How to sew hangers to a dress. How to cover shoulder pads for a dress with fabric

Raglan shoulder pad pattern

The shoulder pad consists of two main layers - top and bottom. The bottom layer pattern is removed from the shoulder section of the sleeve of the coat pattern.

By increasing the pattern of the bottom layer by the thickness of the shoulder pad, we get the pattern of the top layer. We draw it as a separate detail and put it aside for now, we will need it at the very end.

Making the lower layer of the shoulder pad

Using a pattern bottom layer. We press two layers of padding polyester into one with an iron, covering them with a damp iron. The layers of padding polyester, slightly melting, are glued together into a thin plate 1-1.5 mm thick. From it we cut out the details of the shoulder pad.

We reduce the pattern along the outer edge by 0.7 cm. We cut a part from padding polyester according to it, place it on the already pressed parts and press again. We repeat again. As a result, each part consists of four layers with a gradual decrease in the thickness of the outer edge. The stepped arrangement of layers will prevent the shoulder pad from being printed on the front side of the product.

From calico we cut out the details of the shoulder pad with an allowance of 1 cm along all cuts. We place the molded parts of the shoulder pad on them and quilt all the layers. We sew the shoulder sections, cut the seam allowances to 0.7 cm, and iron them. We sew the seam with a zigzag to flatten it.

We connect the paper pattern of the shoulder pad along the shoulder line (shelf + back). We mark the lines along which the parts have already been reduced (twice 0.7 cm each) and cut off the excess from the pattern. Then we mark the pattern, again reducing the parts with a difference of 1 cm. We get three parts.

We cut them out of padding polyester.

We sew all three parts manually to the bottom layer. First the large one, then the medium one and finally the smallest one. At the same time, close the darts, aligning their edges. Important! Do not tighten the stitches.

When all three layers are sewn, cover the shoulder pad with a damp iron. Using an iron, carefully, trying not to press down the padding polyester too much, press the layers together. We do this so that we get a smooth transition from the edge to the center of the shoulder pad. Along the perimeter we melt the layers more strongly, and in the center we act carefully so as to only slightly melt the top layer. As a result, the shoulder pad will be dense on top, but the inside will remain soft, just like a crusty bun.

Final shaping of the raglan shoulder pad

Take a pattern top layer shoulder pad (shelf and back), combine along the shoulder seam and cut out of padding polyester in one piece.
Place it on top of the bottom layer of the shoulder pad. We close the dart, aligning the edges, and sew the part by hand along the outer edge. Cover the shoulder pad with a damp iron and carefully, without pressing too hard with the iron, glue the top layer of the shoulder pad to the bottom. We work with an iron like a sculptor, sculpting the desired shape. In the photo you can see the difference: on the left the shoulder pad is not ironed, on the right it is “sculpted”.

We check the consistency of the pattern of the top layer and the resulting shoulder pad. In our example, the shoulder length on the pattern needed to be increased by 1 cm. We cut out the top layer of the shoulder pad from calico, taking into account the adjustments. Sew the shoulder seam, iron it, embroider it. We place the calico piece on the shoulder pad and baste it. We sew it along the outer edge with the lower part. The stitch follows the contour of the padding polyester parts. We cut the seam allowance to 0.5 - 0.7 cm and overlock it with an overlocker. The shoulder pad is ready.

It seems that shoulder pads have long gone out of style. Or they haven’t entered it yet. After all, they have already experienced their “boom” more than once; fashion designers either bring them into favor, or completely forget about them.
In the late 80s, not a single model of women's blouses, dresses, or jackets could do without shoulder pads. And then they somehow imperceptibly “flew” from our shoulders. We said goodbye to this detail with relief!

But not so long ago I rehabilitated my shoulder pads. How could it be without them, when they slide over your shoulders and constantly slide onto your back. I guess it's just my figure. Or I don’t quite correctly calculate the number of buttonholes on blouses - they are quite spacious, I like a deep neckline. At first I solved this issue with pins - I fastened the shoulder seam to the bra strap. And then I remembered shoulder pads and “equipped” all my

Of course, buying shoulder pads is as easy as shelling pears. There are a great variety of them in craft stores, thick and thin, large and small, of all colors and shades. But I have two reasons for sewing the shoulder pads myself.

Firstly, the nearest handicraft store is quite far away. And sometimes a ready-made blouse is needed urgently. Secondly, as a rule, ready-made shoulder pads are made of synthetic fabrics and foam rubber. This material is absolutely not suitable for me. Therefore, in 20 minutes (sometimes less) I make suitable summer shoulder pads for myself. Summer ones - because they are very thin and are designed not so much to raise the shoulders, but to hold the blouse on them.

Of course, the first shoulder pads took a little longer, because you need a pattern. I suggest using my measurements and adjusting according to your needs. We need three patterns of different sizes.

I indicated the length and width on them. We just draw an arc. When cutting out a pattern, it is better to fold the paper in half, so it will turn out symmetrically. And remember that the height of the arc should in no case exceed the width of the shoulder, so that the shoulder pad does not stick out and does not have to be redone.

Before cutting out the shoulder pads, measure the shoulder width of the blouse and reduce (or increase) the height of the arch.

For one pair of shoulder pads we need to cut out six large pieces from fabric. I usually use completely waste fabric - an old sheet, a worn-out T-shirt, a worn-out nightgown and other rags that match the color. 4 parts need to be cut out of more or less decent fabric, and a completely waste rag will do for the two inner parts.

I often use scraps left over from sewn items for shoulder pads. When there are very few scraps, I make the top and bottom of the shoulder pads in different colors.

From completely waste fabric (anything will do here, even old tights) we cut out the “filling” of the shoulder pads. I used sleeves from an old men's T-shirt, just two layers of fabric are needed. I cut out two smaller patterns and two small ones.

Place the lining on the cut piece like this.

We quilt the “stuffing” on the machine. (You can also quilt it by hand. I used to do this, especially when thick shoulder pads were needed and there were much more “stuffing” than two layers. Then I cut it out of thick fabric or batting.) Place the quilted lining on the lower part of the shoulder pad and close it top.

If they are made of different fabrics, then keep in mind that the wrong side of the filling, that is, layers of fabric of different sizes, should be in contact with the lower part of the shoulder pad, the one that will lie on the shoulder and not on the blouse.

We sew the edges of the shoulder pad on the machine with a zigzag seam. I go around the perimeter twice to make the edge stronger. If you want the shoulder pads to look neater, then instead of “zigzag” their edges can be finished with bias tape to match the fabric.

The finished shoulder pads need to be sewn to the blouse. I place them under my bra straps first.

I adjust it so that it lies flat. Then I put on the blouse and pin the blouse to the shoulder pads along the cuff line. (The picture shows a fragment of a tunic)

I carefully pull them out of the straps, take off the blouse and sew them to the blouse only along the edges.

When I put on a blouse, I adjust the shoulder pads under the straps - they hold the blouse well in one place, preventing it from moving. And I feel much more confident. Here is a fragment of a blouse with a shoulder pad.

And although summer clothes are most often made of cotton, sometimes techniques suit them

HOW TO SEW SHOULDER PADS WITH YOUR OWN HANDS

Some styles of clothing require emphasizing the line of the shoulders, and sometimes posture also looks better if shoulder pads are sewn under the clothes. Sometimes such a little thing is difficult to buy and therefore you need to learn how to make raglan and triangular shoulder pads with your own hands.

You can sew shoulder pads with your own hands; it’s not at all difficult if you make the pattern correctly. Shoulder pads consist of a pad (cover) and an inner lining made of batting or foam rubber. The finished height of the shoulder pad at the end of the shoulder is no more than 10-12mm. The cover (cover) is made of two layers of calico, identical in shape and size. Make a pattern for life-size shoulder pads according to the drawing, taking into account that 1 square measures 2x2cm.

SHOULDER PADS FOR A DRESS, BLOUSE, JACKET PATTERN

According to the drawing, make a pattern for shoulder pads in full size. Using the pattern, cut out two pieces of thick fabric or rigid interfacing. Cut two from soft interfacing, but along the lines of pattern No. 2, so that they are shorter than the previous one along the rounded line.

Then fold the soft padding pieces together and pin them together. Then pin them together with part No. 1, so that the smallest one lies on top and the straight cuts coincide. Then pin part 2, bending the shoulder pad for convenience, and stitch all the layers.

Shoulder pads for a dress, blouse or jacket without lining, made of translucent fabric, the top part should be cut out of fabric to match the item or from the same fabric as the item. If the item is lined, the top layer of shoulder pads is made from lining fabric.

In this case, the top is cut out according to the first pattern with a fold in a straight line and an allowance of 2 cm along the rounded line. Fold this part in half, insert the prepared thick shoulder pad and sew the outer sections with a zigzag stitch. Trim seam allowances as close to the stitching as possible.

RAGLAN SHOULDER PADS PATTERN

To make it, draw patterns according to the cells in full size. Cut out 4 pieces of shoulder pads from the rigid pad according to pattern 3.4, and two pieces with a bend according to pattern 5.

Sew parts 3 and 4 in a zigzag, folding them together so that the marks on them coincide. Place a piece of thin foam rubber or padding polyester between them.

Cut the bottom part to the mark along the “cut” line. Fold the edges overlapping and pin to the top of the shoulder pad.

Sew the parts together, giving shape. Cut the upper shoulder pad from the lining fabric and pins on the main one, stitch with a zigzag.

HOW TO SEW SHOULDER PADS TO A DRESS OR OTHER THING

To sew on the shoulder pad, fold it in half and align the fold with the shoulder seam of the item, so that the thick part aligns with the edge of the shoulder at the armhole. In this position, secure the shoulder pad with pins, then sew it to the shoulder seam at the ends of the fold, and sew the corners to the armhole seam of the dress.

Once upon a time, shoulder pads were a trendy detail of jackets, coats, dresses and even light blouses. Shoulder pads, like any trend, have gone through periods of wild popularity and almost complete oblivion, but not so long ago fashion designers remembered them again. In this video you will first see the process of making a shoulder pad, and then how to sew it in:

Rules for wearing modern shoulder pads

Modern shoulder pads are more of an external detail, decorated with rivets, sequins, chains, decorative buttons and so on. Modern trends promote an extended shoulder line in any form, but not everyone is ready to embody the bold ideas of designers and copy the images of famous fashionistas in real life. Ordinary women are afraid of shoulder pads, fearing that such things create the impression of a rough and heavy image. In fact, there is absolutely nothing to be afraid of.

To avoid looking like an American football player, it is enough to wear shoulder pads correctly, following a few simple stylistic rules:

1. Shoulder pads, that is, a visually expanded and enlarged shoulder line, should be the central part of the ensemble, that is, the remaining details of the cut and the image as a whole should be in a restrained style. A win-win option is a blazer or jacket with shoulder pads combined with skinny jeans, tapered trousers, shorts or a mini dress. Shoulder pads look best with tight-fitting clothes and a visually elongated silhouette.

2. If you plan to wear something with shoulder pads, it is better to minimize the presence of other accessories. This is especially true for items not with internal shoulder pads, but with decorative epaulets decorated with metal parts or glass beads; such decor is quite enough to make the overall image look bright and expressive. It is better to wear a simple, medium-sized necklace or rings with a jacket with shoulder pads.

3. Shoulder pads and long sleeves are an ideal pair; the emphasized shoulder line looks trendy in dresses, tops and jackets with long narrow sleeves. The shoulder pad should not be too voluminous; in fact, the purpose of the modern shoulder pad is not so much to increase the shoulders, but to emphasize the waist. You shouldn’t be like Lady Gaga; such exaggerated forms are only appropriate on stage, but not in everyday life. If you wear a minidress with shoulder pads, it is better to have it with long sleeves; this cut visually elongates the silhouette and emphasizes slender legs.

4. Be yourself and don't change your style. If you don't like things with shoulder pads, you shouldn't wear them, even if shoulder pads are the hottest trend. Broad, expressive shoulders, or rather things of this silhouette, require confidence and a certain perception of the image as a whole. If you're not passionate about the topic, it's best to avoid a fashion trend that conflicts with your sense of self.

Whether or not to wear things with shoulder pads is a matter of personal preference, but there is no denying that shoulder pads are back in fashion and have become one of the hottest trends. Not only horizontal shoulder pads are in fashion, but also details with a pointed top, such shoulder pads create the illusion of being taller, but again, they should not be too sharp, otherwise the silhouette will look somewhat comical. Shocking style in the style of Nicki Minaj or Lady Gaga is not appropriate in everyday style.

Shoulder pads were used back in the 80s of the last century. True, at that time the products were of a crude design and resembled a design for a hockey player. Now the size and appearance of these “pads” have changed; they are practically invisible under a coat or jacket.

Not all women understand why shoulder pads are needed, which is a pity. After all, these small products help create a more stylish look, giving the outfit clear lines, and they will also help correct the posture of their owner.

A little about the types of shoulder pads

Products may vary in shape, foam thickness and size. When choosing a particular thickness, you should rely on fashion trends, look at what silhouette is now popular. Both straight shoulders and sloping, as well as inclined lines can be in fashion. Soft “pads” on the shoulders will help make the outfit a trendy style. Shoulder width and sleeve cut also play an important role when choosing linings. Some models require raglan shoulder pads, while others require regular pads.

How to make shoulder pads with your own hands?

If you were unable to buy linings of the required size and shape in the store, you can always sew the “pads” yourself.

To work you will need:

  • scissors;
  • foam rubber, thickness not less than 1.2 cm;
  • sewing machine;
  • fabric for covering the product;
  • pencil and ruler.

The foam rubber needs to be laid out on the table and triangular shaped linings drawn on it. Their number will depend on the height of the shoulders. If they are straight, then you can make two-layer “pads”, and if they are sloping, then 3 layers are needed. The parameters of the foam triangles will be as follows: 3 by 6, 10 by 17, 5 by 10.

Now start cutting out the shoulder pad so that the middle remains solid. Apply adhesive (sold in a specialty store) to the inside of the workpieces. Now attach the larger one to the smallest piece, slightly stretching it with your hands.

Next, bend the workpiece so that the thin edges meet, secure the entire structure with a pin. Let the product dry for at least 3 hours, during which time the glue will dry and the foam will shrink and take the correct shape.

When the time is up, the lining will be ready. For beauty, it can be covered with fabric, and this can only be done on one side, the one that will be in contact with the skin. To do this, cut the fabric into the desired shape and stitch it to the foam using a machine using a zigzag seam.

If you are going to sew the product to a jacket or other item, then attach the shoulder pad so that its upper middle point is aligned with the shoulder seam. At the same time, align the thick edge along the armhole.

How to sew raglan shoulder pads with your own hands?

While almost every woman can sew a regular lining to her favorite item, raglan-shaped shoulder pads often cause difficulties. In fact, attaching such a “pad” to the right place in an outfit is not so difficult. The main thing is to try it once, and then everything will go like clockwork.

To ensure everything works out neatly and well, follow these simple instructions:

And a few more tips: if you are attaching a “pad” to clothes with traditionally shaped shoulders, then pin the shoulder pad so that its bulge is located under the shoulder seam. If the garment has an extended shoulder, secure the lining with a pin on the outside.

Sew the shoulder pad onto the seam allowance.

When choosing shoulder pads for your jacket, choose items that do not extend beyond your shoulders. The only exceptions will be ladies with full hands. If you want to create a slightly raised silhouette, then choose thicker linings without changing their width.

If you want to extend the life of foam pads, then strip them from your outfit every time before washing. To avoid the hassle of such manipulations, it is recommended to attach the “pads” to opaque clothing using buttons. Place them not on the sides of the corner, but exactly along the shoulder line, securing them to the inside seam.

Another way to secure a foam pad without using buttons or threads is to glue it. To do this, you can purchase special Velcro or adhesive tape in the store.
