History and traditions of World School Library Day
Let's talk about the history and traditions of the holiday. International School Library Day has been celebrated in different countries of the world on the initiative of UNESCO since 1999. The initiator of the holiday was the President of the International Association of School Libraries, Blanche Woolles. In 2005, the holiday received official status.
In 2008, School Librarian Month was dedicated to School Librarian Day, which was first celebrated under the motto “Literacy and learning in your school library.”
In our country, the month was also celebrated for the first time in 2008, under the motto “School library is on the agenda.” The main event of the month in Russia was the Forum of school librarians in the Mikhailovsky-Pushkinsky Nature Reserve in the Pskov region.
The history of school libraries in our country goes back several centuries. The first educational library in Rus' appeared in the 1630s at the Kiev-Mohyla Academy.
During the reign of Peter the Great, a library was created at the Academy of Sciences. At the same time, the first school libraries appeared: “At schools, the library should be content, because without a library, the Academy is like without a soul.”
In the 18th century, the formation of state system education. For each class, their own schools were created, at which libraries appeared.
In the 1830s, there were 62 gymnasium libraries and several dozen at district schools in Russia.
However, librarianship received real development only under Soviet rule. In the 1930s, there were already over 44 thousand school libraries in our country.
