Even before the revolution, many wishes were expressed to get rid of simplifications of oral speech, not to generalize dress as the only form of the verb. Especially northerners (in St. Petersburg and Moscow) began to willingly mix both verbs in use; southerners distinguished them.
Since the 50s of our century, the desire to distinguish between these verbs has again appeared, and people have appeared who valued the meaning of the shades. But in the meantime, colloquial speech took its toll. Dress and dress... As if despairing of being able to defend the difference, the reference book “Difficulties of Word Usage and Variants of Norms of the Russian Literary Language” in 1973 for the first time allows the use of colloquial speech both verbs are indifferent: to dress or put on - both on oneself and on someone else, on top (a hat on the head, glasses on the nose) and “around oneself” (put clothes on oneself).
The word dress is connected with the word clothes, but put on is not. Still, Russian speech still wants to distinguish who from what, although the “category of animation” in our time has already become grammatical, manifests itself in inclination (I see a table - I see my father) or in syntax.
