There are hundreds of candles burning in churches,
And they go to kneel
There are millions of people before the saint.

Mother of God Virgin Mary,
Protect us from trouble, protect us.
You, who gave birth to a son for God,
Forgive us, your sinful children.

On the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
I want to ask for love
So that what my soul really wants comes true,
And my heart was pounding in my chest.
May the Lord save you from despondency,
And protects you from anger,
Turn to heaven in prayer,
And the Lord will not pass by words.

On the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
I wish you happiness and endless strength,
Let sorrows and sorrows fly away forever,
And neither bitterness nor trouble will knock on the house.
Hope lives in the soul, and faith will not fail,
And even in a dark heart, love always lives,
I want everything in the world to open up to heaven,
And on a holiday we visited the Orthodox Church again.

May the Mother of God with her holy power
Will fill souls and fill every home
Boundless happiness, pure light and peace,
Kindness, love, faith in God and warmth.

Happy Mother of God Day, I congratulate you,
Let them only sound kind words,
May the joy in life never leave you -
I wish you this Christmas with all my heart!

On the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
All sorrows and sorrows will go away.
May your soul be filled with happiness,
And the prayers will reach the sky.

May our heavenly Intercessor,
It will help you in your endeavors.
Life will become like a charming fairy tale,
It was as if heaven had arrived on earth.

Every year on September 21, the Orthodox Church celebrates a great holiday - the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It was erected in honor of the miraculous birth of the Virgin Mary from elderly parents - pious Anna and Joachim. The holiday was first mentioned in the 5th century.

ABOUT Mother of God there is little information in the New Testament. The story of Her life was brought to us by legend, according to which the parents of the Virgin Mary came from the family of David. The Church calls them holy Fathers of God, because in the flesh they are the ancestors of Jesus.

Miraculously, the Divine Providence for the salvation of humanity manifested itself on Anna and Joachim: after 50 years of married life, childless Anna conceived and gave birth to the Virgin Mary. Even before the girl was born, the Angel gave her the name Maria. She became the only and most holy Virgin, Who was predicted to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah: “Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a Son, and they will call His name Immanuel” (Is. 7:14).

History of the holiday

Like other Mother of God feasts, the establishment dates back to a relatively late time. The official introduction of this holiday is presumably attributed to the end of the 6th or beginning of the 7th century.

According to the author of an article in the English-language Catholic Encyclopedia (1913), the first mention of the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is the hymns of Roman the Sweet Singer, written between 536 and 556. The appearance of the holiday is most likely connected with the increased veneration of the Mother of God after the Council of Ephesus under the influence of the later apocrypha. The festival appears to have originated in the early 6th century, initially in the Greek Church, and very soon after appeared in Rome and spread to their daughter churches.

The holiday was not widespread in the West and did not have a solemn service until the 12th-13th centuries. Only at the Council of Lyon (1245) did Pope Innocent IV make the octave of the holiday mandatory for the entire Western Church, and Pope Gregory XI (1370-1378) established a vigil (vigilia) with fasting and a special liturgical service for the holiday.

How to celebrate the Nativity of the Virgin Mary

Since the 6th century, believers have rushed to churches where solemn services are held. People praise God and the day when God gave the world, in the form of the Most Pure Virgin, hope for the Savior to come into the world.

Housewives baked bread with the letters “P” and “B”, which meant “Nativity of the Virgin Mary”. They were distributed to all family members, relatives, friends, and kept under the icon of Jesus Christ until the day of His Nativity. It was believed that by eating a piece of this bread with prayer, it was possible to be cured of all kinds of ailments.

The Holy Land - Jerusalem and Nazareth - in these holidays become a center of pilgrimage. A huge stream of believers flocks to shrines associated with the earthly life of the Queen of Heaven. People especially strive to visit the source of the Virgin Mary and the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Nazareth, the Greek Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Jerusalem. According to Tradition, it was built on the site where Mary’s parents’ house previously stood.

On this day, Heaven hears all the prayers of Orthodox Christians, so it is necessary to repent of sins, thank the Creator and prayerfully ask for the fulfillment of what is asked.

Important point! On the day of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, you should not drink alcoholic beverages, meat or non-lenten foods. It's a fast day! Physical work is prohibited, quarrels and judgments are taboo. It is necessary to maintain spiritual purity, practice virtue, and help in word and deed.
