History of the holiday in Russia

Wednesday (March 7, 2019) on the eve of the holiday is a shortened working day. And after a four-day weekend you should go to work on Monday, March 12, 2019.

The history of the March 8 holiday in Russia dates back to 1913, when about one and a half thousand people gathered at the St. Petersburg grain exchange for scientific readings concerning women's rights. On February 23, 1917 (according to the old calendar, or the Julian calendar, and March 8, according to the new Gregorian calendar), residents of the Northern capital again went to a rally, this time their slogans demanded “bread and peace.”

This event happened on the eve of the February Revolution: 4 days later, the last monarch of the great Russian Empire, Nicholas II, abdicated the throne, and the provisional government that received the reins of power gave women voting rights.

In 1965, the leadership of the Soviet Union gave International Women's Day the status of a state holiday, and March 8 was declared a day off on an all-Union scale in honor of Soviet communist women who bravely opposed the enemy in wartime and showed dedication in building a peaceful society.

Modern approach

International Women's Day is officially established as a non-working day and is celebrated in almost all republics in the post-Soviet space with minor shifts in date and changes in name.

So, in Russia, Belarus, Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine and a number of CIS countries, the holiday has not changed; in Tajikistan, March 8 is now called Mother’s Day; in Armenia, it is celebrated on April 7 and is called Mother, Beauty and Spring Day. But Lithuania and Estonia, after the collapse of the USSR, hastened to get rid of the remnants of the past and excluded this day from the list of holidays.

As time passed, the holiday of March 8 lost its political implications and became more a day of women-mothers, rather than women-warriors. Husbands, sons, brothers, colleagues strive to congratulate their wives, mothers, sisters and colleagues, to show them their love and affection on this day.

Where else is March 8 celebrated?

Official holiday International Women's Day is recognized not only in Russia, North Korea and China but also, for example, in Burkina Faso. In the rest of the world, March 8 is not considered a public holiday, but every year it is gaining more and more popularity, while maintaining a feminist slant.

The main popularizer of the date today is the UN. In 1977, the United Nations invited member countries to choose any day to celebrate the ideas of women's equality and world peace, which became March 8.

Countries that have supported the UN primarily use the holiday as an occasion to raise social issues important to women. From year to year, the UN chooses a priority topic on which efforts will be directed.

In 2013 it was opposition to violence against women, last year it was “Equality for women - progress for all.” In 2015 - “Inspiring Women - Inspiring Humanity.” The symbol of the holiday is a purple ribbon.

On February 3, 1935, the Presidium of the Bashkir Central Executive Committee again restored the Krasnokamsky district, in connection with this the village of Keltei temporarily became the administrative center of the Kaltasinsky district. And since 1936, administrative institutions have been transferred to the newly built village of Kaltasy.

In 1963 - 64 Kaltasinsky, Krasnokamsky, Tatyshlinsky districts became part of the Yanaulsky district. In March 1964, by the Resolution of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR, the Kaltasinsky district was re-established with its center in the village of Kaltasy, which included all the village councils of the former Krasnokamsk region.

We will rest and relax from March 8 to 11, 2018. The Russian government, drawing up the production calendar, resorted to a postponement. This gave me an extra day off. Thus, the day off from Saturday, January 6 has been moved to Friday, March 9. Let us add that March 7 is considered a pre-holiday day in the working calendar, therefore, the duration of work is reduced by one hour.

Production calendar 2018 with holidays and weekends, approved by the Government of the Russian Federation

Taking into account the postponement of holidays, the 2018 calendar includes six long weekends and holidays:

  • from February 23 to 25 (3 days on the occasion of Defender of the Fatherland Day);
  • from March 8 to 11 (4 days dedicated to International Women's Day);
  • from April 29 to May 2 (4 days to celebrate the Spring and Labor Festival);

  • from November 3 to 5 (3 days, dedicated to the Day national unity).
  • One holiday - May 9 in honor of Victory Day - will be a rest day during the week.

On the eve of non-working holiday the working day is reduced by 1 hour (Part 1 of Article 95 of the Labor Code of the Russian Federation). We will tell you in our material how to notify employees about this and how to write an announcement about a shortened pre-holiday day.

Should I write an announcement about the pre-holiday day?

We discussed the issue in a separate consultation.

The issue of declaring a pre-holiday working day is resolved in a similar way: the employer has no obligation to announce to employees that the working day will be shortened. Therefore, he decides at his own discretion whether or not to notify employees that the pre-holiday working day is shortened by 1 hour.

An announcement to employees about the peculiarities of work on a pre-holiday day can be delegated to the responsible employee of the accounting department or the personnel department, and can also be done by them at their own discretion. After all, the law does not prohibit any employee of the employer from informing other employees about the rights that labor legislation provides them with. And the right to a shortened pre-holiday working day is one of these rights.

Since the announcement of a reduction in the pre-holiday working day is not provided for by law, the form of such an announcement is developed independently by the compiler.
