The tradition of decorating the New Year tree came from Germany - at the beginning of the 16th century, this tree turned from an attribute of Christmas into a symbol winter holidays in general (fortunately, the time difference between Christmas and New Year is small).

According to one version, the holiday tree owes its canonical appearance to Martin Luther - it is believed that it was he who put on festive table a coniferous tree with candles and the Star of Bethlehem on the top (beech branches and young deciduous trees were widely used before this).

The first Christmas trees were small so that they could be placed on the table.
