Studying the detailed descriptions of the work leads to the idea that a knitted blanket is a luxury available only to the most patient, experienced and skillful craftswomen. Trying to delve into intricate explanations with a pre-calculated number of loops and rows, you can lose all your enthusiasm.

If you want to create your own stunning masterpiece, you need to treat the work as an adventure. The experience of your own mistakes and victories is priceless. Having finished the work, you can rightfully call yourself a professional. Patience will be needed, of course. A lot of time and effort will be spent on creating a truly beautiful designer item. However, the result is worth it.

A selection of original works, presented with descriptions of interesting techniques: enterlac, tartan, intarsia, patchwork and others, will help facilitate your creative search.

Several bold and unusual ideas will surprise even experienced knitters, and will radically change the traditional idea of a knitted blanket.

Important little things

When starting work, there are a few useful tips to consider:

  1. For a thing that should delight you with its warmth for a long time and decorate the interior, you need the highest quality yarn. The cost will be considerable. But a product covered in pellets, shrunk and faded from washing will lead the needlewoman to despair and will discourage the desire to knit for a long time.
  2. It is best to use a 50% x 50% blended yarn (natural wool/mohair and acrylic/bamboo additive). A product made from such yarn is easy to care for; it can be washed and wrung out in the machine yourself. The thing will be pleasant to the touch. For a newborn, 100% soft acrylic is suitable. A blanket for summer can be knitted from cotton; it holds its shape well, does not pill, and can withstand frequent washing.
  3. The size of a knitted blanket depends on how it is planned to be used. You can wrap yourself comfortably in a chair in a cape measuring 130 x 170 cm. To cover one person or cover a small sofa, you need a blanket 150 x 200 cm. If you use the item as a bedspread, you will have to take into account an allowance of 20 cm on all sides. It turns out 180 x 220 cm for a single bed and 220 x 260 cm for a double bed. A blanket 90 x 120 cm will fit well in a baby's crib or stroller. A square blanket 110 x 110 cm can be conveniently used for swaddling. A preschooler will need a blanket 130 x 160 cm, a teenager - 150 x 200 cm. You can slightly vary the size as you wish. But in general, it is wise to adhere to the dimensions determined by experience.
  4. Yarn consumption is calculated in each case separately. It depends on the length of the thread in the skein, the density of the knitting and the chosen pattern. For a thick blanket made of wool blend yarn measuring 180 x 220 cm, you will need about three kg, for a children's blanket 90 x 120 cm - about one and a half kg.
  5. To determine the pattern, yarn consumption and other features of the future blanket, knit a sample. Usually this is a canvas 40 x 40 cm, in which all the elements of the pattern are presented. The larger it is, the smaller the error. It's always a shame to waste time on this. To make your work a joy, you can use the resulting flap as a cover for a small pillow. You will need to knit a fabric from 40 x 80 cm to 70 x 140 (depending on the amount of padding). Such a sample will give good accuracy of calculations, and the pillow will become a pleasant and practical addition to the blanket.

Classics of the genre

When starting a large-scale canvas, the first thing you should do is decide on the pattern. Simple reliefs will allow you to make a double-sided blanket, the front and back of which will be equally beautiful. The openwork item will be soft and delicate. Knitting can be done on straight long knitting needles and does not require much physical effort. A blanket knitted with a three-dimensional pattern will only fit on special long knitting needles. Working with a heavy blade will strain your arms, shoulders and require frequent breaks. However, the craftswoman will be rewarded with a delightful, lush and warm result. Circular knitting needles will help solve the problem; you can find a tool with fishing line up to 120 cm. Most of the knitting will lie on your knees and not move with the knitting needles. In any case, it is necessary to organize a comfortable and spacious place to work.

Each needlewoman has her own collection of patterns. It's better to use proven techniques. Here are some beautiful designs.

Mixes of several patterns look good on a large canvas. A pre-drawn diagram and a connected sample will help to distribute them successfully.

Be sure to think in advance how the perimeter will be processed: with a knitted openwork border, a smooth hem, tassels, or the pattern itself will create a rather interesting edge. Sometimes the knitted fabric is supplemented with a fabric lining. The blanket turns out to be very warm and resistant to deformation.

Patchwork style blanket

It is much easier to work with individual small motifs. No wonder the patchwork technique is so popular. You can knit items anytime and anywhere. It’s easy to combine details of different colors, textures and shapes like pieces of a mosaic. For a knitted patchwork blanket, you don’t need to buy a lot of yarn at once. You can collect shades as a collection, or you can recycle accumulated remains from different skeins. The colors chosen should not fade. The composition and quality of the yarn should be approximately the same so that all elements behave the same when washed. It is important to carefully connect everything at the last stage of work. The result is always impressive.

Patchwork can be knitted as one fabric, knitting motifs from one another. For example, like this knitted blanket made of squares.

It is better to draw a color alternation scheme in advance. Motifs can be made in any size. For the first square, cast on a number of stitches equal to two sides, plus one more loop. Garter stitch is used, the last stitch in the row is knitted to create knots along the edge. The scar in the middle is created by decreasing. The middle three loops in every second row are decreased as follows: two are knitted together and pulled into the third. The stitches for one side of the next square are cast on as usual, and the second side is cast on the edge of the first element. All decreases are repeated. The scars on the motifs are parallel. After each motive the thread breaks. The next row of squares is knitted based on the first. First, loops are cast on the edge of the first square, then the same number on two knitting needles. Diagonal scars are again directed in one direction. Knitting continues until it reaches the desired length. The fabric will be much softer than a regular patchwork of sewn motifs.

Master class: a blanket knitted using the enterlac technique

The ancient technique of braided knitting has become incredibly popular, acquiring several new features and a new name.

The description of knitted blankets (knitted) using the enterlac technique will differ only in the alternation of colors. A single-color product is knitted without thread breakage. In the example given, the thread is cut and fastened after each row. You can clearly see how the knitting direction changes. The blanket will turn out colorful and bright. Since the entire fabric will be worked at once, it is better to use circular knitting needles.

Cast on a number of loops that is a multiple of eight (this is the width of the square in the pattern). The total number of loops depends on the desired width of the blanket. Work begins with gray triangles. For the first element, two knit stitches are knitted and the work is turned over. At the end of each next purl row, one more loop is knitted (until there are eight).

In the same row, the next two loops from those initially cast on are knitted. The work is repeated with the next triangle. After each element, eight open loops remain on the knitting needle. At the end of the row the thread breaks. The next row of blue elements begins with the same triangle. Two stitches are knitted. The knitting turns over. Knit purl rows according to the pattern.

In the front row, the first loop is removed, one front loop is added, the next one is removed, the fourth (gray) is knitted and pulled into the blue one. All steps are repeated until there are eight blue loops. The next blue element is square. Eight loops are raised from the edge base. Knit purl rows according to the pattern. In the front rows, the last blue is knitted together with gray with a slant to the left (as in the previous element).

The row ends with a blue triangle. Eight loops are raised from the base for it. In each purl row one decreases. In pictures one through nine, yellow yarn once again shows how to knit a square element with a slant to the left. The two edges of the blanket will be smooth, and the bottom and top will have teeth. You can decorate them with yarn tassels.

Tartan technique

This is an imitation of a Scottish check using multi-colored threads pulled into a knitted fabric. This fabric is almost not deformed and looks neat on both sides (unlike regular jacquard with threads drawn on the reverse side).

For the base, a fabric is knitted from alternating colored stripes arranged according to artistic design. Garter stitch, very even. It is better to work with thick yarn so that the small hem of the pattern does not sag. Using a needle with a wide eye, contrasting threads are pulled across the colored stripes of the warp. You need to start the seams from the middle so as not to get lost in the alternation of colors. The first seam is made through one purl stitch. The next one is staggered. This technique is sometimes called a woven effect pattern.

Plaid "Zigzag"

A thick blanket is made in one piece. First, one broken strip is knitted, corresponding to the width of the blanket. Garter stitch is used to ensure that both sides of the garment are the same. Ten loops are cast on. Two rows are knitted; in the third, one loop is added at the beginning of the row and decreased at the end. The wrong side is knitted according to the pattern. The actions are repeated ten times. The strip tilts to the right. In the next ten front rows, the loop is decreased at the beginning and added at the end. It turns out to be tilted to the left. Having knitted a sufficient number of teeth, nine loops are closed in the last segment, leaving one on the knitting needle. The fabric is turned over and nine loops are cast on two knitting needles. The second stripe is connected to the first at the end of each front row. The last loop is removed before work; a loop is lifted from the edge of the first strip and pulled into the removed one. The knitting turns over. How the first page alternates between increases and decreases. New stripes are knitted until the blanket reaches the desired length.

The edges form teeth, so the product does not need finishing.

Hand knitting

A popular trend is a blanket knitted in chunky stitch. Such an unusual designer item requires special yarn and tools.

The easiest way is to order knitted tape or thick yarn on the Internet, since not every store has the opportunity to keep stocks of large balls and an assortment of colors. Quality yarn is steamed and lightly felted rather than simply twisted. For a blanket measuring 150 x 170 cm you will need at least 4-5 kg.

A blanket knitted from thick yarn will be three times heavier than a regular one. Therefore, advice to use homemade knitting needles from plastic pipes should be treated with caution. It would take the muscles of a champion weightlifter to hold up a knitting project of this magnitude for several hours. This short video shows in detail how you can create a blanket knitted in chunky stitch without any knitting needles. There is no tool more reliable than your own hands!

With yarn of the same thickness as in the video, you need to cast on 25 loops for a blanket 150 cm wide. The length of the forearm is just enough for this amount.

Blanket "Mermaid"

Here's a blanket you don't have to wrap yourself in. He will gently hug his knees and will not slide or get confused.

The main part is a cone-shaped cover knitted in a circle. The length corresponds to the person's height. At a height of about a meter at the back there is a cut, which is needed for easy putting on. The tail can be tied triangular or rectangular and gathered slightly at the base. You can create a scale effect using a variety of patterns.

Such tails are quite common, you can even buy ready-made factory-made ones. There are even more unusual knitted blankets on the Internet. Popular are sharks, crocodiles and dragons created on the basis of such a cone-shaped case, which attack with an open mouth.

Children's blankets

Knitted blankets for children can be turned into wonderful fancy dress costumes and favorite toys if you add non-traditional elements to them.

The hood, sewn to one side, can be decorated with eyes, ears, and noses of all kinds of animals and cartoon characters. You will have to choose the appropriate color for the entire product. Such a cape will become an element of a fun game and will allow you, wrapped up warmly, to doze off at a picnic, on the veranda or in the car. An unfolded blanket with a folded hood will serve as a spectacular colorful bedspread and complement the interior of a child's room.

The hug blanket is complemented by the voluminous muzzle and paws of your favorite animal, which are sewn to the middle or corner of the product. Between them you can mark the tummy with a colored section of fabric or a sewn applique. Having spread out such a blanket as a rug, the child can bask in the arms of a kind bear or bunny. Decorative elements will not interfere with using the item as a bedspread or blanket.

Children's blanket made using intarsia technique

The most traditional decoration of children's accessories is a bright pattern. On the blanket it is made using the intarsia technique so that broaches of threads do not form on the reverse side.

This is one of the types of multi-color knitting. This is a separate insert in the main canvas. To transition from one shade to another, twisting of threads is used, which holds sections of different colors together without creating seams, folds or holes. Changing the thread is possible in vertical and diagonal directions. Small details from several loops can be embroidered using a chain stitch or a regular needle on the finished fabric. The blanket will be elastic and neat on both sides. Patterns for knitted blankets with drawings will have to be selected according to the child’s wishes; characters from favorite cartoons are usually in demand.

Using this technique you can create entire paintings.

This article is intended for persons over 18 years of age

Have you already turned 18?

What do you need to know if you decide to knit a blanket?

A blanket is a wonderful thing, both from a practical and aesthetic point of view. It’s always nice to lie down on damp autumn or frosty winter evenings, wrapped in a warm blanket. Especially if he is tied with his own hands or the hands of a loved one.

As a decorative element, a well-knitted blanket also looks chic. And almost every housewife sooner or later has the idea of knitting it herself. A full size for yourself or a small one for your beloved daughter’s doll.

Let's figure out what we need to have to get this beautiful and cozy item.

We will need:

  • knitting needles, diameter depends on what product we want to knit;
  • high-quality strong threads;
  • basic knitting skills;
  • free time and patience.

Naturally, the speed of knitting depends on your skills. With a well-positioned hand, everything will go relatively quickly. But for beginners it is better not to rush and do everything thoughtfully and carefully.

Preparing for knitting:

  1. We decide on the color and dimensions of the product. If you are not going to store your work in the closet and use it exclusively as a blanket, then it is worth considering how the blanket fits with the interior of the room. It’s good when the work of your hands matches the color of the curtains, furniture and carpet. But you shouldn’t take the same color. The product should not merge with the interior and lose its individuality.
  2. We select the material.
  3. Choosing a knitting pattern and method.

You can knit either as a whole blanket or in separate pieces - the so-called motifs. The latter option is more convenient, since you don’t have to carry a huge and inconvenient wad of thread. You simply make small squares and then connect them together in the finale. There are no problems finding knitting patterns now.

On the Internet it is easy to find light or dark plaid options, described step by step and even a description of the process in the form of a video lesson.

Before work, you should definitely pay attention to how to tie the edge. This is not necessary, but a properly tied edge significantly increases the durability of the product. In addition, the binding, if done correctly and carefully, will make the craft not only warm, but also incredibly beautiful. And the skills acquired in the process will be useful if you decide to knit a hat.

How to knit a blanket with large knitting needles?

Bedspreads made from thick yarn have become a hit this summer. Perhaps this is not the most practical product in everyday life, but it is definitely an excellent fashion solution from an interior point of view.

For knitting, it is best to use tops. An alternative name is combed tape.

Advantages:

  • can be knitted either with knitting needles or simply by hand;
  • the product turns out soft, airy and quite light;
  • the rawness of the wool adds stylish charm.

There is truth and disadvantages, especially painful for beginners:

  • combed tape is not a finished yarn, so it breaks quite easily during operation;
  • untreated wool coughs up a lot, loses its shape and breaks down into fibers during knitting;
  • products made from tops cannot be washed, and cleaning them with chemicals is very problematic.

If all these factors do not suit you or you doubt your skills, then it is better to pay attention to spun wool:

  • after wet-heat treatment, maintains a constant shape of the product;
  • practically does not tear, also does not disintegrate into fibers and does not fluff;
  • Can be gently hand washed in slightly warm water.

There are only two disadvantages: slight matting during use and if the item is large in size, then it must be cleaned strictly by dry cleaning.

For knitting, in addition to the material, you will have to look for especially thick knitting needles. It is better to look in specialized stores.

How can beginners knit a blanket using square knitting needles?

For a beginning needlewoman, the method of knitting from squares is the most optimal. It has the following advantages compared to knitting a whole blanket with one fabric:

  • simplicity - knitting a small convenient square is much easier than a hefty, clumsy sheet;
  • insurance against errors - if you spoil the workpiece, you can easily and calmly unravel it or throw it away altogether and start over, but screwing up a whole canvas is quite unpleasant;
  • mobility - you can easily throw knitting into your purse and knit anywhere in your free moment: at work during a break, at a movie show;
  • flight for creativity - you can easily use any knitting patterns or different materials for each square and not be tormented by the question of how to coordinate the pattern of the square with the overall pattern of the blanket, but in a one-piece blanket you will have to adhere to strictly defined initially patterns, and not take a step to the side.

Knitting in squares is a great way to practice different styles and end up with a gorgeous knitted blanket.

What patterns are needed to knit a blanket?

Description of several simple popular schemes:

  • fringed plaids;
  • plaid with a heart;
  • plaid fragments.

To understand how to knit, it is best for beginners to watch master classes, where they will explain and show the knitting methods of each pattern step by step. It will not be difficult for more experienced needlewomen to understand the descriptions of the circuits using dry numbers.

Handmade work has always been especially valued. Each handmade product bears a uniqueness mark. Even if the master does everything according to the same scheme, each work has its own exceptional features. Therefore, knitting a baby blanket for a baby who has just been born is a great idea.

As a rule, the primary colors are traditional:

  • pink for girls;

By beautifully arranging the sectors, you can get an excellent visual assortment: here is a square of plush yarn, around there are squares of “grass”, and everything is tied with a woolen thread. How to knit a blanket with braids?

Blankets with braids have several advantages:

  • the complexity of the scheme can vary from very simple to the level of extra-class masters;
  • volume of the drawing;
  • the strength of the product as a whole.

From The simplest options for beginners can be made like this:

  1. We braid: 4 rows, weave the braid and another 4 rows and weave again.
  2. Then 6 knit stitches and the same number of purl stitches for the space between the braids.

The drawing is simple, but voluminous and looks great. If you take red (blue) and white yarn, you will immediately get Christmas motifs. For beginners, cable knitting will be somewhat difficult, since this style is not very suitable for patchwork projects. You will have to knit a whole blanket. But once you get the hang of it, you can make a mermaid tail and a 3D bunny pattern.

How to knit a large blanket with knitting needles without seams?

One of the highest levels of skill is knitting a blanket without seams. Such a blanket will have to be knitted very carefully and carefully. Any mistake will lead to large volumes of corrections.

These blankets are knitted in a single color scheme for adults. Seamless knitting is durable. This blanket is perfect for its intended purpose - to keep you warm during the cold season. Calming colors are often chosen: white, turquoise, gray.

Besides, knitted blankets and bedspreads is now in fashion, and designers also do not ignore this decorative item. Knitting by hand, of course, takes a long time, but in a straight line :).

And, if you take knitting needles number 20 or number 30, the knitting process will seem quick. You can make large knitting needles yourself. Once upon a time, girls were advised to look for spatulas in children's or gardening stores. Sharpen and polish the handles from them, and here are the knitting needles for you.

The main thing is to choose a pattern and yarn. And don’t forget about the color scheme of your interior so that the future blanket fits harmoniously or, conversely, serves as a kind of “highlight” or “bright spot” in your home.

It’s like in the first photo;“brutal” interior, it looks like a wooden stand instead of a bed, a simple lamp for decoration, some greenery and... knitted blanket, knitted poufs and pillow.

Yes, they are decorated so beautifully that the bedroom seems nice and warm. And poufs are my favorite again. So there is nothing complicated, everything depends on OUR imagination.

To the first knitted blanket you can use the harnesses from the diagram below. Just increase the number of loops as you see fit. For example, for a plait, not 3 x 3 knit stitches, but say 5 x 5 or more loops for weaving.

Take knitting needles for such a blanket around No. 10, no less. Although maybe even No. 8 will do.

It is better to knit the size of the blanket a little larger than the bed duvet cover so that it covers the bed, if you still want a knitted bedspread.

I think that for a bedspread measuring 140 cm - width and 180 cm - length you need about 2.5 kg or up to 3,000 m yarn.

A lot depends on the number of knitting needles and the yarn itself.

My advice for calculating yarn for knitting:
Start your knitting with knitted decorative pillow. It is even shown in the photo. A knitted pillow will never be superfluous to the decor and will perfectly complement your blanket or bedspread. Moreover, everyone has a pad that they have been wanting to replace for a long time.

But, if you knit it first, you will be able to more accurately calculate the amount of yarn for knitting a blanket.

  • If the yarn is packaged in 50g packs, that’s absolutely fine. If 100 grams each, then they should all go to the pad. Those. you will see the amount of yarn you use for the pillow.
  • Measure it to show the associated size in numbers.
  • Calculate the number of loops on your knitted pillow on square 10 cm x 10 cm, depending on your knitting density and knitting needle number.
  • And draw an analogy with the desired blanket or bedspread, the size of which you need.

So, you can accurately determine the amount of yarn by weight or meter.

For a complete beginner, the braiding technology is shown here:

Below is the pattern and diagram of a large braid. It is in the center of the presented pattern. Although side strands are also beautiful and can be used in one way or another in other combinations for your knitted blankets and bedspreads:

For second blanket, The photo, of course, is not very good, but the plaits and braids are visible. The lilac blanket looks like it uses iris knitting and also plaits.

Below I found similar patterns and diagrams for them to get an approximate version of the blanket.

Knitting needles are also preferably No. 8 - 10 and increase the number of loops on the braid in the same way.

For your wonderful bedroom, more than one decor is important. After all, for a comfortable rest, the main thing is the condition of our bed. If it has a good orthopedic mattress, then your back will be protected for many years. It is really possible to sleep sweetly on such mattresses.

Decorate, decorate, arrange your home and enjoy a wonderful vacation.

Do you like to decorate your home with original things? Looking for any opportunity to make something fun? We offer you the idea of making a knitted blanket with your own hands - it will add mood and bring zest to your interior, and warm you with its warmth on a cool evening.

Knitted blanket is one of the trends of recent years. And no wonder. The possibilities for using this stylish little thing are great: a blanket can be used as a bedspread and blanket (which is especially important in the off-season), it can become a temporary cover for furniture, a warm and soft rug on the floor, create a cozy and inviting atmosphere in the house, you can wrap yourself up in it while sitting next to TV with a cup of hot coffee...

There are also many options for making a knitted blanket - here you can give free rein to your imagination. Thicker or thinner, small or large, classic or “playful”, square or oval, large or fine knit, with or without complex relief patterns - the choice is unlimited.

You can knit a blanket in a variety of ways. Not only with knitting needles and crochet we are used to, but even with our hands. Surprised? Meanwhile, the latter option is becoming increasingly popular today, and it is not at all difficult to implement. But... first things first.

Knitted and crocheted blanket

You can knit and crochet a lot of things.

The hook gives more opportunities for creativity: it can be used to create a wide variety of patterns and options. With the help of a hook it is easier to move from motif to motif if we are talking about a large solid blanket (not knitted in fragments).

Knitting needles in knitting a blanket can be used both circular and regular (pair). In the latter case, the blanket will consist of several squares that are sewn together. Their pattern and color may not match - then the product comes out in a patchwork style.

The simplest knitting is garter stitch. However, you should not use only this one - the edges of the blanket will bend. It’s convenient to knit a blanket with Canadian elastic: the stitches are easy to count, and if you lose count, it’s immediately obvious. Rib knitting is elastic and wear-resistant (it is used for knitting cuffs and the bottom of sweaters, etc.). Advanced knitters will have no difficulty knitting a blanket with braids and other embossed patterns. Of course, it is worth mentioning that they will require more yarn than simple knitted blankets - but what a result! It is preferable to use a knit that will look good on both sides, because the underside of the blanket will be visible.

If you are still new to knitting and are afraid of not guessing the width of the future blanket, initially make a small test sample. Cast on twenty loops and knit several rows along with fragments of the pattern (if one is planned), then measure the resulting number of centimeters in width of the sample and calculate how many loops you need to cast on to get a blanket of the desired size.

The standard size of a blanket is 1.5 x 2 m. As a guide, this blanket is suitable for a single bed. A smaller blanket (size 1.3 x 1.7 m) will cover the chair well. On average, it will take about 1.5-2 kg of yarn to make a product (depending on the type of yarn, patterns and size of the blanket). In any case, it is better to buy yarn with a reserve, since there is always a risk of making a mistake in the calculations. And the remaining balls will always find a use!

As for the composition of the yarn, it is better to focus on “breathable” options - those from which your skin will not have to sweat, namely, those containing natural ingredients, for example, cotton, wool. Blankets made from yarn with wool will keep you warm in the cold winter. Cotton models are light, soft, do not irritate the skin, and are perfectly breathable - an ideal summer option. By the way, cotton yarn is perfect for crocheting. For beginner knitters, mohair can be a real salvation: the fluffy thread helps hide traces of unevenness and mistakes in knitting. You can choose a mixture of angora and acrylic. If you want to give your interior a special twist, choose the option from ““. Such blankets are not only very original, but also soft and pleasant to the touch.

Plaid with hands

You usually knit (or “weave”) a blanket using super thick yarn by hand. However, you can do without knitting needles and a hook when creating a blanket with your own hands from ordinary yarn - then the product turns out to be openwork, very openwork!

Blankets made from extraordinarily thick natural wool yarn , mainly merino, are winning more and more hearts of needlewomen (and not only) with their interesting, catchy appearance. When you see such a blanket for the first time, you might think that this is a designer item that cannot be made independently. In fact, knitting a blanket from thick yarn is not difficult. You can use special giant knitting needles, or you can weave it by hand. Most often, a thick blanket is knitted in a simple stitch, without patterns. The hand knitting technique is no different from the usual one: the basic loops are first thrown over one hand, then transferred to the other, which serves as an incoming knitting needle.

You can learn how to knit a blanket by hand from the video.

When you use your hands instead of knitting needles, knitting turns into a kind of game: you must admit, it’s fun to cast on stitches on your hands! Well, if you involve a child in an unusual activity, the blanket will turn out doubly “warmer”.

On average, it takes about 3 kg of yarn to create a thick yarn blanket. For a product about a meter wide, cast on 15 loops (a hand is enough for them). In terms of time, if it takes about 5 days to knit a blanket from regular yarn, then it takes only 1.5 hours to weave a blanket from thick yarn by hand. And this is only for beginners! Advanced needlewomen spend less than an hour on the process.

Children's blanket

To create a baby blanket with your own hands, you should be especially careful when choosing yarn. First of all, it must be hypoallergenic. This means that if you do not know for sure whether your baby is allergic to wool, then it is better to avoid this component in the yarn. In addition, the wool is itchy - also not the best option for a child, especially a very small one. For a lightweight blanket, it is better to choose cotton yarn. You should avoid yarn that is too fluffy, as particles of lint and fluff may end up on the child’s body and face.

For the second year in a row, large knitted blankets fill the country’s Instagrams, and the trend for knitting in the interior has not let me go for this fall.

At the beginning of September, I found the Cozy Store website, which sells knitting yarn. This was what we needed! The store is in Moscow, but the parcel arrived in St. Petersburg in 3 days.

How much yarn do you need for a blanket?

Ooooh, that was the hardest question. I tormented the search engine with this question and for a long time could not find a normal answer. Everything was terribly confusing. Somewhere yarn was measured by weight, somewhere in meters, somewhere in balls. Mom dear!

I didn’t understand anything, I was terribly afraid that I would buy yarn, which would only be enough for a blanket for photo shoots - it turns out that on beautiful layouts on Instagram they often use not a full-fledged blanket, but a fake piece of a small blanket, especially for photo shoots - or I would buy so much of it that instead there will be a rug and a carpet.

As a result, I finally figured it out with the “Cozy Store”.

Here are the sizes and required amount of yarn:

  • Blanket 80x120 cm – 2 kg
  • Blanket 100x150 cm – 3 kg
  • Blanket 130x170 cm – 4.5 kg
  • Blanket 150x200 cm – 6 kg

For a medium-sized blanket, 3 kilograms of yarn were needed.

All the yarn was in one ball, so I didn't have to tie it and hide the knots while knitting. This volume of yarn produced a blanket measuring 100 by 135 cm (I measured it with a ruler!).

This is exactly what was needed. It's decorative, so I place it at the foot of the bed.

How to knit a blanket

I tried to remember the last time I knitted. The mind wandered and got lost in the memories of high school.

I figured that knitting was a skill like riding a bike - you’ll remember it when needed - and started looking for instructions on hand knitting. Of what I watched, I liked the Apartment Therapy video the most. No giant knitting needles made of plastic pipes (yes, yes, there is such a thing), no jewelry knitting patterns with your fingers and, most importantly, no instructions for an hour in a boring voice.

It took me watching the video more than once, with pauses and sometimes in slow motion, but these instructions worked.

Initially, I cast on 16 loops on my hand and, yes, my hand was enough. As a result, 16 loops gave the blanket a width of about a meter.

How long to knit by time

Watch the video of how I knitted a blanket.

The finished blanket turned out very beautiful. And this despite the fact that I managed to mess up the knitting a little, forgot to slip off the first loop and, as a result, it was not possible to make a beautiful braid along the edge. If you are not so good at knitting, then you definitely won’t make such an annoying mistake. Well, I’ve warned you now, just in case!

Plus, it's super warm. While I was knitting, the blanket became longer and longer and began to cover my legs. So, I was hot while I was knitting.
