Summer is coming to an end, and with it the summer holidays. Soon the students will take their places at their desks and continue or just begin their studies. In this master class we will knit a very necessary thing for every schoolchild - a pencil case in the form of a pencil with our own hands.
To knit a pencil case we will need:
- "Hard" yarn of pink and white;
- Hook No. 1;
- Pencil (to determine the length of the pencil case).
We put 20 chain loops on the hook using pink yarn. This yarn should be stiff enough so that the pencil case holds its shape well.
Now we will need to connect the ends of this chain so that it does not wrap, otherwise the knitting will go in a spiral. To do this, remove the hook from the last loop and insert it into the first loop of the chain, and then into the last. Make sure that the chain does not twist.
We pull the last loop through the first, making a connecting post.
We knit quite a lot of such rows of single crochets. To determine the length of the pencil case, we periodically measure the knitting with a pencil. The pencil case should be about 2 cm longer than the pencil.
To crochet the lid of a pencil case, hook 4 air loops from the same yarn.

Designing a wooden pencil case
Before you start making a pencil case with your own hands, you need to carry out a number of preparatory operations. The first of them is design. As part of this type of activity, we will calculate the required amount of materials based on the expected dimensions of the product and draw up a drawing of the pencil case.
Let's decide on the size. Let's say we have a free corner in the room, and we plan to install a pencil case in it. Its dimensions in plan (top) will be 350x560 mm, the desired height for ease of use will be about two meters. Immediately before making the pencil case, let’s draw all its details on a sheet of paper, maintaining the proportions.
Having decided on the dimensions, you can proceed in two ways - make the necessary parts yourself or order them from professionals. In almost every big city nowadays there are specialized organizations that provide, for a small fee, services for cutting sheet wood materials and lining them with edge strips.
Manufacturing of pencil case parts
Since we decided to make a pencil case with our own hands, we will dwell in detail on cutting chipboard, MDF or plywood ourselves. To work, you will need a jigsaw or a circular saw with a large table and a special saw blade. Sawing of lined materials has a number of features. These include:
- The need to maintain a 90 degree angle everywhere.
