Distribution of knitting needles when knitting mittens

The height of the cuff in classic mittens is from 6 to 9 cm, after which they knit about 5 cm - this is the distance to the base of the thumb.

To form a thumb wedge in the first round row on the 1st needle, knit the first 3 stitches, then pull a knit crossed loop from the cross thread, then knit 2 more loops and again pull 1 knit crossed loop from the cross thread. Repeat such increases in every 3rd circular row 7 times on both sides of the wedge = 18 loops.

Next, knit 2 circular rows without adding and slip the added loops onto a pin. For the thumb, pick up the reserved stitches, add stitches from the jumper and distribute them on 3 needles. Knit a finger height of 5-6 cm, then decrease - in every 2nd round row, knit 2 stitches together at the beginning of each knitting needle. Pull the remaining loops together with the working thread. Cut the thread, fasten it and hide it inside your finger.

For the right mitten, the hole for the thumb is knitted on the 3rd knitting needle, and for the left one - on the 4th knitting needle. Slip 5 (or as many as indicated in the instructions) loops onto the pin. Then cast on the same number of stitches over the slipped stitches in the next round. To knit the thumb, pick up stitches from the pin and stitches on the opposite side of the hole, and additionally cast on 1 stitch between them. Distribute the resulting loops on 3 knitting needles and knit in circular rows in stockinette stitch with the 4th knitting needle. Knit to the middle of the thumbnail, then decrease - in each round, knit the last 2 stitches of each needle together. Pull the remaining loops together with the working thread. Cut the thread, fasten it and hide it inside your finger.

Rules for tying a toe

The main part of the mitten is knitted to the tip of the little finger, after which decreases are made, which form the toe.

On the 1st and 3rd knitting needles, knit the first 2 loops together, knitting them together behind the back walls.

On the 2nd and 4th knitting needles, knit the last 2 stitches together behind the back walls. Decrease in each row or every other row, depending on the size of the mitten and the length of your fingers. When there are 2 loops left on each knitting needle, transfer the loops to 2 knitting needles and decrease until there are 2 loops left on each knitting needle. Then break the thread, pull the loops one through the other and tighten. Fasten the end of the thread inside the mitten.

Rules for knitting gloves

After 3 circular rows, start knitting thumb wedge , for which mark the 4th and 7th loops on the palm and in the next 3rd circular row after the 1st loop and before the second mark, add the 1st loop, knitting it from the transverse thread with the front crossed.

Repeat the increases in every 3rd circular row 5 times, then knit 3 more circular rows without increasing and slip the added wedge loops onto a pin. Close the loops again in a circle, casting on an additional 2 loops between them.

Next, knit in circular rows and after 10 cm from the last row, leave 5 palm loops and the first 5 back loops for the little finger and add 2 loops between them for a jumper = 12 loops. Leave the remaining loops temporarily, and knit 12 stitches in stockinette stitch in circular rows. 6 cm from the beginning of knitting the little finger, decrease 1 loop in every 2nd circle from the palm side, knitting the 2nd and 3rd loops together with the front and on the back side, knitting the 2nd and 3rd stitches together with the knit stitch, repeat the decreases 2 times, and then in each circle until there are 8 loops left on the knitting needles. Close the set aside loops in a circle and knit 2 circular rows, casting on 2 additional loops between them.

The first step is to determine the length of the future product to the wrist. That is, in the short version, for example, 5 cm, and in the long version - above the elbow.
For long mitts, take an additional measurement of the circumference of the place where they begin - above the elbow, elbow, below it.
Select a pattern or several to work with and make a test pattern. Determine the knitting density.
Draw a diagram of future fingerless gloves, mark the narrow and wide areas. For them, plan to decrease the loops and widen the fabric. For example, for high mitts with the beginning just below the elbow, it is convenient to decrease 3-4 loops every 2 cm and continue until the wrist. Then pick up the loops for the palm.
Mark the wrist area with a short elastic band, a purl row, and openwork holes for decoration with a lace or ribbon.
A number of needlewomen mark the place for the thumb with a wedge of extension from the wrist. Others knit straight fabric and leave open loops for opening it.
Continue working the main pattern/s up to the knuckles or a little higher.
Decrease to 8 stitches and switch to a tight elastic band, garter stitch, openwork insert to the height of the middle of the middle finger. Or distribute the loops as for knitting the fingers of a glove and knit them to a height of 2-3 cm. Close the loops in the usual way.
Return to the thumb and knit the fabric for it to a height of 1.5-3 cm.

Getting started is the same for both mittens and gloves. Rib the cuff and continue with the base pattern, adding an extension wedge for the thumb. Be careful in its location. For the right mitten glove there are 2 knitting needles at the end, for the left one - 4.
Leave loops for the thumb hole, add half of them. Carry on circular knitting with decreasing over the left loops to their original number at the start of work.
Having knitted 3-4 cm, knit the back of the mitten, and knit the inside. This is where you marked the start of the finger flap.
Distribute the fabric to work over each finger and tie them halfway.
Return to the thumb hole and knit the fabric for it.
Pick up stitches from the purl row under your fingers and cast on the same number of stitches. Close into a circle.
