However, in fact, the history of celebrating Oilman's Day is much longer. The decree “On the establishment of an annual holiday of the All-Union Day of Oil and Gas Industry Workers” was signed on August 28, 1965, and its appearance was largely associated with the beginning of large-scale development of oil and gas fields in Western Siberia
The tradition of celebrating professional holidays began to emerge in the USSR in the pre-war years, but it became widespread in the post-war period. The first - on July 28, 1936 - the All-Union Day of Railway Workers was established in the Soviet Union, which at first did not even have a clear date. It appeared only on July 9, 1940 - the first Sunday of August became the professional holiday of railway workers. In the last year of the Great Patriotic War, communications and radio broadcasting workers received their holiday - “to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the invention of radio by the Russian scientist A.S. It all started at the lecture " Big Oil Tyumen", which in the crowded Great hall The Polytechnic Museum in Moscow on January 25, 1965 was read by the chairman of the State Committee for the Oil Industry under the USSR State Planning Committee Nikolai Baibakov and the head of the Tyumen Territorial Geological Department Yuri Ervieu.

During this period, the main supplier of black gold to the USSR was the Volga-Ural region, but the prospects for creating a new fuel and energy base in Western Siberia were already obvious. "Oil Tyumen" was considered as an advanced springboard for practical testing of technical and technological innovations in production, drilling and oil and gas construction. During the lecture, Nikolai Baibakov compared the grandeur and significance of the “great development” of the hydrocarbon resources of Western Siberia with the post-war epic of the development of virgin and fallow lands, emphasizing that “in sequence, this oil-bearing region is figuratively called the “Third Baku,” but in terms of significance the region is the “First Baku "

Indeed, even the first results of the work of oil workers in the region were impressive: at the end of 1964, during the trial operation of the Trekhozernoye, Ust-Balykskoye and Megionskoye fields, the country for the first time received 209 thousand tons of high-quality West Siberian oil - this is how much river workers managed to transport on oil tankers during the short Siberian navigation period . The launch at the end of 1965 of the Shaim-Tyumen main oil pipeline, more than 410 km long, connecting the oil fields of the Tyumennef-tegaz association with the railway station of the regional center, promised that the number of extracted black gold would move from thousands to millions of tons.
Yuri Ervier, in turn, noted during the lecture that the discovery of the West Siberian oil and gas region, the reserves of which exceeded everything hitherto known in the USSR, was a major event in domestic geological exploration practice, deserving the highest rating in the country. It is enough to note that in 1964 the team of the Tyumen Territorial Geological Administration fulfilled four annual plans for increasing oil and natural gas reserves and discovered 19 oil and 21 gas fields.
“Why is there still no professional holiday for oil and gas workers in the country?” - one of the lecture visitors quite logically expressed bewilderment. Nikolai Baibakov suggested that it is the large-scale development of hydrocarbon resources in Western Siberia that will become a powerful argument for the country's leadership when deciding to establish an all-Union holiday - Oil and Gas Worker's Day.
A month later, the issue of establishing Oilman’s Day was discussed on the sidelines of the All-Union Meeting of Geologists in Moscow, the main item on the agenda of which was a discussion of the results of the implementation of the seven-year plan for the development of the mineral resource base of the national economy. However, in essence, we were talking about developing a plan for the further development of the domestic oil and gas industry.
And again, from the lips of an outstanding geologist, academician Dmitry Nalivkin, information was heard that the potential of the oil fields of the Absheron Peninsula has actually been exhausted, and in the “Second Baku”, the Ural-Volga region, a decrease in the dynamics of oil production growth has clearly become apparent. In this regard, Academician Nalivkin called for “without hesitation” to engage in the comprehensive development of the oil subsoil of Western Siberia, while at the same time not losing sight of the enormous potential of oil-bearing structures on the continental shelf of the Soviet Union. Thus, the country was on the verge of a major energy breakthrough, the start of a project, the implementation of which would involve tens, hundreds of thousands, millions of residents of the country. Which, in addition to solving direct industry problems, had to quickly lay the foundation of the construction industry in Western Siberia, both for the development of oil and gas fields, and for the construction of cities from scratch, unique in world practice, and in the most difficult natural and climatic conditions, on absolutely no inhabited areas.

Nikolai Baibakov gave a detailed report, which began with the words: “After the October Revolution, thanks to the attention of the Communist Party, the Soviet people essentially revived the oil industry and brought it to second place in the world.” He described the work of West Siberian geologists, who discovered 32 oil and 27 gas fields, as an “outstanding feat.” However, these assessments cannot be called unfounded. Data on the growth of the resource base and production are given above; processing was also actively developing. Over the years since the end of the Great Patriotic War, the volume of refining in the country has increased 10 times, the length of oil and product pipelines has doubled over the previous five-year period.
At the end of his speech, Nikolai Baibakov emphasized: “The establishment of the All-Union Day of Oil and Gas Industry Workers marks the high appreciation of their work by the party and government. This celebration became a memorable date back in 1980. This happened on the first of October. The Presidium of the Supreme Council decided that people related to gas should be additionally honored. This holiday was intended to increase the prestige of work. When the USSR collapsed, in Russia the day was preserved on its original terms.
Industrial oil production in Ukraine began in the 18th century, and already in 1909 2 million tons of oil were produced in the Carpathian region. The gas industry dates back to the commissioning of the Dashavskoye gas field and the construction of the first Dashava-Stry gas pipeline in 1924.

A year before the introduction of the professional holiday of oil and gas workers in the USSR, the 100th anniversary of the formation of the domestic oil and gas industry was widely celebrated. In the fall of 1864, in the west of the Kuban region near Anapa, mechanical shock-rod drilling of oil wells using a steam engine was used for the first time in Russia. In 1865, drilling operations there ceased as oil exploration began on the Kudako River.
On February 15 (February 3, old style), 1866, the first oil fountain in Russia erupted from a well drilled mechanically in the valley of the Kudako River.
The news of the first oil gusher in Russia attracted the attention of various circles of Russian society to the oil business.
In August 1868, Siberian industrialist Mikhail Sidorov began drilling the first oil well in the Russian North on the banks of the Ukhta River in the Pechersk region. During the same period, the first exploration work for oil using machine drilling also began in the Ural-Volga region.

Industrial development of the oil and gas bearing region between the Volga and the Urals began. In the Middle Volga region, underground layers with large reserves of natural gas have been discovered. During the Great Patriotic War, it was decided to quickly build a gas pipeline to supply defense enterprises with fuel. In 1943, the Buguruslan-Kuibyshev gas pipeline with a length of 180 kilometers was put into operation. In 1946, the first long-distance gas pipeline in the USSR, Saratov-Moscow, 843 kilometers long, supplied gas from the Elshanskoye field to enterprises and Muscovites’ homes.
During the 1950s, the CCCP oil industry introduced reservoir pressure maintenance systems to increase oil production. Technical re-equipment of the entire industry was carried out: new installations for drilling wells, roller bits, turbo drills, submersible centrifugal electric pumps, etc. were created and implemented.
A turning point in the development of the CCCP oil industry was the discovery and development of fields in Western Siberia. In 1964, their commercial operation began, and in less than ten years, oil and gas condensate production was increased to 200 million tons.
Subsequently, in the oil industry, field technological installations were automated, and industrial methods for constructing technological installations became widespread.
The development of oil fields is associated with the development of oil pipeline transport. Oil is transported through a network of main oil pipelines that connect all major oil regions with oil refineries in the country and other countries.
Today, the oil and gas industry is the backbone of the Russian economy and forms almost a quarter of the gross domestic product and two-thirds of the federal budget's export revenues, and also creates demand for high-tech equipment.

In 2015, oil and gas condensate production amounted to 534.1 million tons, and gas production - 635.5 billion cubic meters.
