The maximum number of children born to one woman. How many children were there in the largest family?

The historical record belongs to the Russian Vasiliev family, who lived in the 18th century. The wife of Fyodor Vasiliev, Shuisky, gave birth to 69 during her life. The woman is still the record holder for childbearing and is listed in the Guinness Book.

For more than 200 years, no one in the world has been able to repeat or beat this record. The advantage of the peasant woman was her genetics, which made it possible to produce children in 27 births. Vasilyeva gave birth to twins 16 times (another world record), triplets and four quadruplets were born seven times. Unfortunately, only 67 children survived to conscious age.

It is worth noting that this record is not the final point for Fedor Vasiliev himself. The peasant was married twice. In his first marriage, he gave birth to 20 more children. As a result, there were 87 children in the large family. This fact was appreciated even by Catherine the Great, and information about such a large offspring was included in the book “Additions to the Acts of Emperor Peter the Great.”

Historians are still arguing about the order of birth of the children of the peasant Vasilyev. However, facts gleaned from house books and issues of the Vedomosti newspaper indicate the excessive fertility of the second wife.

The largest families of our time

If the record of the peasant Vasilyeva to this day has not been broken by a single woman, Fyodor Vasilyev himself was ahead of the modern Indian Zion Chan (Zion Khan) with a noticeable advantage. The polygamist will give birth to 94 children.

The Indian man was able to conceive so many children thanks to his wives - Zion Chan has 39 of them. The huge family lives in a common multi-storey building. The wives of the sons and grandchildren of the hero father also live in it. According to the most conservative estimates, about 180 people live in the house.

According to the father of the family, they begin to prepare for dinner in their house before breakfast. As a rule, wives take part in cooking. To feed so many people, more than a dozen chickens and several carts of vegetables are spent on one meal.

In those countries where polygamy is prohibited, the records are “modest”. The closest person to Vasiliev's record was a resident of Chile, Leontina Albina. She managed to give birth to 55 children and was also included in the Book of Records.

Modern Russia has its own heroes of childbirth. Today they are Elena and Alexander Shishkin. The Pentecostal family (a branch of Christianity where abortion is strictly prohibited) gave birth to 20 children. Nineteen of them still live with their parents, and the eldest son already has his own family and three children.

Active supporters of Christianity, Americans Bob and Michelle Duggar did not think about having a large family. Initially, their plans were to give life to two or three children. However, after the birth of her first baby and subsequent contraception, the woman suffered a miscarriage, which almost cost her life. After this, the husband and wife decided not to interfere with “God’s plans” and surrendered to the will of fate. As a result, they became one of the largest families in America, giving birth to and raising 19 children. There could have been more babies, but three of Michelle's births ended in the death of the babies.

The birth of one baby is a classic of the nature genre regarding the Crown of Creation, man. However, “thanks to” our intervention in nature and the development of artificial insemination technology, multiple pregnancies are no longer uncommon.

Twins and triplets are no longer a special feature. Women give birth to five, eight and even 11 children at once. We invite you to look at these courageous mothers, who at one time created a large, large family for themselves.

Identical 14-year-old twins were born as a quartet: Megan, Sarah, Kendra and Callie Durst became famous at the age of 6, and are now starring in a reality show about their lives.
According to data for 2005, 15 identical quadruplets were born in the world, 10 of them were sisters, but there are many more non-identical quadruplets. According to statistics, one quadruplet occurs in 700 thousand pregnancies.

The most famous, first and only case of the birth of five identical twins is the Canadian Dionne family. The girls were born in 1934 and for many years were a landmark of the province of Ontario, and according to the twins themselves, their fate was not an enviable one.

In 2013, quintuplets were born in Salt Lake City - 3 girls and 2 boys. It is noteworthy that the pregnancy occurred naturally.

Last year, 2016, 37-year-old Odessa resident Oksana Kobeletskaya gave birth to quintuplets, although the couple were expecting twins.

Nkem Chukwu from Texas gave birth to eight babies in December 1998. Moreover, on December 8 she gave birth to a girl, and on the 20th she gave birth to 5 more girls and two boys (one of the babies died shortly after giving birth).

In 2009, 33-year-old Nadi Suliman gave birth to eight twins - two girls and six boys. All children are alive and well, and this is the only case of octuplets where all survived.

Nineteens were born in 1971, 1972, 1976, 1977, 1979 and 1999, but, unfortunately, none of these 54 children survived

Ten children - until today was considered the largest number of children born from one pregnancy. In 1946, 8 girls and 2 boys were born in Brazil; there are also known cases of the birth of such a number of children in China in 1936 and in Spain in 1924. There is no information about whether the children survived.

42-year-old resident of the Indian city of Riley Maria Fernandez naturally gave birth to 11 children in 37 minutes. All are completely healthy boys, six of whom are identical twins. This phenomenon is included in the Guinness Book of Records. Thus, today 11 children born from one pregnancy are an absolute record.

On July 18, 1994, 63-year-old Italian Rosanna Dala Corta gave birth to a child and set an age record that stood until 2005. After that he was beaten more than once. Life presents surprises every day, and those that relate to the mystery of the birth of a new person most often cause delight or bewilderment. Here are 10 of the most incredible records in the history of childbirth.

* Oldest mother: Italian Rosanna Dala Corta's record was broken in 2005 by 66-year-old Adriana Iliescu from Romania, and in 2008 by 70-year-old Omkari Panwar from India, who gave birth to twins (the children's father was 77 at the time). The babies were born weighing a little more than a kilogram, but healthy.

*Youngest mother:

By the age of four, her mammary glands were sufficiently developed, and at the age of 5, a characteristic expansion of the pelvic bones was already noted. Her son weighed 2.7 kg. She gave birth to her second child 33 years later.

* Record for speed of childbirth: Englishwoman Palak Weiss gave birth to a daughter weighing 3.5 kg in 2 minutes. This birth was considered the fastest.

10 most incredible records related to the birth of children

The waters broke, and after just one push, a healthy girl was born, who was named Vedika. And the Weiss family's first child, a boy, was born in just an hour.

*Smallest surviving newborn: in December 1961, a baby weighing 283.5 g and height 30.4 cm was born in England. The girl was born 6 weeks prematurely. Surprisingly, the birth took place without the intervention of medical personnel.

* Largest number of children: A resident of Russia gave birth to 69 children to her husband. She gave birth to twins 16 times, triplets 7 times, and quadruplets 4 times.

* Largest number of births: Briton Elizabeth Greenhill gave birth 38 times - she had 32 daughters and 7 sons.

Descendant of Fyodor Vasiliev discovered in Vvedenye

The MS correspondent gained access to documents that shed light on the family secrets of Shuyanin, the father of 86 children, a Guinness Book record holder.

Let us remind our readers that the peasant of Shuisky district Fyodor Vasiliev, who in 2010 was nominated by the editors of MS as a candidate for the title “Name of Shuya,” became famous for being the father of 86 children. For comparison: Sultan of Morocco Moulay Ismail, who lived in the 18th century, had 700 sons and 342 daughters. Only he had not two wives, like the Shuya record holder, but a whole harem. That is why the name of Fyodor Vasiliev was officially included in the Guinness Book of Records, and it is unlikely that anyone in the world will be able to move the man from Shuisky district from this pedestal. Our newspaper dedicated many publications to Fyodor Vasiliev, proving that this man is worthy of installing at least some kind of memorial sign in his small homeland. However, we admit, we were confused by the fact that in the history of the Shuya record holder there were too many dark, insufficiently clear pages. And we didn’t even dare to dream about finding the descendants of a father with many children. And now, finally, we present to the readers what we managed to dig up in the archives and publications of past years, literally bit by bit. Finally, it was possible to connect documents that shed light on the history of the Vasilyev family. But we’ll tell you about everything in order, interspersing previously known information with information received by the MS correspondent recently.

Who is Fedor Vasiliev?

Fyodor Vasiliev (1704-1790) was born into the family of a monastic serf and was himself a serf, assigned to the Nikolo-Shartomsky monastery. He lived in the village of Vvedenskoye (now Vvedenye), and during the period of church reforms of Catherine the Great he was transferred to the category of “state-owned” peasants and moved to the Kufrino farm, which was located just a few fathoms from the village of Zheltonosovo, which at the beginning of the 18th century was territorially part of Shuisky district (now it is Ivanovo district). History is silent about the name of Fedor’s first wife, who gave birth to 69 children. But his second wife Anna, who gave him 17 children, was from the village of Melnichnoe.

By the way, Vasiliev is not a surname. Peasants in Rus' did not have surnames. It only meant a shortened form of his patronymic, that is, his father's name. Fyodor's son Alexey was already called Fedorov, Fyodor's grandson Egor was already called Alekseev, and so on.

The ancestral branch of the record holder

It was very difficult to feed such a large crowd of children. Children were sent to be raised in childless and small families. Thus, one of the sons of Fyodor Vasiliev - Alexey Fedorov - was transferred to the village of Teplintsevo to the serf peasant of the landowner A.G. Plautina. In this village, Alexey grew up, got married, got a house, and gave birth to children Yegor, Stepan, and Vasily. Alexei’s grandchildren were born, raised, and started families here: Fedor, Ivan, Vasily, Flor. Grandson Vasily married Zakharya peasant woman Marya Antonova and moved to live in his father-in-law's house. In Zakharyin, Vasily’s sons, Photius and Nikifor, were born, raised and started families. Their cousin Yakov, who lived in Teplintsevo, took the surname Florov in honor of his father. Ivan and Vasily received the surname Egorov in honor of their father Egor. And Fyodor generally took the Parukhins’ surname, which was incomprehensible (at least to us). The descendants of Fyodor Vasilyev - free peasants - fled from the village of Teplintsevo. Zakhar Parukhin, enrolled in the ranks of the burghers, began trading in the city of Kokhma. The old people died, the young people left, their trace was lost. The children of Photius and Nikifor Vasilyev also left the village of Zakharyino. However, at the turn of the 19th-20th centuries, Yegor Fotievich, Pyotr Fotievich, Fyodor Nikiforov and his brothers Mikhail, Peter, Dimitri, Maxim returned to their native lands.

So numerous offspring of those Florovs, Vasilievs, Egorovs, Parukhins live in this world, not realizing that their ancestor is the legendary Fyodor Vasiliev.

How memory faded and was revived

Peasants were not nobles; they did not carry out “knee paintings.” But according to ancient traditions, they honored their father and mother, remembered a little about their grandfather and knew practically nothing about their great-grandfather. Gradually, in the 4th-5th generations, the memory of ancestor Fyodor Vasiliev began to fade. The unwitting culprit of this was Alexey, Fyodor’s son, who was being brought up by adoptive parents who considered him their own son and hid his true origins from him.

A woman from Russia gave birth to 69 children - a world record

The family legend about the “heroine mother” could not be actively passed on from generation to generation.

The revival of the memory of Fyodor Vasiliev began with the history teacher of the Zakharyinsky school, local historian A. Dolgov, who came across A. Shirokogorov’s notes from 1870, telling about the large family of Fyodor Vasilyev. It was the son of the parish priest of the Vvedenskaya Church, Father Vasily, seminarian Sasha Shirokogorov who outlined the initial contours of the family tree of the Vasilyev family. He used the archives of the Church of the Presentation and the Nikolo-Shartomsky Monastery. The original version of the Vasiliev family tree was finalized by A. Dolgov, a history teacher at the Zakharyinskaya school.

The editors would like to express their gratitude to Valentina Vasilyeva, a native of the village of Zheltonosovo, now living in the village. Introduction, descendant of Fyodor Vasiliev in the 7th generation, for help in writing the article.

1. First of all, let us note the fact that the officially recorded record for the number of children born to one person belongs to the wife of a peasant from Russia, Fyodor Vasiliev. So, according to reliable historical sources, in the period between 1725 and 1765. she gave birth to 69 children. 2. As for the modern birth rate record, it belongs to a resident of the Chilean city of San Antonio, Leontina Alvina: it is officially recorded that in the period from 1943 to 1981. in total, she gave birth to 55 children. It is noteworthy that as a result of the first five pregnancies, only triplets were born, and exclusively male ones.

According to official documents, the heaviest newborn baby in the world is the son born to Carmelina Fedele, a resident of the Italian city of Aversa. The hero's weight was a record 10.2 kg. By the way, the birth was surprisingly easy and without any complications.

    Guinness World Record for Births

The Guinness record for the birth of children was set by a Russian peasant woman, the wife of Fyodor Vasiliev, who lived in the eighteenth century. So much so that no one can beat him to this day. The woman gave birth to sixty-nine children! Only two babies died during childbirth.

The Russian record holder gave birth to sixteen twins, seven triplets and four times quadruplets. And all this in twenty-seven births over thirty years.

After the death of his wife, Fyodor Vasiliev found a new wife - a potential mother. The second wife gave the restless peasant eighteen more children. By the way, even after this, Fyodor Vasiliev did not break the Guinness record for having children as a father of many children. The Guinness Book of World Records has recorded a staggering number of children from one father. The most prolific pope is a Moroccan ruler who lived in the first half of the eighteenth century. He helped give birth to three hundred and forty-two girls and seven hundred boys.

But the results of our contemporaries are not so impressive. There is now a woman living in Chile who has set a Guinness record for having children in the twenty-first century. Leontina Albina gave birth to fifty-five children. In total, she was “on maternity leave” for about forty years. The first five times the woman gave birth exclusively to triplets. Moreover, only boys were born in triplets.

The record for the largest number of births was set by the Englishwoman Elizabeth Greenhill, who lived in the seventeenth century. She gave birth thirty-nine times. As a result, she had thirty-nine children, among whom there was a real “battalion of women” - thirty-two girls and only seven boys.

The Guinness record for giving birth to children at one time belongs to American Bobbi McCaughey and Saudi Arabian Hasna Mohammed Humair. Both women gave birth to seven live babies at one time.

She broke the world record! The first woman to give birth to 11 children in one pregnancy!

Australian Geraldine Broadwick managed to give birth to nine children at once, but, unfortunately, only seven survived. Two were stillborn. Eight children were carried by Nkem Chukwu from the USA. She managed to give birth to only one naturally; the others were born with the help of doctors (caesarean section). One child died during childbirth.

Lina Medina became a mother at the age of five and a half. The Guinness record for the birth of children in the category “Oldest mother” was set by the Italian Rosanna Dalla Corta. She managed to give birth at sixty-three years old. Arsely Kekh from the USA also gave birth at the same age. Rosanna Dalla Corta was treated for infertility for a long time and believed that someday she would know the happiness of motherhood.

The heaviest child was born weighing ten kilograms, and the smallest one weighing two hundred and eighty-one grams.

Multiple pregnancy is a phenomenon that has been quite thoroughly studied and described by modern medicine. Doctors observe women carrying twins or triplets with special attention, but do not feel any surprise. Meanwhile, science knows cases of the simultaneous birth of four, five babies and even more. What is the largest number of children born to one woman in one birth and in her entire life?

Mothers who have many children on the same day

According to global statistics, one out of 700 pregnancies in the world is quadruple. Carrying and giving birth to four babies at the same time is a serious test for the female body. Expectant mothers expecting such an impressive birth are observed by doctors with special attention. But even today, not all quadruplets survive and reach adulthood. One of the most famous fours is the Durst sisters: Callie, Sarah, Kendra and Megan. These girls are not just quadruplets, but completely identical twins. In addition, today they are real stars thanks to their own reality show. In fact, quartets are born all over the world not so rarely, but the appearance of four identical twins is a real sensation. In 2000, there were only 15 such quadruplets around the world. Interestingly, most often twins in quartets are girls. The Guinness Book of Records not only records the largest number of children born to one woman, but also contains a record of the oldest mother of quadruplets. California resident Mary Fudel gave birth to four babies at once at the age of 55. Unfortunately, the history of this family quite sad: one baby died, two were given up for adoption, and only one of the four is being raised by his own mother.

Is it possible to have five children at the same time?

Science also knows cases of the simultaneous birth of five children as a result of natural pregnancies. In 1934, five girls were born in Canada. All the twins grew up and reached adulthood, invariably remaining a landmark for their hometown. True, the sisters often said that such fame did not bring them happiness. In 2013, in Salt Lake City, a young mother gave birth to three girls and two boys at the same time. This is not the largest number of children born at the same time, but the interesting fact is that pregnancy also occurred naturally. In 2016, in Odessa, Oksana Kobeletskaya, at the age of 37, became the mother of five children at the same time. Throughout her pregnancy, doctors promised this mother of many children the birth of triplets.

Known cases of six and seven babies being born at the same time

To give birth to six children at the same time - is this possible with natural conception? It's hard to believe, but the human body is much more resilient than we used to think. Today there are 14 sextuplets living in the world. Many of these children were born through natural conception. For the first time, the public learned about absolutely healthy six babies born to one mother at the same time in 1974.

Each family necessarily has its own largest number of children born at the same time. We are used to being proud of relatives who gave birth to 2-4 children at the same time. But in the McCoy family, living in Iowa, 7 babies were born at the same time in 1997. All children survived and are developing, but two of them have serious illnesses. There are several other known cases of the birth of septuplets. Such children appeared in 1998 with Hashi Mohammed Humair from Saudi Arabia. A similar case was recorded in Egypt, where Ghazali Ibrahim Omar, at the age of 27, also became the mother of seven children at once. The woman claims that the pregnancy is natural and she did not resort to artificial insemination.

    Absolute records of motherhood

The first known case of eight babies being born at the same time was recorded in 1998. Nkem Chukwu, who lives in Texas, became happy. This case is unique in that the first baby was born and the remaining seven children were born only on the 20th of the same month. One of the eight babies died almost immediately after birth, and the rest reached adulthood. For many years, it was believed that 8 was the largest number of children born to one woman in one birth. In 2009, the world's most famous octuplets were born. Their mother, Nadi Suliman, actively publicizes her unusual pregnancy and the process of raising babies in the media. To date, this case is the only one in which all newborns survived. And yet, what is the largest number of children a woman has given birth to at one time? With this achievement in the field of motherhood, Maria Fernandez from India entered the Guinness Book of Records. At the age of 42, the woman gave birth to 11 boys. The natural birth took only 37 minutes, all the babies were absolutely healthy.

How many children did the mother with many children have?

The largest number of children born to one woman during her life is 69. This record was set by a Russian woman, the wife of a peasant. Fedora Vasilyeva in the 18th century. Between 1725 and 1765, the heroine mother gave birth to twins 16 times, triplets 7 times and quadruplets 4 times. Only two out of 69 babies died in infancy; all the rest grew and developed normally. The record set in the 18th year by the peasant Vasilyeva has still not been broken. But there are other interesting examples in modern history. For example, in Chile at the end of the 20th century, Leontina Apbina gave birth to only 55 children.

Unique cases related to pregnancy and childbirth

Not all records in the category of multiple pregnancies end with stories of happy large families. In 1917, a case was recorded in Rome fifteen-fruited pregnancy. According to doctors, this phenomenon is a consequence of long-term treatment of female infertility. However, the record pregnancy was terminated. World medical statistics have also recorded cases of one woman bearing 9, 10 and even 11 children at the same time. In such situations, stillbirth is common and high in the first days after birth. To date, the largest number of children born to one woman during one pregnancy is 11. The Guinness Book of Records in this category includes the birth of Maria Fernandez, during which completely healthy and viable boys were born.

On January 10, 1974, six twins were born to Sue Rosenkowitz in Cape Town and for the first time all newborns survived.

But this, as they say, is not the limit. More twins have been and are being born in the world. What is the largest number of children born at the same time?

    Gears

In October 2008, 31-year-old Digna Carpio from New York gave birth to six twins - four boys and two girls. The weight of the babies at birth ranged from 0.68 to 0.9 kilograms. The happy mother and her husband, 36-year-old Victor, already had a seven-year-old son at that time.

The birth of six twins is an extremely rare occurrence, occurring in one case per 4.4 million population. Only once before had six babies been born at once in New York. This happened in 1997.

In October 2010, in the Italian city of Benevento, near Naples, 30-year-old Carmela Oliva gave birth to six children - four girls and two boys. In Italy this was the first such case in the last 14 years.

To help the babies be born, doctors were forced to resort to caesarean section. Children were born with a low weight - from 600 to 800 grams. According to doctors, this phenomenon is not associated with artificial insemination, but with the treatment that the mother underwent - the fact is that Italian laws prohibit the transplantation of more than three embryos.

    Seventeens

Bobbi McCaughey (USA) gave birth to 7 children on November 19, 1997. They weighed between 1048 and 1474 grams and were born at 31 weeks of gestation in 16 minutes via caesarean section.

7 twins were born 8 weeks prematurely - on January 14, 1998 - to 40-year-old Hasna Mohammed Humair (Saudi Arabia). Among them were 4 boys and 3 girls, the smallest weighed 907 grams.

In August 2008, in the northern Egyptian province of Beheira, the 27-year-old wife of a local farmer, Ghazalu Khamis, gave birth to seven twins at once! As it turned out, the Egyptian woman dreamed of giving her husband a son and took pregnancy-inducing drugs. The result is four sons and three daughters.

Ghazala Khamis was placed under observation two months before giving birth: the development of the twins in the womb did not cause any concern - the doctors were only concerned about the increasing pressure on the kidneys. After the caesarean section, the woman in labor also underwent a blood transfusion. But all the babies were born healthy and quite large - from 1.4 to 2.8 kg, which in itself is a mystery of nature.

    Octuplets

On January 26, 2009, 33-year-old Nadi Suleman gave birth to eight twins, and all of them were healthy.

The mother of a newborn octuplet lived then with her other children and parents in the suburbs of Los Angeles - in the small town of Whittier. The family already had six children aged from two to seven years old, including a pair of twins.

The children’s grandmother left her job and devoted herself entirely to her daughter’s family. And grandfather, to help Nadya, went to Iraq to work under a contract. Nadia herself claimed that she decided to take this step because of her own childhood, in which she so lacked brothers and sisters. In addition, the eccentric American said that she follows the example of her idol, Angelina Jolie, who has many children. A few years ago, Suleman even had plastic surgery to look like an actress.

The octuplets were conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF). In such cases, doctors insist on reduction (removal) of some embryos. After all, such a quantity can have a bad effect on both the health of the mother and the health of future children.

But the Californian, with the support of her large family, refused the reduction. A single mother divorced her husband a long time ago precisely because they could not have children together.

The birth by caesarean section was nine weeks earlier than expected. The team of 46 doctors who delivered the baby were expecting the birth of seven babies, which, although not often, does happen. However, there were eight newborns - six boys and two girls - and all of them were quite healthy. The weight of babies is from 700 g to 1.9 kg. Seven of them were immediately breathing on their own and were bottle-fed. The whole family was discharged from the maternity hospital home just a week later.

    From 10 and more

There is information about the birth of ten twins at once. Such cases were recorded in Spain in 1924, in China in 1936 and in Brazil in 1946. But this is not the limit.

Eleven children at once - this is the largest number of twins, information about which is known. The first birth of 11 twins occurred on May 29, 1971 in the USA, in the city of Philadelphia. The second - in 1977 in Bangladesh, in the city of Bagarhat. In both cases, none of the children, unfortunately, survived.
