Hole in jeans, what to do. How to sew torn jeans? How to sew a large hole in jeans manually: methods, tips, recommendations

Jeans can probably be safely called the most popular clothing in the modern world. Every person has them, regardless of gender, and are considered universal, since they are worn by people at any time of the year, in any weather.

On the other hand, such versatility has a certain drawback: the pants wear out too quickly and holes appear on them. Of course, you don’t want to throw away beautiful clothes because of these troubles. And ordering the services of an atelier is too expensive a procedure. Accordingly, the question arises: how to sew up a hole in jeans with your own hands in order to update your clothes without spending money?

Where do the holes appear?

Most often, abrasions appear on the inside - above the knees, near the butt. In addition, jeans tear if they get caught on something sharp. There are the following options for dealing with holes:

  • installing a patch;
  • darning;
  • turning the hole into a beautiful slot.

We should consider in more detail how to implement all these methods.

How to make a patch?

So, the patch must be installed in the following way:

  • First, denim fabric is selected that matches the texture and color.
  • The jeans are laid out and a contour is drawn around the hole.
  • A piece is cut out along the contour made, after which it is stitched using a sewing machine (however, this can be done by hand).
  • The bookmark must be applied with the front side to the back, secured, pinned or basted with large stitches.
  • The patch must be sewn to the jeans from the wrong side.
  • Finally, the product should be turned inside out, and the patch - where it connects to it - should be stitched.

If there are holes in the knees, you can use decorative patches or appliqués.

There is no need to process the edges of the same decorative patches. Sometimes a different fabric is used to make them:

  • If these are summer jeans, chintz or chiffon will do.
  • If your pants are winter, you can resort to leather and wool.

Sometimes patches are given a rectangular, diamond-shaped or square shape. As an option, they are finished with stitches, for which you can use beads, sequins, colored threads, and rhinestones.

Often, needlewomen glue patches using adhesive web.

For this purpose it is necessary:

  • choose an applique that is larger in size than the hole;
  • cut out the applique, reinforce it with doublerin (optionally, non-woven fabric), iron it with an iron;
  • The adhesive web should be cut along the patch, and then the applique should be attached to it using a hot iron.
  • creating and gluing a symmetrical appliqué is a great opportunity to improve the effect.

So dealing with holes in denim using this method is not a difficult task at all. With a little time and effort, the problem with your clothes will be fixed. All that remains is to remember her.

Beautiful darning

It is logical to do darning when the shape of the hole is triangular. A rectangular piece of fabric should be attached to this hole.

If the place is worn out, it must be darned as follows:

  • First iron this area;
  • Reinforce the hole with a lining (from dublerin, for example) on the wrong side;
  • Threads that do not stick must be cut off on the front side;
  • The abrasion must be stitched up with threads that match the tone.

This sewing method is used in areas where the darning will not be visible.

Let's make a stylish cut!

Finally, you should know how to turn an ugly hole in your jeans into a stylish slit. This is usually done with small holes that appear on the front side.

The hole should be slightly enlarged, and its edges should be ruffled. All cross threads must be removed.

To make the resulting pattern look more convincing, it is advisable to make similar slits nearby on the legs. Such “ripped” jeans are extremely popular today and are considered trendy.

True, you need to know a few useful tips to do this job correctly:

  • Jeans must be washed before “restoring” their integrity;
  • If an application is used, it is advisable to check how sensitive it is to heat;
  • When one lacks sewing skills, one can still try to “fix” jeans. Only when working you need to be more careful and carefully follow all the rules of the instructions.

Sometimes it seems like it’s time to throw your jeans in a landfill - they are so damaged by holes and scuffs. However, one should think about whether there is a real opportunity to transform this disadvantage into an advantage or even get rid of it. The above methods will help you achieve this!

Hello, dear craftswomen!

Today I propose to pay attention to jeans. I think that there are a small number of people who don’t have them in their wardrobe. Modern fashion offers us jeans with trim, decorations, lycra, as well as with scuffs and holes in different places. These are the ones I want to talk about today.

I agree, abrasions on denim look beautiful, but when they are small, neat and few in number. As soon as they start to tear further, since the material in these places is weak, they look ugly and cheap.

Apparently, for this reason, clients often come to us whose abrasions begin to spread and tear in different directions. They ask us the same question: “How to fix a hole in jeans? Is it possible to patch it up nicely and close the knee?” Yes, of course you can.

Today, at the request of many readers, I bring to your attention a master class, after which you will be able to mend a tear on your knee, butt, in any place you need. And you can continue to wear your favorite jeans.

How to sew up a hole in jeans. Master class

Our task:

  1. Strengthen the material on the knee
  2. Hide the hole
  3. Patch the torn part

To work we need:

  • interlining;
  • denim;
  • iron;
  • scissors;
  • sewing threads of a suitable color;
  • sewing machine;
  • pins;
  • basting needle.

Work progress:

In front of us is a large hole in the knee, which has already begun to tear down.
Photo 1 - 2.

  • The first thing to do is to strengthen the fabric around it so that during further wear of the product this place does not tear.
    As we did in this case, we rip out the side of the trouser leg.

This is done for convenience during the repair process. If the hole is in the butt area, there is no need to do this, since the approach to it will be convenient through the top of the jeans.

Now, iron the torn area with an iron. We put interlining around it, with the adhesive side to the fabric (photo 3). Using the “pair” function we fix it. Photo 4.

  • Turn the product right side out. From denim material, cut out a rectangle or oval of the required size. If possible, we sew the edges with an overlock or zigzag stitch on a sewing machine. But this is not necessary. Picture 5.

  • I place the prepared patch (using an open seam along the inner seam of the trouser leg), closing the hole and pinning it with pins. Shot 6. I baste in a circle.

  • We select threads suitable for darning, folding them several times and comparing them with the main fabric. Picture 7.

  • We sit down at the sewing machine, thread it with selected threads and sew up the torn part, then we go in a circle.

We use the basic stitch and the machine's forward-backward function. We stitch, taking into account the twill weave of the fabric, which is distinguished by a characteristic rib running diagonally.

Attention! Sew up, stitching in the direction of the hem. Shot 8

  • We take out the basting, iron the patch and sew up the inner seam of the trouser leg, which we used for convenience during darning.

Hooray! Everything is ready!))) Well done! This is what our knee looks like now.))) Picture 9.

Simple Ideas for Decorating Torn Places

If your jeans are decorated with finishing fabric (checks, guipure, brightly colored fabric, leather, knitted details), then you can use this material to cover the fray. Here are examples.

Attention! It is imperative to glue and reinforce the fabric around the torn area with non-woven material.

If the material for the patch is thin, weak, we also glue it with non-woven material and only then hem it. If it is guipure and you want it not to tear, you can put material under it (glue it with non-woven fabric) of the desired color. It can be flesh-colored, colored... We are engaged in Creativity)))

How to make holes in your jeans yourself

By adding Lycra and other additives to denim, the jeans became very fragile. And when it is also decorated with holes and scuffs, it tears even faster.

To know how this happens, I suggest watching how holes are made on jeans in a factory.

These jeans won't last long))))

In my opinion, it is better to make holes yourself where you want. After all, then the rest of the places will be strong)))

Jeans today are an essential item in every person's wardrobe. They have become available to almost everyone. If some jeans become unusable - they become very dirty, torn, you can buy new ones. But it’s not always easy to say goodbye to your favorite thing, especially if it’s expensive and branded.

The area between the legs wears out the fastest. Abrasions, small and large tears appear in this place. There's no need to throw away your favorite jeans right away. You can try to mend them so that they will last for some time.

Tools for work

Their choice depends on whether the product will have to be darned manually or by machine. If you have to sew it up by hand, you need to take a household needle of a suitable size. The packaging with needles indicates their thickness and what material they are intended for. For denim, 11 or 14 works well. In order for the thread to insert well, its size must match the needle. The threads must be strong so that the mended hole does not come apart again after a short time. The size of cotton thread is suitable for sewing 50-80, synthetic - 50-60. It is better to use polyester threads. They stretch well and can withstand heavy loads.

Also useful for work:

  • scissors;
  • pins;
  • unnecessary jeans or a scrap of fabric of the same color.

Hole processing methods

Damage to the tissue between the legs in jeans can be repaired in several ways, depending on its scale. If the tears are small, you can resort to stitching or simply sewing the edges together by hand. For larger holes, internal patching or patching may be used. Stitches can be applied by hand or using a sewing machine.

How to mend by hand

Cut off any loose threads without touching the fabric itself. If the tear is minor, you can mend the jeans without using patches. Insert the thread into the needle and make a tight knot at the end. First, sew the edges of the tears tightly together so that they do not separate further.

Sew the edges around the hole. Start making stitches at a distance of 1 cm from it on all sides. Taper the stitches as you move closer to the edges. Stretch the thread and cut off the excess.

Note! You don't need to sew very close to the edge, otherwise the fabric will fray. For mending, it is better to use buttonhole or overlock stitches.

Plastering

This is a sewing process that involves stitching adjacent stitches. The threads lie in such a way that they reliably hold the product from further abrasion and hide all visual defects of the fabric. The stitches are laid close to each other using a sewing machine.

Plastering is one of the best methods for getting rid of tears, but it is also quite painstaking. You need to choose a fabric that matches the color and structure of the jeans and apply it from the inside out. The machine must have a reverse function. The first stitch is made in the forward direction, the second in the opposite direction. The stitch should not only go along the patch, but also extend beyond it by 1-2 cm.

If the machine does not have a reverse function, you just need to unroll the product after each stitch and sew straight. At the end of the procedure, trim the fringe on the front side and steam the darned area with an iron.

Applying a patch

If your jeans are severely torn between your legs, you won’t be able to do without applying a patch. Choose fabric of the same color and texture with ripped jeans. It should be a couple of centimeters larger than the hole. The threads also need to be matched tone to tone.

Trim the frayed areas with scissors. Give the patch the desired shape. Secure it to your jeans with pins so that it does not move. Insert a thread of a contrasting color with the patch into a needle and make a knot at the end. Baste the patch with a basting stitch. You need to pull out the pins. Only after this, sew the patch with matching threads.

By typewriter

It is very easy to sew up tears between the legs of your favorite pants using a special machine darning.

You will need:

  • sewing machine;
  • threads matching the color;
  • scissors;
  • non-woven fabric or a suitable piece of fabric.

You need to turn the pants inside out, put on a piece of non-woven fabric (fabric) that fits the size, and iron the top. Then sew up the worn area with even parallel seams using a reverse stitch. The sutures must be placed as close as possible to the damaged area. A correctly applied patch remains invisible.

A hole between your legs in jeans is not a death sentence. If it’s a shame to throw something away, you can revive it and mend it. In some cases, this is painstaking and time-consuming work. But by following the recommendations listed above, you can get rid of the hole so that no one will guess about its presence in the past.

How to mend a hole in jeans between the legs so that it is not visible? Master class in the next video.

Sometimes you really don’t want to part with your favorite beautiful original jeans, despite the holes in the knees and scuffs between the legs. There are some clothes in which you feel very comfortable and comfortable, despite its age. And jeans, whether men's or women's, are just such clothing.
But how to sew holes in jeans or repair worn areas? Repairing jeans in a studio will cost more than buying new ones. Putting patches - where can I get denim fabric for patches? Darn a hole - how to darn?
We’ll try to answer all these questions about how to fix holes and repair your old jeans with your own hands.

1. Save the offcuts from your jeans when you shorten them.

Put patches on jeans in worn places or holes - not the best and most original solution. But, nevertheless, this method of repairing jeans is sometimes suitable, especially for children's clothes. The patch can be made into a shape, for example, in the shape of a cat’s face, by zigzag-ing the edges and sewing on long mustaches, and sewing a couple of buttons instead of eyes. This or that decision depends on your imagination and the area where the jeans will be repaired. Sometimes patches can be placed on both men's and women's jeans in the form of a decorative pocket or symmetrical stripes on both legs. But where can I get pieces of denim of exactly the same color and quality? Unfortunately, there is only one way to solve this problem - when shortening jeans in a studio or with your own hands, always save the trimmings, even small ones. They can still help you out when your jeans need repairs. But if there are no scraps, but there are holes, you can and should use another method.

2. Instead of a patch, darn the torn areas

Actually, the term darning is not entirely accurate in this case. Plastering will be more accurate, although darning, the so-called artistic darning, is also used when repairing jeans. But we won’t consider it for now and will focus on the gizmo.
The most difficult area to repair jeans is the knees. Holes and abrasions occur here most often from wear and tear of the fabric and it is quite difficult to restore them. If these are children's jeans, then you can make all sorts of overlays or appliqués, but for men's jeans, for example, "seals" with buttons instead of eyes are no longer suitable. There is only one way - a gizmo.
First, select threads that exactly match the tone of the denim of the torn area, preferably even several shades, since in the store you are unlikely to be able to accurately guess their color. When you start to apply the thread in long lines, tightly to each other, then you will definitely find out that they are either darker or lighter.
Torn areas must first be glued on the back of the jeans with adhesive material. It will fix and connect the gap into one whole. However, it is still too early to darn. Place a small patch of fabric on top of the adhesive fabric on the torn area on the back of the jeans, preferably the same color as the jeans. Its size should be slightly larger than the torn area. To prevent it from moving, baste its edges, but it is better to glue this patch with the same adhesive, also placing it on top of the patch, since the basting threads will be difficult to remove from the darning.

3. How to properly sew jeans

In order to complete darning jeans using the stitching method, it is not necessary to have any special sewing machine. Almost any sewing machine will do this, although some have this type of stitching where the stitches go forward and then back automatically without using the reverse lever. If your machine has such a stitch, then good. If not, switch the machine to a simple straight stitch, set the average stitch length and, having outlined the section of the piece with chalk, begin stitching the marked section of the jeans with a stitch from edge to edge. When the stitch reaches the edge of the area in one direction, press the reverse lever, and slightly moving the fabric, sew the stitch in the opposite direction. There is no need to unfold the jeans; reverse stitching only needs to be done using the reverse lever. The sewing machine must be electric, since both hands will be constantly busy.

4. Shtukova is usually performed in two stages

Plastering is usually performed in two stages. On the first one you make transverse stitches, and on the second longitudinal stitches. And not just longitudinally, but preferably in the direction of the weave of the denim, that is, at an angle, so that the lines are like a continuation of them. And if the threads match exactly the tone of the jeans, then after ironing they will practically not be visible. By the way, the lower threads must be the same color as the upper ones, and before repairing jeans in this way, adjust the thread tension. The top thread can even be loosened slightly. The stitches should lie close to each other to completely cover the untapped areas jeans patches the first transverse layer of thread. And speaking of threads, the more elastic they are, the better quality this kind of patch on jeans turns out to be. The optimal thread thickness is 35, but sometimes it is possible to be a little thicker - 45. But not thicker, otherwise you will not have a patch on your jeans, but a “growth” of unknown origin.

5. Patches on jeans between legs

And finally, the most difficult case - how to fix frayed jeans between the legs. It is really very difficult to restore the worn spots on jeans between the legs. Firstly, you will need a sewing machine capable of sewing thick denim seams, since this “knot” will have to be disassembled and not darned as shown in the photo, but patched. Of course, you can fill it up, just like holes in knees or pockets, but not always. Often there is simply nothing to darn - just holes, which can only be restored by putting patches on the jeans in a given place. This is when the leftovers from shortening your jeans would come in handy. And it’s okay that they have traces of “cooking” and finishing seams. In this section of the jeans they will not be particularly visible, but the patches will be of the same tone and quality as the jeans themselves.
First, disassemble the connecting seams in this area. Iron properly, straightening the seams. Mark with chalk a straight line of areas that need to be cut off and replaced with new ones. The patches on both jeans legs should be symmetrical. Before cutting, make sure you have enough pieces of fabric for the patches, especially since they will have a double allowance at the junction.
Stitch patches on jeans using a regular connecting seam, finish it with an overlock or zigzag stitch. And you can even make a finishing stitch, using the same threads as on jeans, for strength.
That's all, now assemble the jeans, make finishing stitches and you can wear them for several more years.

Jeans are a part of the wardrobe that has firmly entered modern life and lives beyond fashion. This stylish and durable type of clothing is practical and comfortable.

How to sew up a hole in jeans? There is no reason to throw away your jeans, even if a rip suddenly appears. Let's figure out how to give jeans a new life.

How to mend on a typewriter

You need a piece of fabric the size of a hole, a square of interlining of the same size, threads that differ in color, or tone on tone.

Using a machine, we make stitches in one direction, then in the opposite direction, and so on across the width of the hole. In place of the gap, it looks like a thick piece of threaded fabric appears. The contrast will add originality to the sewn area.

Manually

If you apply patches by hand, use plain threads. Patch the hole in such a way that the edges appear torn. The work is delicate, place small stitches close to each other, imitating the connection of denim threads. Indistinguishable from machine work.

Choosing needles and threads to sew up a hole in jeans

The machine will require standard household coils. Get advice from the store where you will buy. And for hand darning we take a thicker household version. You can find out which thread size is suitable in the instructions on the needle packaging. Seamstresses recommend using 11 (75) and 14 (90) for jeans. Holes between the legs require increased tightening, which means it is better to choose the appropriate numbers of cotton and synthetic bobbins.

Patch or applique

Sewing stores have a huge selection of appliques. It's fashionable and original. The applique sometimes even “fits the theme” hides the hole. Only seamstresses recommend not only gluing the picture according to the instructions, but also stitching it for strength.

Damage to denim can be corrected using any type of material. Leather inserts, braid, decorative elements, and pockets look original. Even lace never goes out of fashion.

Hole on the butt

You can fix the problem using a typewriter or manually. To hide the hole that appears, take a patch - a piece of the same denim fabric. We sew from the inside out. Place a piece on the tear, press it with adhesive cloth on top and then a layer of denim on top to iron it. Iron until the layered area turns into a single piece. Sew on the front side using a wide, large zigzag. Tie knots on the reverse side and trim off the excess piece.

Hole in the knee

How to sew up a hole in jeans near the knee? To make it more comfortable to sew in a visible place, we rip the jeans along the side seams. Iron the adhesive fabric over the hole. You can stitch using the “stitching” method on a machine. When we restore the semblance of wear, we select threads according to shades. It’s even easier to hide a hole on children’s jeans: sew and decorate a patch.

How to sew a hole in jeans between the legs

There are usually two problems: jeans that are frayed between the legs or a seam that has come apart. Both put a person in an awkward position, so it is advisable to correct it with jewelry. Choose a thick thread. Using your hands, make horizontal stitches over the hole, first down, then back. When the horizontal hole is filled with stitches, we begin to move vertically over it, inserting the needle between the sewn threads. It’s as if we are weaving new fabric in place of the lost one.

Jeans repair: how to restore the hem

In the same way, it is not difficult to remove a torn hem or a hole in the knee. We rip out the damaged area, smooth it out and apply dublerin in several layers. Choose threads in color. A hoop is needed to secure the darning area. Turned inside out, sew them with a stitch in the forward and reverse directions close to each other. This creates a dense area in place of the hole. And we finish the work by folding it along a new line: tucking it, stitching it, removing the shaggy places.

How to remove a hole in a pocket

We will mend the holes in the corners of the pockets. First, we’ll push the lining to the corner. From the inside we glue a piece of fabric onto the glue web. We darn in a familiar way. While the pocket is protruding, the lines can still be barely discerned by the eye. When we sew along the same line, the darned area will be completely hidden. If the hole is small, cover it with applique or do embroidery. You will need:

  • A scrap of fabric or lining, maybe jeans
  • Glue web
  • Threads of identical shade
  • Safety pins for pinning
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Patch

The patch is made from scraps of fabric, or the jeans themselves when shortened. It is cut out a little wider and longer than the size of the hole, so that there is something to grab with a needle. First baste by hand, then machine along the seam.

How to sew up a hole in jeans without a patch

This is the most unusual and creative way to give your favorite item new life. Fantasize, because there are no rules in this method. Today the stores are full of all kinds of creative items:

Materials

  • Lace
  • Beads
  • Rhinestones
  • Thermal drawing
  • Acrylic paints
  • Application
  • Embroidery threads

Instructions

You can place rhinestones and beads around the hole in such a way as if it was intended at the factory. Today, scuffs and holes are in fashion, and the way to decorate them is a matter of imagination. Lace inserts or frills, self-adhesive pictures, buttons will make the item brighter and more feminine. The rhinestones are glued on with an iron, the beads are simply sewn on. A completely new way is to paint with acrylic on a stencil. The kits are sold in stores.

If you are a jack of all trades, come up with your own embroidery: a pattern in which the hole is simply not visible or is skillfully woven into the design.

Jeans can be easily turned into shorts

We determine the length of the future shorts, leave another 5-7 centimeters of fabric for hemming by eye and cut it off. Of course, it would be more accurate to put it on, draw a line and cut along it. Shorts can be flat, with an upward slope at the hips. It depends on the drawn pattern that you will work with scissors on.

Classic - shorts 12 centimeters above the knee

Beach shorts look stylish with guipure or frayed edges. It is better to make it from narrow, figure-fitting pants.

Bermudas are called knee-length pants. To shorten it, it is preferable to take wide jeans, or cut it into capri pants, which is also fashionable.

Even not entirely clear, measured and cut lines can be corrected by decorating them with decorative elements.
