DIY patchwork quilt. We sew a patchwork quilt with our own hands: diagrams and instructions

A patchwork quilt is one of the simplest projects in the patchwork style. You don't need to use it to make it. complex shapes and transitions. You can make a cute bedspread using a regular fabric rectangle, square or triangle as a basis. It will become a real highlight of the interior of a cottage or apartment, and can also be used as a picnic blanket. Even novice needlewomen can make a blanket from scraps with their own hands.

Classic patchwork quilt

Schematic images for sewing a blanket from scraps with your own hands can often be found in needlework magazines or on specialized websites.

It is preferable for beginning needlewomen to use ready-made step by step diagrams, rather than making intricate drawings yourself. For work you can use the following simple circuits:

Step 2. Horizontal rows should be sewn. To do this, the fragments need to be folded with their front surfaces on top of each other, starting from the rightmost piece, that is, each square should be placed on top of the one to the left of it. All blanks must be sewn in one line. Using the described method, it is necessary to make three more horizontal rows from the scraps.

Step 3. The resulting four horizontal rows must be sewn together, carefully aligning all the seams. To do this, place the top row with the front surface to the front side of the next one and stitch them. After this, you need to sew the third row to the second, and the fourth to the third.

Step 4. The resulting fabric must be ironed, straightening the seams in different sides.

Step 5. From the sections of padding polyester and base material, it is necessary to cut blanks for the seal and back side, corresponding to the parameters of the blanket. On a flat surface, lay out all three layers of the future bedspread as follows: the back side piece should be placed face down on the bottom, a piece of synthetic padding should be placed on it, and the top layer will be a piece sewn from shreds, laid out with the front part facing out.

Step 6. The prepared blanks must first be pinned together or swept with a light seam. After this, sew all three layers from the front side manually or on a sewing machine.

Step 7 Quilt the sewn product with a regular stitch along the seams or with another pattern at your discretion.

Step 8 The resulting blanket must be trimmed around the edges. To do this, you need to prepare a strip of fabric about 3 cm wide from the material for lining the edges. It should be attached to the edge so as to hide the stitching and sew it on.

After this, the strip must be unfolded and hand stitch carefully hem to the back of the product.

The original do-it-yourself bedspread is ready.

To ensure that the squares do not move during the process, it is recommended to pin the nearest fragments with pins and sew the product in parts.

Blanket made from denim patches

Step 2. The prepared shreds must be applied with the wrong side to the wrong side of the lining and secured with pins. Adjacent fragments should be folded in four layers so that the pieces denim turned out to be the front surfaces facing out and sew. The seam, about 1.5 cm wide, should remain on the front of the blanket.

Step 3. From denim blanks you need to sew four strips of five squares each.

Step 4. The resulting strips should be connected to each other, matching the sides of the squares. The seam should remain on the front side of the product.

Step 5. Using wire cutters, you need to make notches along the seam, not reaching the line, and along the edges of the bedspread to create a lush fringe.

A DIY blanket made from denim scraps is ready.

For ease of cutting out square blanks, it is recommended to use a template.

Proper preparation of the denim material will help facilitate the process of making a bedspread from scraps.

Before sewing and cutting out squares, the fabric should be washed and steamed.

Do not use too hot water to wash jeans. And after steaming, the trousers must be ripped open, all seams, pockets and other dense elements removed.

DIY voluminous patchwork quilt

Step 2. Using pins, you need to combine all the corners of the large and small blanks.

The resulting folds should be secured with pins.

Step 3. A stitch should be placed along the perimeter of the workpieces, retreating 0.5 cm from the edge.

The actions described in paragraphs 2 and 3 must be done with the remaining fabric squares.

Step 4. From the received parts you need to sew 7 horizontal stripes consisting of 7 squares. To do this, the adjacent ones must be folded with their front surfaces inward and stitched.

Step 5. Horizontal stripes should be sewn together, folding them right sides inward and making sure the sides of the squares match.

Step 6. Each square must be cut with inside, fill with filler and then sew up.

Step 7 For the wrong side of the blanket, you need to cut out a piece of velor that matches the size of the sewn front part.

Step 8 A decorative frill should be sewn along the edge of the velor blank. To do this, it needs to be applied to the front surface of the velor and stitched.

Step 10 The finished blanket must be turned inside out, and the hole left for turning inside must be sewn up.

A voluminous blanket made from shreds with your own hands is ready.

It can also be made from a certain number of small pillows. To do this, they must first be sewn from fabric squares and stuffed with filler, and then sewn in order onto the base according to a pre-designed pattern.

A do-it-yourself patchwork blanket can create a unique atmosphere of home warmth and comfort. It can decorate your home or become a wonderful gift for family and friends.

Even a beginner can sew a patchwork blanket from squares. A patchwork blanket is a beautiful, colorful and artistically competent home textile. It is not sewn so quickly, and for beginners it may take much more time, but such sewing can be the first truly high-quality thing in the house that you have made with your own hands.

DIY patchwork bedspread

Review more than one master class to decide not only what your product will look like (you can also see this in the photo gallery), but whether you, as a beginner, can handle all this technology. Detailed master class, of course, simplifies the work, but do not take on a difficult task right away. The first sewing should be a pleasure, but wading through the jungle of unfamiliar techniques can discourage you from further trying your hand at patchwork.

Any high-quality handicraft not only decorates the room, but also brings an atmosphere of comfort, warmth and natural brightness to the interior

Where does tailoring begin? Follow the instructions:

  • Determine the size of the bedspread;
  • Choose a color scheme that will match the interior style of the room where the product is intended;
  • Prepare the fabric: strips, pieces, shreds, squares;
  • Prepare the fabric that will become the wrong side of the product;
  • Tools you will need: scissors, needles/pins, thread, sewing machine, pencil and square ruler (but you can also use a square template).

Let's say you are making a product out of squares. Why from squares? This will definitely be easier for a beginner to do - for beginners, cutting different shapes with their own hands and then connecting them in a pattern is a real test.

You can choose any pattern for the bedspread that you can

Of course, if there is a photo or video of a master class, view it in detail. But even if you only have diagrams in front of you, you can start sewing with them.

An important point: before you start preparing squares, the fabric should be prepared for work. Just soak it for ten minutes in hot water, and then just rinse it in clean warm water.

If we are to be completely consistent, it would be nice to show real class and starch the fabric. It’s worth doing this - it will be easier to work with the material. And, of course, iron the fabric thoroughly.

How to sew a patchwork bedspread

A small master class on how to make quick squares from fabric.

Just four steps:

  • Take two different pieces of fabric and cut two equal strips from them;
  • Fold them with the wrong side and sew them, secure the sewing by carefully smoothing the seam;
  • Now measure the width of the resulting product, and from the third piece of fabric, cut out the same strip (of the same width);
  • You need to fold it with the resulting part right side out, and make seams on both sides.

As a result, you should end up with a kind of double-sided sleeve. Place this canvas on the table and cut out squares from it using a template or a special ruler.

In order to cut the squares correctly, it is important to use a template or ruler

It’s difficult to come up with a simpler scheme than this; any beginner will repeat this master class. This will be followed by the stage of connecting the squares. From the details you can get whatever patterns you want - simple geometric, fantasy, snakes, and mosaics. For the first time, you can lay out a simple ornament to make it easier to handle and you won’t get confused about what you are going to sew.

When you have decided on the pattern, the squares can be sewn together. First comes the sewing of the longitudinal stripes, after which you must iron the seams. Then we sew the resulting strips into one fabric. And again the next stage is careful ironing. After this, you will see that the front side is finished.

Sew a patchwork bedspread: the final part

The front side is not the whole product. Next, you must sew the front part to the back with your own hands. Chintz is an excellent backing fabric. Batiste can also be made inside out.

  • Place the piece of fabric for the backing face down on the table;
  • Place padding polyester on top of the backing fabric if your bedspread has the function of a blanket (otherwise padding polyester is not needed);
  • The next layer is the front side, that same patchwork of squares;
  • Either baste it yourself, or you just need to pin the entire product together and quilt it on a sewing machine.

In order for the bedspread to have a shape, it is necessary to use a sealing material in the form of padding polyester.

How to quilt an item correctly? The easiest way to do this is along the borders of the squares, but if you envision some kind of pattern, you can quilt along the pattern. True, for beginners this is quite difficult task(a separate master class on stitching will help you in this case).

The last stage is edging. This is easy to do: take a strip of fabric approximately 8 cm wide, and the length should be slightly longer than one side of the product. The fabric needs to be folded in half, applied to the front side of the item and sewn. Fold the excess edges of the edging to the wrong side of the item, fold the edging onto the wrong side of the product and stitch from the front side. The line will go across the canvas. The other sides of the item are edged in the same way.

Having comprehended the basic basics of this skill, you can move on to more complex ornaments.

This is the simplest master class; such a product doesn’t really need diagrams. The main thing is not to overdo it with the patchwork pattern.

This blanket can be used to decorate a bed, sofa, and sometimes it is also used as a tablecloth. Well, what if you decide to make a patchwork product for a children's bed? Maybe this is where you should take your first step in patchwork?

Patchwork – English name patchwork, which was popular back in the old days with our grandmothers. Previously, the pieces were simply sewn together in a chaotic order, but gradually they began to invent beautiful schemes and, with the help of which novice needlewomen can easily understand basic sewing techniques. Today, in our review, the craftswomen from the site’s editorial team will share their experience, tell you how to select materials, and photo tutorials will help bring any idea to life: from decoration to clothing.

Using the sewing technique, you can create real beauty from scraps and scraps of different fabrics: quilts, potholders, the main thing is to choose the right fabric and draw a diagram of the future product.

Fabric selection

In patchwork, the material plays the main role; it is important to choose beautiful combinations that will. The huge variety of shades and textures makes choosing quite difficult. The following must be taken into account:

  • For the front side, you should purchase fabric intended for patchwork. It has undergone heat treatment and will not shrink or fade in the finished product;
  • For the reverse side, simple and inexpensive fabrics, such as poplin or calico, are suitable.

Sewing from patchwork should begin, first of all, with your supplies: both new fabrics and used ones, but in good condition, are suitable for patchwork. Almost any material is suitable for needlework:

  • cotton;
  • gabardine;
  • tweed.

If the product will be subject to stress, you can additionally place it on lining fabric and padding polyester.

Choosing a template, the basics of drawing up patchwork patterns and patterns

The second important step in patchwork creativity is choosing a pattern; for beginning craftswomen, it’s best to first look for ready-made templates on the Internet with detailed descriptions. To cut blanks of the same shape, you can use special layouts. We must not forget about seam allowances; cut out pieces with a margin.

Important! Dense fabric is not cut out with a margin, since excess fabric will bulge unsightly. The blanks are sewn end to end with the lining, and the pieces are stitched together with a zigzag.

Patchwork sewing techniques

There are several basic techniques for joining patchwork pieces.

Connection technique Description

Traditional

Blanks of a certain shape are sewn onto a piece of fabric. This technique is often used for blankets and potholders.

A certain pattern or design is laid out from square-shaped blanks.

Here, rectangles are taken as a basis, which can be stitched diagonally, vertically or horizontally.

For this technique, it is better for beginning craftswomen to use isosceles or equilateral figures.

The blanks are laid out on the cut in a chaotic order, organza is laid on top, then again a layer of shreds and organza. All layers must be ironed and stitched.

This is an abstract drawing without a specific shape.

A Japanese technique that imitates darning with colored pieces of fabric and stitching.

Rectangular patches are sewn onto the prepared base.

The operating procedure is as follows.

  1. Sewing begins from the middle of the pattern, gradually moving in a spiral.
  2. The scraps need to be taken in pairs, sewn together, then sewn to a common piece. The result should be a square.
  3. After you have sewn a few squares, you can begin the overall assembly. For this purpose, additional strips are used.

Model 1 – master class on patchwork sewing of the “Chaotic squares” pattern

To make a beautiful bright blanket for a child 3-12 years old measuring 110x140 cm, we will need:

  • fabric of different colors;
  • lining fabric;
  • bias binding 4.5 cm wide;
  • padding polyester

The operating procedure is as follows.

Illustration Description of action

Cut 208 squares 10x10 cm

Sew squares in pairs facing inwards different colors, distance from the edge – 0.75 cm.

Open the squares and sew another row of scraps to the right edge. Block of squares – 13×16 patches.

On the wrong side, all seams are in the same direction.

Sew all squares vertically.

Iron all seams from the inside out in the same direction.

Lay the lining fabric, padding polyester on it and a blank of squares on top. The layers must be larger than the main workpiece. Secure all seams vertically with pins.

Sew the pinned vertical seams exactly in the middle, then sew them in a perpendicular direction.

Sew the workpiece along the edge with an indentation of 0.5 cm, after which you can cut off the protruding parts of the lining and padding polyester.

Sew the bias tape from the wrong side strictly along the side seam, having previously turned the edge 1 cm. You need to stop sewing 0.5 cm before the edge.

Fold the binding into a square at the beginning of the edge and stitch. Turn the workpiece over, turn the binding in 0.5 cm and stitch along the front side.

Using this principle, you can sew a blanket of any size.

You can sew a patchwork quilt with your own hands quite well

A patchwork quilt is a blanket made from different fabrics. When you see something like this in stores, you will immediately want to buy it. But why spend money if you can sew it yourself?

Step-by-step instructions for beginners:

  1. First, you need to prepare your workplace. During the work, you will have to shred a lot of fabric, and all the shreds will not fit on a small table.
  2. As soon as the time comes to choose the material, pay attention to the fact that this fabric will be the front part of our future blanket, so we sew everything carefully.
  3. For beginners, it is best to choose fabrics such as chintz, jersey or linen. Of course, in specialized stores you can buy ready-made fabrics for sewing a patchwork quilt, but it will be much more interesting to disassemble all the closets and give life to old things.
  4. Be sure to prepare an iron and sewing machine: they are simply necessary in order to achieve the desired result.
  5. Before you start creating, think about the combination of colors: what goes with what or what exactly you want to see in your blanket. Make several sketches to make it easier to decide later.
  6. Your future blanket must include: a lining (it is best to use plain fabric), a colorful top, insulation (it can be made of padding polyester or batting), the blanket can be stuffed using both natural and synthetic means.
  7. You will need scissors, thread, needles, special chalk, measuring tape, pins.
  8. Download the template. It may be different geometric shape. Thanks to it, you will be able to evenly cut the flaps of the shape that is required.
  9. Once you have cut out the flaps, you will need to collect several pieces of fabric one by one and pierce them with pins on the wrong side. Then stitch on a sewing machine.
  10. Once you have finished making the top, you will need to iron it so that no thickening occurs.
  11. Next, you should lay out the pre-ironed lining from the wrong side onto the floor. We put filling (cotton, wool) on top of it. Please note that the lining should protrude five centimeters. Next we put the top on and secure it all with pins.
  12. Then we sew everything on a sewing machine.
  13. The last step is finishing the edges. Prepare four ribbons and sew through all layers.

Now the blanket is ready. The work, of course, requires a lot of effort, but it is very exciting. You will be pleased with the result, as this blanket will be one of a kind.

You can also choose many bright and colorful colors to make a baby blanket for your baby.

Bedspread or blanket: sewing from jeans or just old jeans

Surely everyone has old and unnecessary jeans lying around in their closet, perhaps even more than one. It’s a shame to throw them away, but you don’t know what to do, so they can be stored for years and take up quite a lot of space in your closet. It is for this reason that you can use them as a material to make an unusual bedspread. This thing will easily fit into a teenager’s room or on a regular sofa. A very interesting and original bedspread, which would also not be a shame to give as a gift.

Surely everyone has old and unnecessary jeans lying around in their closet, perhaps even more than one

In addition, you can make small cuts on the denim and somehow shred the edges into strips, this will look quite creative and interesting. Dress your furniture in timeless classics and surprise your guests with this piece.

Master class for beginners:

  1. The first thing to do is calculate the size of your future bedspread. The standard is 1.5 meters by 2.3 meters.
  2. Cut your jeans into about sixty square pieces. You can use a template so that all the squares come out the same.
  3. Next you will need to sew several squares with separate ribbons. After you finish sewing, be sure to iron them.
  4. Sew all the ribbons together, preferably from the wrong side. Sew a synthetic padding layer over the jeans. The work is certainly not easy, but what will the result be if you try.

This is where your work ends. The bedspread really looks very cool, you can put it on your bed, chair or sofa. You can use the leftovers to cover a couch or bench.

In addition to the bedspread, you can sew yourself a blanket from jeans. The principle of operation is the same as when sewing a bedspread, you will just need to additionally sew cotton filling onto the blanket so that it can warm you on cold days. Try clearing out your closet and turning old jeans into new and original plaid or a blanket that will please your eyes. Also take photos of your masterpiece and post it on social networks so that everyone can appreciate your handicraft.

Do-it-yourself patchwork quilt in patchwork or bonbon style: work diagram

A patchwork style blanket will always be relevant. It will perfectly harmonize with your interior. By giving free rein to your imagination and combining colors, you create a truly unique item. This technique is used not only for sewing patchwork quilts, but also for making clutches, clothing, and bed linen. Sewing this way will be very interesting for beginning seamstresses. Of course, few people manage to get a satisfactory result the first time, but if you improve in this, then you have the opportunity to become a truly professional in this matter. The main thing is to try and you will succeed.

Frequently made mistakes will be described below:

  • Don't try to select fabrics at random. You need to carefully select the material. Be careful and make sure that all colors are in harmony and match each other.
  • Do not combine fabrics of different thicknesses.
  • Don't be lazy and iron all the seams.
  • Never stretch the edges of the fabric.

Try to think things through in advance. What patterns will be present in your blanket, what kind of patches will it be, diamond-shaped or square. It is best to create a sketch from which you can work in the future.

The most distinctive part about this blanket is that the fabrics have 3D patterns.

Follow a certain style. Make sure that all the fabrics are as one unit. The procedure is the same as when sewing a regular blanket.

In fact, much attention is paid to the selection of colors and patterns. To begin with, you can focus on just two colors and patterns. Try to sew different elements together as carefully as possible to get a fairly even plane without wrinkles. Under no circumstances try to fit all the colors into your masterpiece, as this will look very ugly and strange. Believe me, this color combination is not very successful. To better understand whether your fabrics match or not, you should lay them out on a large table and move away. This way you will see a rough picture of your future blanket.

Sewing a bonbon style blanket is quite difficult.

Sewing a bonbon style blanket is quite difficult as it takes a lot of time. In general, it is better to take cotton fabric, and satin ribbons will make wonderful decorations for your blanket. The ottomans will have to be filled with cotton or padding polyester.

  1. It is imperative that a fabric is selected that will fit perfectly with others.
  2. So-called ottomans are easy to make with your own hands. The fabric should be cut and stitched in a row (don’t forget to press the seams!).
  3. When stitching the top, place equal pleats on the pieces. Sew your bonbons together to create pockets of sorts.
  4. Next, you should fill them with cotton and stitch the pockets.
  5. A satin ribbon is suitable for edging.

This way you will get a very voluminous and airy blanket.

Pillows made from old jeans

Pillows made from old jeans look quite stylish

Instructions for creating denim pads:

  • To begin, take a pair of jeans and cut off the legs.
  • Using the template, draw circles on the pant leg.
  • We draw a line of about ten centimeters with a marker in order to make a seam along it with another circle.
  • We put two circles on top of each other and make a line along the line. Similarly, we connect two more circles with them. Then we smooth out all the seams.
  • We take pre-prepared cotton and thin padding polyester squares and insert them into our circles in order: padding polyester squares come first, and cotton ones come next.
  • Let's do the same with the rest of the circles, and connect it all into a single canvas.
  • We cut off all the rounded edges and install a zipper at the bottom.
  • All that remains is to fill the pillow with padding polyester.

Recently, many people prefer to make bedspreads and blankets with their own hands. If you want to sew any item yourself, give preference to the patchwork technique. Blankets made in this style look very attractive and are easy to make. This product can be made from remnants of fabric of different textures.

Making a patchwork quilt is easy. To do this you will need a sewing machine, thread, needle, scissors and pins.

It is very important to choose the right fabric for your blanket. Experts advise using white cotton fabric with a printed pattern. Also, to make a blanket you will need padding polyester.

The algorithm for making a blanket is as follows:

  1. From a piece of fabric, make squares of the required size.
  2. Place the resulting squares on the surface.
  3. Sew all the squares vertically.
  4. After this, combine all the resulting parts into a single canvas.
  5. Make two strips 16 cm wide.
  6. Sew the strips to the edges of the blanket.
  7. Pin the padding polyester to the top of the blanket using needles. Remove excess fabric.
  8. Make a fabric for the lining from 2 pieces of fabric. Sew the resulting parts to the main fabric.
  9. Sew the outline of the resulting product.

Making a patchwork blanket: a master class for beginners

If you are just getting started with patchwork techniques, you can use simpler patterns. To make a blanket using a simplified pattern, you will need plain calico, a sheet of padding polyester, and scraps of different colors.

First you need to cut out at least 50 squares of fabric. Each side must be at least 21 centimeters. You can combine scraps of different colors. This will help you create a unique pattern.

The algorithm for sewing a blanket for beginners is as follows:

  • Place the squares on a surface. Form a pattern and carefully consider the composition of the product.
  • Start sewing the patches together. Sew strips of squares and then connect them together. Don't forget to smooth the canvas from time to time. This will prevent the fabric from shrinking.
  • Make a lining for the blanket. Remember to leave small allowances.
  • Fold the canvas, filling and lining. Pin the resulting product together.
  • Sew along the edges of the blanket.
  • If necessary, sew trim to the edges of the blanket.

How to sew a patchwork blanket quickly

Many masters working in the patchwork style adhere to the “quick squares” technique. This technology saves a lot of time.

When making a quilt using the quick square method, you will need several chintz patterns. Before starting work, soak the fabric in hot water and then rinse thoroughly. Then starch the chintz and run an iron over the material.

The technique for making a blanket from squares is as follows:

  1. From 2 pieces of fabric of different colors, cut 2 strips of the same size. Then place them face to face and stitch along one edge.
  2. Then cut a strip of chintz, the width of which should be the same as the previous two strips combined.
  3. Sew strip 3 to the first two. Don't forget to put them face to face. As a result, you should end up with something like a sleeve.
  4. Cut the resulting sleeve into several isosceles triangles.
  5. Place the prepared fabric for the wrong side of the blanket (for example, chintz or cambric) on the surface. Lay padding polyester and part and double triangles on top (when turned out they should have the configuration of squares).
  6. Sew the product around the entire perimeter.
  7. Make a blanket border. To do this you will need a strip of natural fabric. It needs to be stitched to the blanket, and then tucked in and stitched again.
  8. Using the same method, process all edges of the blanket.

DIY double-sided patchwork bedspread

A double-sided patchwork bedspread looks harmonious if your room is in a country style. To make a bedspread you will need threads, a sewing machine, a knife, scissors, and fabric patterns.

Before starting work, you need to make squares to create a bedspread. If the size of the finished canvas is 1.5x2.3 meters, it is advisable to use square flaps with a side of at least 23 cm. The size of the padding polyester lining for the blanket should be slightly smaller than the dimensions of the finished canvas.

The technique for sewing the bedspread is as follows:

  • First you need to prepare the fabric. To do this, wash and iron the material thoroughly. If you are using cotton fabrics, it is recommended to starch them.
  • Once you have prepared the scraps, place the two squares right sides together. Be sure to leave a 1.5 cm seam allowance.
  • Sew two squares.
  • Sew another piece of paper to the resulting piece. Repeat this procedure until you have a strip of 6 squares. You need to make at least 9 of these strips. After finishing the stitching, iron the resulting workpieces.
  • Place two adjacent strips with the right sides facing each other, and connect them with pins. Sew the strips. Repeat this procedure for all strips.
  • Place the finished front part of the bedspread with the wrong side facing up, and place the padding polyester on the canvas.
  • Sew the lining to the flaps.
  • Make a blank from a piece of fabric, the dimensions of which should be slightly larger than the size of the resulting fabric.
  • Secure the workpiece with pins and stitch it.
  • Hem the corners of the resulting product.
