simplest topiaries.

Topiary made from coffee beans

This is my first job where I studied.

  1. The first thing I did was make a ball out of aluminum foil. It’s very simple: I unrolled a piece about 30 cm long from a roll of foil, folded it in four, and then, holding the edges, crumpled them and crumpled them into a ball with my hands. At first it seemed too small to me, so I rolled a few more layers of foil on top.

The ball turned out to be very dense and almost even.

Coffee topiary would have to be made on a dark base so that the gaps between the grains would not be noticeable. Usually the foam ball is painted with brown paint before the grains are glued.

Although I thought about it, I didn’t have paint, and the ball was made of foil, I don’t know if it would have been painted. So I came up with another way out of this situation.

And only later I found out that it was possible to wrap it with a bandage colored in coffee or tea.

  1. So, the base - the ball is ready, the next step would be to insert the barrel into it.

But first I glued the coffee beans, I saw in videos that they do this too. In the case of coffee, this is not important, but if the crown of the tree is made of fragile materials, then during the joining process there is a risk of damaging them.

I glued the grains one at a time, starting from the central part, i.e., first along the diameter, and then gradually moved further.

After drying, I applied a second layer of coffee to the gaps. So I solved this problem, and the ball turned out to be more voluminous.

  1. For the trunk, I took three bamboo sticks from an old napkin that began to fall apart.

I wrapped them with twine, placing them at the top and bottom with glue.

I made a hole in the ball with scissors, dripped a little glue into it and inserted the stem.

  1. The most enjoyable moment in this whole process for me was decorating the jar for the stand.

At first I tried on a flower pot, but it turned out to be too big for my small topiary, then I found an old salt shaker that had been lying idle for a long time.

She wrapped it with twine, and along the upper edge she glued two pigtails, also woven from twine.

Additionally, I decorated it with some finishing beads; I once bought them specifically for decorating something. I love this jar so much!

  1. She poured clay into the stand, watered it with water and planted her tree there. Placed coffee beans on top.

6. I attached a twine bow to the trunk.

This homemade topiary made from coffee beans looks great next to the twine box that I once made.

Topiary made from napkins

I wanted to make the second tree of happiness from paper napkins in two colors - white and pink.

I learned how to make flowers from napkins when I came up with panels on a hoop with pompoms. Last time I only briefly touched on this, but now I want to tell and show the whole process of their creation.

How to make a flower from a napkin

  1. Fold the napkin in half.
  2. And in half again. You can cut along the fold.
  3. We fasten it in the central part with a stapler.
  4. Cut out a circle from a napkin.
  5. Now, starting from the top, lift each layer of the napkin upward. It is important to do this with each layer.
  6. When all the layers are lifted up, carefully straighten the edges.

That's all, the work is painstaking, but quite simple.

It took a lot of flowers for the topiary, I completed several of them already in the process of gluing them onto the ball.

This time I made the ball from newspaper.

How to make a topiary ball from newspaper

The newspaper must be torn or cut into A4 pieces (the size of a regular standard sheet for printing).

The first piece of paper needs to be crumpled into a ball, and then the ball should be wrapped in a second sheet of newspaper. Wrap the resulting ball in the next sheet and thus use several sheets until the right size ball.

The paper ball needs to be wrapped with threads so that it does not unfold.

I glued the ends of the thread.

This time I used a twig as a trunk for the topiary. First, I wrapped it in white paper and inserted it into the ball, making a hole in it and securing it with glue.

But then I decided to change the color: I pasted over the trunk pink napkin, and put a string of beads on top.

Among the household items, I didn’t find anything suitable where I could attach a topiary made from napkins.

I had to go looking for it at Fixprice, where I spotted a cute candlestick.

Well, to complete the look, I made a bow from pink satin braid with polka dots. I studied for a long time, watching the video tutorial, and on the third attempt I depicted something, but I’m afraid that I won’t be able to repeat it.

These are my first simple DIY topiaries. I really like it. I have a desire to do more, but my next idea already requires a lot of time to implement and I have put it off for now.

And my video:

After deciding that there should be flowers on the table, I thought about the question of how to make topiary with my own hands, because... constantly change flower arrangements It's expensive in January.
Topiaries came to us from the times of palace luxury. When gardeners trimmed the crowns of trees and bushes in the form of balls, figures, birds. In floristry, giving an ideal shape to a bouquet by trimming is also very popular. Well, our housewives have learned to create a cozy atmosphere in the apartment with the help of mini trees. They set off the interior if they are made in appropriate colors and look unusual.

This tree looks quite unusual, ideal for the kitchen, because... it eliminates food odors and freshens the air.

We will need:

  • Any vertical base for the trunk (stick)
  • Styrofoam ball
  • Pot, cache-pot, cup or flowerpot
  • Coffee beans
  • Twine
  • Ribbons of different widths
  • Sackcloth
  • Thermal gun
  • Construction gypsum

First you need to wrap the stick with twine. To do this, coat one edge of the stick with a heat gun and glue the end of the twine.

Choose the length of the stick yourself, depending on how tall you want the topiary to be.
The end of the twine also needs to be secured with glue.

Let's start decorating the pot. To do this, take our burlap and begin to wrap the pot.

Coat the pot with glue and wrap it with burlap.

Excess around the edges can be trimmed off.

To avoid any white gaps, paint the foam ball black.

We cut a hole in the ball for the barrel. Lubricate the end of the barrel generously with glue.

Let's start covering the ball with coffee beans. You can do this in different ways.

For example, we apply glue to the ball, and then put a lot of coffee beans in a handful, pressing them to the surface.

But all the grains that are not fixed will scatter in all directions.

You can do it differently. Glue one grain at a time, which will take longer, but be more accurate.
You need to work quickly because the glue cools quickly.

To make the pot stable, we will fill it with plaster. To do this, pour water into the plaster and stir.

After filling the pot with plaster, you need to insert the tree into it and hold it for a while so that it is fixed.

The plaster will dry in ten hours.
We begin to decorate the finished composition. We make bows from ribbons and glue them to the trunk.

You can use beads, twine bows, dried lemon, cinnamon sticks and other decorative materials.

Instead of sticks for the barrel, you can use skewers; they are sold in grocery and hardware stores.

Master class: topiary from napkins

Napkins are always at hand. And they have a huge number of functions, so why not make a topiary decoration out of them? Let's look at a simple method and an effective master class.

We will need:

  • Flowerpots
  • Round cable channel (stick, skewers)
  • Newspaper
  • Thermal gun
  • Napkins
  • Decor
  • Alabaster

For the topiary ball you will use newspapers.

First you need A4 size sheets. We crumple the first sheet into a ball.

We wrap the second and subsequent ones around it.

The large ball needs to be wrapped with thread so that the edges of the newspaper do not protrude.

Now we make a hole in the newspapers with scissors and insert the barrel into it, securing it with hot glue.

A foam ball of this diameter will cost you 50 rubles in the store.

Take napkins and fold them in half.

And again in half. And cut along the second fold line.

We fasten it in the middle with a stapler.

We cut each piece into a circle shape and bend each layer towards the middle, so we form a flower.

We wrap the topiary trunk with tape; to do this, attach one end of the tape to glue and wrap it around the trunk in a spiral.

Glue flowers onto the ball. To do this, apply hot glue to each flower.

You can decorate with ribbon rings. To do this, wrap the tape around your finger, maybe twice, and glue it at the base. You can use a needle to attach the ribbon ring to the topiary.

We put the alabaster in a flower pot, insert the topiary in the middle and wait for it to dry.

Alabaster can be covered with the same flowers from napkins. We wrap the trunk with ribbon and make a beautiful bow.

If there is room left, you can put sweets in the pot.

Topiary made of satin ribbons step by step

Ribbons allow you to give topiary festive look, but they will also turn out beautiful roses. There are a lot of ways to make flowers from satin ribbons and this art is called kanzashi. We will consider only one option, but the easiest one.

A foam ball can be purchased in Chinese online stores, fishing stores, and craft stores.

  • Ribbons

  • Pencil, twig for the trunk
  • Alabaster

Take a pencil and determine the middle in the ball. We make a recess and fix the pencil with glue.

Wrap tape around the trunk of the topiary. Periodically lubricate the barrel with hot glue.

For ribbon roses, we use satin ribbons 5 cm wide and 2 meters long. This length is enough for 4 flowers.

Glue the flowers with hot glue. We fill the gaps between them with ribbons and ribbons of other colors and textures.

Making roses from satin ribbon

To make roses, take a ribbon and bend the edge at an angle.

From the end of the ribbon, fold the ribbon inwards, forming a bud.

Add glue along the bottom to prevent the rose from blooming.

After this, we tuck the ribbon under itself and we get a petal.

This is how you get a rose, lubricate the edge with glue more often. Make sure that the flower does not turn out square.

The resulting roses are very delicate.

Corrugated paper allows you to make flowers of extraordinary beauty. Fold over each leaf.

  • Styrofoam ball
  • Flowerpots
  • Glue gun
  • Barrel base
  • Corrugated paper
  • Decor
  • Alabaster

As in the previous instructions, you need to wrap the barrel with tape and glue it to the ball.

We make preparations for flowers. We cut out the petals from corrugated paper. We stretch them across so that they take a beautiful bend.

We glue the flower to the ball and decorate the structure.
