- Fabric suitcases- one of the inexpensive models. You can’t fit anything fragile into such suitcases, even if you wrap a bottle, for example, of wine from Georgia in a towel. There will still be a risk of not bringing home the gift. The advantages of fabric suitcases are the variety of colors, many external pockets and the fact that the suitcase can take the shape of things when packed. The downside is the instability after packing and the speed at which dirt appears, which is difficult to wash, and such suitcases quickly tear from the pressure of things, especially around the zipper, and the design, or most likely the lack thereof, can also be considered a disadvantage.
- Leather suitcases. Probably the most expensive and timeless suitcases that exist. Even if you take it with you as hand luggage into the cabin, due to the constant shifting from shelf to shelf, the material will not last long in perfect condition. Probably, leather suitcases are justified only in the case of a millionaire owner who has a personal plane :)
- ABS plastic suitcases are not expensive. At least once, have you paid attention to the versions of suitcases with the Eiffel Tower or painted with the British flag or some other mainstream. These suitcases are made of ABS plastic and are not very resistant to mechanical stress, be it dropped at the airport or scratches. Heavy and fragile, but with some design! - Polycarbonate- the most common material in the world of suitcases. Elastic, lightweight and resistant to mechanical damage. Typically, polycarbonate suitcases need to be filled to capacity with things to prevent them from breaking. That is, do not transport it empty or not completely filled. But now there are improved models on the market that are not afraid of this, for example, models without any additives - only 100% durable polycarbonate.
- Polypropylene — best option for travelers. It is a tough, durable and impact-resistant suitcase material, but a little heavy. If it’s hard to lift it empty, then I can imagine the weight of it when it’s packed to the top.
- Curv- a material patented by Samsonite, which has exorbitant prices for all types of suitcases. I’d rather use this money to make a couple of flights in Asia than to buy such an expensive suitcase. But still, the Curv material consists of interwoven polypropylene fibers, which gives it special flexibility, maximum strength and lightness. It's up to you to decide.
As an experiment, we chose two suitcases from different price categories, but of the same material: a regular Camel Active suitcase made of polycarbonate with plastic admixtures and ultra-wear-resistant 100% polycarbonate from Delsey. The second one turned out to be more expensive and of better quality, but buying two of these was a toad’s choice. Plus, we have never dealt with plastic suitcases and decided that if one of them breaks, then at the same time we’ll see which suitcases we don’t need to buy. But, nevertheless, it turned out to be a great experiment! But more on that later.
Criteria for choosing the best suitcase
Definitely, the suitcase should be suitable for your lifestyle - how often you travel, what purposes it will serve, what type of transport will be preferable and how much stuff you have (whether you are a woman).
First of all, you need to pay attention to suitcase dimensions, estimating the number of things being transported. If there are few things or you go on business trips for 2-3 days, or generally travel for no more than a week, then it makes sense to choose a small suitcase that can pass for hand luggage, but it is worth considering that there are standards for the size of such a suitcase.
The length, width and height of a piece of hand luggage must not exceed 50*40*20 cm or 110 cm in the sum of three dimensions.
And most importantly, you cannot carry liquids exceeding 100 ml in your carry-on suitcase, as well as nail scissors and other sharp objects.
The second criterion is suitcase weight. Suitcases made of fabric and polycarbonate are lightweight. Everywhere they write that this is a very important parameter that can protect you from being overweight and overpaying at the airport for extra kg. But, as practice shows, if you have packed a lot of things with you, then one or two kilograms of the weight of the suitcase will not save the situation. In any case, the airline may drop one kilogram at check-in and simply let you through with this small advantage. But if you fly on budget airlines (low-cost airlines), then you will have to transfer the extra kilos into your hand luggage. And this is good if you invest in the required 7-10 kg in hand luggage weight.
The third criterion is possibility to expand the space in a suitcase. I think everyone is familiar with additional zippers on suitcases that hide the fold of the fabric, but if you open the zipper and release the fabric, then a couple more centimeters are added to the height of the suitcase, about 4 to 8. At the beginning of our journey, we prayed for expanders, but now, dramatically Having rethought the filling of our suitcases, we don’t use them at all, but we bought them “just in case.”
It is very important to pay attention to quantity and quality of wheels suitcase. I still can’t understand why some people recommend buying suitcases with two wheels, if four are good on any surface? Because you don’t have to put any more effort into dragging it behind you, and on the flat surfaces of airports it’s a blast – you can push with one finger! Of course, subject to the presence of wheels with good materials. Which do not create a lot of noise during operation and do not move the suitcase in different directions, for example, polyurethane ones.

But the cheap Camel Active is not of such quality, the frame and legs scratch easily, which create a lot of noise and require effort, even for rolling on a flat airport floor.
But if you are afraid of contamination or rubbing of the frame, you can purchase fabric covers for suitcases. After flights, the suitcase will remain beautiful and the covers can be easily washed.
