How to stretch jeans in the waistband. How to stretch jeans in width and length at home: effective methods and useful tips

If the jeans are very small and not only do not fasten, but do not even fit on the hips, you can try embroidering them on the sides.

These jeans are flares. You need to make the trouser legs straight. You can use trousers that fit perfectly as a basis. We apply the “pattern pants” to the jeans to be altered, combining them together along the middle seam. Tapered trousers, internal seams We do not combine, but arrange as in the photo.

Draw a line from the side seam, making a seam allowance. Let's cut it off.

We fold the jeans with the cut leg on top of the second one, cutting off the excess fabric on the second one.

There will be inserts on the sides of the jeans. We cut the side seams, together with the belt, or unpick the seams.

You can rip off the belt and make an insert into it: rectangles on the sides, or cut the belt in the middle and sew one strip. If the fit of the trousers/jeans is also low, then the belt will have to be completely changed, making its width larger, and also adding length based on the old belt. The fabric is the same as for the inserts on the sides.

We make a cut at the bottom to the maximum point where the jeans pull on your leg and don’t fit.

Sew up the side seams on the trouser legs. We process the edges with a zigzag.

On the front side we sew a line along the side seams. You can make two parallel lines.

We process the edges of the cut from the waistband to the beginning of the side seams of the trousers with a zigzag stitch.

Then we turn it inside out about half a centimeter and sew it with a straight stitch along the front side.

Now we need to make the insert pattern. This is perhaps the most difficult thing to make a pattern the right size and shapes. How to do this? Here's an option:

You could just make triangular inserts. But, if you want jeans to fit exactly to your figure, tight-fitting, a triangle will not work here.

We put on jeans. We insert a thick thread into the needle and use these stitches to sew the edges of one side, pulling as much as possible so that the jeans fit as they should. We see a fragment of the insert that we need. Using a pen, we trace along the edges directly along our body. We take off our jeans. We put polyethylene on the leg and trace it precisely. Or immediately place a piece of polyethylene under your jeans and straighten it, then circle it. The polyethylene should be dense, not a bag. We get the pattern. Don’t forget to immediately sign on the pattern which side goes to the front and which to the back, so you don’t get confused later and sew incorrectly.

We cut out and place the pattern on the fabric from which we will make the insert. This is thick stretch fabric brown, since the trim on the jeans is made with brown threads. We also sew with brown threads. We make an allowance only on the top (on the sides it is not necessary, since the fabric stretches; if you do not have stretch, make a seam allowance of 1-1.5 cm) of a few centimeters (a margin just in case). Cut out 2 such pieces by folding the fabric face to face in half.

We process the inserts along the edges with a zigzag, except for their top.

We sew the insert like this: we put it under the seams of the sides of the jeans and sew a line. Moreover, we align the seam of the jeans along the curves of the insert, placing the jeans 1-1.5 from the edges of the insert. Of course, first you need to baste the insert and measure whether the insert “fits” correctly. It may turn out that it is better to lower it a little down, so that the “tail” of the insert remains at the bottom on the wrong side. We sew on the jeans from the front side. We lay 2 lines at a time. Then we also lay two parallel lines on the front side, sewing on the “tail” of the inserts.

At the top we trim off the excess fabric on the inserts. We need to put on jeans and draw a line, how much excess we need to remove and which line to cut along. The back of the jeans should blend smoothly with the insert into the front.

Now you need to process the top of the inserts at the waistband. We place a piece of fabric as in the photo from the wrong side onto the insert and trace the outline of the insert from the top to the waist line of the jeans, making a hem allowance at the bottom.

Cut out two parts.

We process the sides of the parts with a zigzag, tuck the bottom and hem it. Place the piece face to face on the jeans. We stitch along the top as close to the edge as possible, especially on the sides.

We turn the part inside out. We lay a stitch along the top from the face close to the edge.

Sew the side edges of the part from the inside out. Place a stitch at the bottom so that it runs straight, matching the waistline on the front and back of the jeans.

It will be more accurate if: on the top of the insert, draw a line that combines the back and front of the belt, retreat 1-1.5 cm from it and cut it off. On the wrong side, place polyethylene on the insert and trace the insert along the edges of the top and sides. Draw a line from the bottom that combines the parts of the belt, immediately make an allowance for the hem and cut it out. Using this pattern, cut out 2 pieces, without allowances. Zigzag the sides.

Place the piece, face down, on top of the insert on the front side. Sew on top. The line goes along the top line, combining parts of the belt. Turn it inside out, straighten this top seam, and iron it. You can stitch close to the edge. We baste the insert on the sides, tucking the bottom. We attach it.

Denim fabric is the most susceptible to shrinkage and stretching. It happens that the trousers you buy are too short or tight in the hips and waist. How to stretch jeans? How to properly care for denim trousers? Methods for stretching jeans and recommendations for caring for them are given below.

How to stretch jeans?

How to stretch jeans at home

Weight gain, trousers shrinking after washing, purchasing short pants - all this pushes people to stretch their jeans. To increase their length and size, use:

· waist stretcher;

· fabric conditioner;

· iron or steamer.

Dissolve a cap of conditioner in cold water, then wash the jeans in the resulting mixture. In this case, you need to constantly stretch your trousers in problem areas. The washed item is spread on a towel and left to dry.

With the help of a waist stretcher, the process of increasing your jeans size is faster. Before using the stretcher, the fabric must be thoroughly wetted.

The device is inserted into the belt, the fly and button are fastened, and then the trousers are smoothly stretched to the desired size. Once the limit is reached, the jeans are hung on a line or drying rack and left to dry completely.

How to stretch jeans to size? To stretch the item comprehensively, you can use the bath. Warm water is poured into it and a little conditioner or bath foam is added. Then you need to put on jeans and sit in the water. The pants should be completely wet.

When the fabric is saturated with moisture, it can be stretched. First, the fabric is stretched in the area of the waist and hips, then, if necessary, the trousers are stretched in length.

At the end of the procedure, the water is drained, but the jeans remain on the body. When the water has drained a little from your pants, you need to get out of the bath and do exercises, avoiding tension in the fabric in the knee area. Then the jeans are removed and dried in the fresh air.

Using a steamer or an iron with a steam generator, the jeans are stretched by 2-3 centimeters in volume. To do this, the waist and hip areas are treated with hot steam and simultaneously stretched with your hands. After partial cooling, the jeans are put on and worn without taking them off throughout the day.

Jeans are present in almost every person's wardrobe. This is a practical, wear-resistant element of everyday clothing, without which it is difficult to imagine your life. Sometimes it happens that the next time you put on trousers, it turns out that they have become too small.

There are several ways to stretch your jeans yourself. Moreover, this can be done both in width (at the waist, hips, calves) and in length. All these methods are available to everyone and do not require financial investment. But if none of the techniques helps to cope with the problem, you can resort to more radical measures - altering your jeans.

Jeans shrinkage areas

The reasons that denim trousers have become too small may be:

  • weight gain;
  • incorrect washing.

The product can sit in different places. If the fabric consists of a large amount of synthetics rather than cotton, then it can shrink completely, as well as only in width or length. Higher quality jeans tend to shrink in specific areas. Most often this is the belt area. Once your jeans are washed, they can be difficult to button. Skinny jeans with stretch may shrink in the legs. Therefore, when purchasing, you need to take into account that after washing they may become short.

Effective ways to stretch your jeans

To increase the volume or length of a product, you can resort to several proven methods. Thanks to the density and elasticity of denim, this will not be difficult.

Re-stitching

If the listed methods for stretching jeans are powerless, you need to resort to more radical measures. If you have even the slightest skill with a sewing machine, you can reduce the seam allowances. This method is effective if the trousers are only slightly small (1-1.5 cm). Turn the product inside out. Use a steamer to remove side seams where the jeans are too small. It may be necessary to rip them apart along their entire length. Use thread to mark the location of the new seams, then sew them with a machine.

If the trousers need to be made much larger, you can resort to inserting stripes at the side seams. The main thing is that the fabric is suitable in density with jeans, and harmonizes in color. You need to measure your waist and hips. Leave 2 cm of margin to the required width of the stripes. Cut 2 strips of fabric of the required length and width and sew into the side seams.

How to prevent jeans shrinkage

So as not to have to resort to different methods When stretching trousers, you need to follow several recommendations that will help avoid shrinkage.

Adviсe:

  • When purchasing, pay attention to the quality of the product and the composition of the fabric. Good fabric does not deform when washed or worn.
  • Read the label carefully and study before putting your jeans in the wash. If machine washing is prohibited, then you need to wash the item by hand.
  • Wash denim possible in warm water 30-40oC.
  • Do not use aggressive detergents or those containing bleach.
  • Do not dry the product in washing machine. It is better to hang it carefully by the belt so that the pants dry naturally.

Jeans often shrink after washing or may simply end up too small due to changes in body weight. This situation can be changed and products can be stretched using simple, accessible methods. And to avoid unwanted shrinkage, you need to learn how to properly wash and dry clothes.

Don’t despair, you need to quickly take action and look for all sorts of ways to make jeans a size larger.

How to stretch jeans to the desired size and length?

Denim items are quite elastic and durable, so stretching them is not that difficult. Several proven methods should be used:

  • Spraying. To carry out the procedure, we find the problem area on the pants. Often this is the area of the buttocks and thighs. We fill a bottle with a spray bottle with some warm water and treat the uncomfortable areas of the jeans. After the trousers are dry, we try them on and rejoice because the method worked.
  • We stretch the pants along the length - this method is used after washing, when the pants have shrunk a little in size. You need to take both pant legs from the wrong side along the seam and pull down. The process takes about 10 minutes.
  • An expanding device is a very rare method, but it does exist. This is a special device that is fixed in the belt of your pants. After this, the device slowly expands, thereby enlarging your denim pants.

How to stretch jeans length and width?

If the jeans are short in length, you need to use one effective old method- stretching using water procedures. To do this you will need:

  1. Put on your pants.
  2. Run a bath with warm water.
  3. Lie in the bath for 10-15 minutes.

While you are lying in warm water, you can speed up the process of expanding your trousers by stretching them at the seams. To enhance the effect, you can add shower gel or bath foam to the water. You need to use this method if you can still fit into jeans.

We provide additional length to jeans

In addition to using water procedures, there are three more good ways for lengthening jeans:

  1. You can throw your pants over the horizontal bar, tie them up and hang on them a little. This method is effective, but you need to be very careful not to fall. The process time is not limited - you can hang as long as you like. For example, until your hands start to hurt.
  2. Turn your pants inside out. Step on the bottom of your pant legs and slowly pull them up. You should not make very sudden movements, because you can very easily tear your pants.
  3. If you don't want to hang from the horizontal bar, you can sew an extra piece of material onto your jeans. To do this, you will need to find fabric that is the same color as your pants. By using sewing machine additional material needs to be sewn on.

Important! This method is very simple and, perhaps, one of the most effective. The only downside is that it is quite difficult to find fabric that matches the trousers.

These methods are a lifeline for those whose favorite jeans are too short.

When jeans are too small in the waistband, you immediately feel the urge to put them on the back burner and pull them out when you take off a pair extra pounds. This problem can be solved not only by putting it in the back of the closet, but also by one effective method.

You will need:

  • A scrap of denim.
  • Sharp scissors.
  • Needle and thread.

Let's get started:

  1. Turn the denim pants inside out.
  2. Afterwards, we make an incision in the middle of the belt at the back. The cut should be triangular for convenience.
  3. Next, take a piece of denim fabric and firmly sew it to the pants.

This way you will space out your jeans by a few centimeters in your waistband and won’t have to put them off until you lose weight.

How else to widen the waistband of jeans at home?

It is not at all difficult to expand a denim product yourself at home if you use information from Internet resources. Let's look at a few simple methods:

  • We sew wedges on the sides of the product. First, take measurements and calculate how many centimeters of material you will need. It is advisable to choose the material for the wedges from stretch fabric that stretches well.
  • We make a higher landing. You can use any type of fabric, the main thing is that it is durable and matches the jeans. We take measurements and determine how high you want the landing to be. We sew the selected piece of material to the belt of our product using a sewing machine.

No matter which method you use, the result will be the same, and you will say goodbye to this problem forever.

How to stretch jeans at home?

There are several commonly used and effective ways to stretch jeans. Let's look at the most basic options.

  • We act without improvised means - this means physical exercises, for example, stretching, lunges, bending. You should put on denim pants and start exercising as intensely as possible. The longer you practice, the more effective the result. In addition, you will kill two birds with one stone - you will ensure good mood and shape, and also stretch your favorite pants.
  • Heavy artillery comes into play - meaning the use special means. You can use the expander mentioned above. It is also worth considering that on store shelves you can now find special sprays that expand fabric fibers. They are no less effective than an expander.
  • An iron will help restore your jeans to their original appearance. Usually it is used immediately after washing, as things shrink in size. It is necessary to spray the panties with water using a spray bottle and iron them. You can also apply steam treatment using an iron.
  • A spacer and water will always help your jeans expand. In order to increase the size of pants, they use the soaking method, as it is one of the most reliable. But when water is unable to help, they use the method of spreading and sewing in additional fabric. That is, using a seam ripper, carefully remove the seams on the legs and sew strips of fabric to them. Afterwards, everything is sewn back on using a sewing machine.

It happens that your favorite jeans suddenly stop fitting at the waist. You shouldn’t immediately throw them on the far shelf. After all, choosing a model that always “fits” your figure perfectly is a rather difficult task, and at times completely unrealistic.

How to stretch jeans? There are several proven ways to increase your trouser size by 1-2 sizes.

Many people face the problem of pants that are too tight. Manufacturers met customers halfway and released a device called “Waistband extender”. This device is sold mainly in online stores. Outwardly it looks like a barbell with threads and tucks. By rotating the device along the thread, you can increase its length.

Directions for use:

  • We fasten the jeans with all the fasteners;
  • moisten the stretched area with water;
  • insert the device and rotate it along the thread until we achieve the required length;
  • fix the device in the desired position;
  • Leave the trousers until completely dry.

Advantages of the method:

  • convenience, no need to endure discomfort;
  • efficiency.

Cons:

  • the need to buy a device;
  • the result lasts only until the first wash, the denim shrinks and after washing the procedure will need to be repeated.

"Water aerobics"

How to stretch jeans at home if there are no tools? We offer an old method of stretching jeans, it came to us from the fashionistas of the 80s. Back then people didn’t have much choice, so they had to wear what they could buy. But even now it can be used.

Procedure:

  • we pull on our jeans, try to fasten the belt, pulling in our stomach;
  • fill the bath with water, preferably warm, so as not to freeze;
  • add a little bath foam or shower gel, you don’t need to pour a lot, a few drops are enough. Soap products soften denim fabric well, and it will stretch better;
  • we sit in the bath and wait until the trousers are completely wet;
  • We begin to carefully stretch the fabric with our hands so that the jeans are tight;
  • then drain the water, continuing to stay in the bath and stretch the jeans;
  • when the water from your trousers stops trickling, we leave the bathroom and begin to do squats, lunges and leg swings. You need to actively move so that the tissue stretches;
  • wait until the pants are almost dry;
  • take off your trousers and air dry them.

Advantages of the method:

  • does not require costs;
  • The trousers don't just stretch, they fit exactly to your figure.

Cons:

  • if the room is cool, then wearing wet pants can cause a cold;
  • takes time, you will need to wait until the trousers are almost dry on the body.

Manual stretching

If you don’t want to take a bath in jeans and then do exercises in wet pants, then you should use this home method.

Procedure:

  • measure the jeans where they are narrow;
  • fill a spray bottle with warm water and a couple of drops of shower gel;
  • We spray well the part that we will stretch;
  • We start stretching by hand. If you need to stretch the item at the hips, then step on one side pocket with your foot and gently pull the jeans in the opposite direction;
  • We periodically measure the stretchable part. If you managed to achieve the desired result, leave the jeans to dry.

Pros:

  • the method is simple and convenient, you don’t have to endure discomfort;
  • You can stretch your jeans both in width and in length.

Cons:

  • You should not try to stretch worn or heavily torn jeans in this way, there is a high risk of simply tearing the product;
  • there is a risk of warping the product, that is, stretching it unevenly;
  • It is inconvenient to act alone; it is better to do the stretching with the help of another person.

Ironing

This is a thermal method. To achieve stretching on the fabric, we will apply hot steam. This requires an iron with a steamer.

Procedure:

  • fill the iron reservoir with water;
  • includes maximum temperature;
  • iron the item several times, turning on the steam;
  • at the same time we try to stretch the fabric with our hands;
  • immediately after treatment, put on jeans and walk in them until they cool and dry completely;
  • To increase the effectiveness of the method, you need to not just walk in jeans, but perform various movements - sit down, do leg swings, lunges, etc.

Pros:

  • The method is effective, you can stretch the item in width by 3-4 cm;
  • You don’t have to endure any particular discomfort, since you need to put on barely damp, not wet, jeans.

Cons:

  • It is difficult to cope with the work alone, someone must help: one person irons, the second stretches;
  • you need to be as careful as possible so as not to get burned.

Advice! The ironing method is only suitable for stretching 100% cotton jeans. If the composition contains elastic fibers (spidex, lavsan, etc.), then when exposed to temperature, the jeans will deform, which will make them unsuitable for wear.

Stretch in length

It is relatively easy to stretch skinny jeans at the waist or hips, but what if the trousers shrink after washing and become short?

You can try to stretch out the pant legs using the spray and stretch method. To do this you need:

  • fasten the trousers by the belt to some stable object;
  • spray the fabric from the knee and below with warm water to which a couple of drops of shower gel have been added;
  • stretch the trouser legs to the required length and fix them in this position until completely dry.

Advantages of the method:

  • simplicity;
  • no costs.

Cons:

  • requires significant physical effort;
  • There is a high risk of damaging the item - tearing off the belt loops or simply tearing the fabric, especially if the jeans have artificial abrasions.

Applying tailoring skills

For those who know how to sew, there will be no problem; they can easily arrange the jeans in the waistband or extend them along the length. But what should someone who is not very dexterous with a needle do? You can arrange your jeans in the waistband using a button and an elastic band.

Procedure:

  • take a large, strong button with a “leg”;
  • sew it on the side of the belt on which the loop is located;
  • put on trousers;
  • We put an elastic band on two buttons (sewn by us and on the jeans). The result is a “new fastener” that increases the width of the belt by 1-2 cm.

Advantages of the method:

  • simplicity;
  • By adjusting the length of the elastic, you can achieve the desired width of the belt.

Cons:

  • Jeans cannot be worn with a short top, otherwise our “life hack” will become visible to everyone. You need to wear a long T-shirt or sweater.

Despite the fact that it is relatively easy to stretch jeans, many people make mistakes that lead to complete damage to the item. Therefore, you need to know the precautions.

  • There is a stretch limit. If your jeans are so small that they don't fit on your hips, you'll have to buy new thing or lose weight. You can stretch denim by 3-4 cm, no more.
  • Pay attention to the belt loops. The strips of fabric that hold the belt are a very vulnerable spot. If you pull on them too hard, you can tear out the belt loops along with a piece of fabric.
  • Coloring. Many jeans, even very good quality, easy to paint. Therefore, they can stain the surfaces on which you will place them to stretch.
  • Care. Jeans often shrink after washing. Therefore, wash them on a special program in the machine. If there is no such program, then make sure that the washing temperature is no more than 40 degrees and that hot drying is not used.
